2 The Faces of CF What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease primarily affecting the lungs and digestive system of an estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). CF causes the body to produce an unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. The pancreas also becomes obstructed, prohibiting natural enzymes from breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Since then, tremendous progress has been made leading to improvements in length and quality of life for those with CF. Who is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation? The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care. The Foundation accomplishes its aggressive research and care goals by maintaining unparalleled efficiency. Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function. To further help reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation s attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to an indoor Foundationsponsored event at a specific time.
