1 Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost Volume 58, No th April 2017 Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square. Rotary Serving Humanity bendigosouthrotary.org.au President s Report Last Thursday night we conducted a very successful fund raising dinner for The Central Mallee Lifeline at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club. Our guest speaker was Peter Symons a former exchange student to South Africa in Peter provided us with a very comprehensive summary of his recently written book entitled-brain Fuel Depletion-Making sense of Anxiety and Depression. From his own personal experiences Peter was able to offer some enlightening views about the mysteries of mental illness. He was well supported by Allyson Fonseca from WIN TV who took the role of MC for the night and also gave us some information about the way the media handles the delicate issue of reporting suicides and other issues relating to mental depression. Ninety people attended with the audience comprising local Rotarians, members of Lifeline and a number of friends and relatives of Peter Symons. Funds raised on the night are estimated to be about $1500. Recently we were offered the opportunity to park cars for a concert held at the Bendigo Racecourse. Seven members worked solidly for about 4 hours during the day parking more than 1000 cars. Later 4 other members ventured out that night to help move the same cars and buses out the gate. Thanks to those members who helped out and ensured we raised another $1500 from this exercise. Also I would like to say a special thank you to Greg Galloway from the Rotary Club of Bendigo who arranged this work for our club and also gave me some great tips on how to manage this activity. We now move into the month of May and it is The Rotary Youth Month with our focus centered round some of our Youth Activities. This week we have our Annual gathering of our Secondary College scholarship winners from This is always a very rewarding night where we hear from each of these young people. As our room at the Foundry will have extras this week we will need to get our numbers together as early as possible. If you are not attending this week s meeting please let Zoe know as early as you can. No apology Zoe will assume you are coming along. If bringing a guest let her know this ASAP. District Assembly is Sunday May 21 and we encourage all members to consider coming along. We have been offered a bus ride by the Rotary Club of Rochester so get in early and book your seat

2 with Bernie. We will not have a regular meeting on Thursday May 25 but encourage members to either attend the assembly and/or organise a visit during that fortnight to another clubs meeting. If you have never attended a meeting at another Rotary Club I would encourage all members to venture out during this period. Consider organizing into small groups and then selecting a club to visit together. A Reminder, firstly to The Horizons Committee, that we are meeting at 5pm this Thursday and to board members that our monthly meeting will follow the club meeting. As directors gave quite detailed reports to all members recently I am not expecting written reports at this board meeting. If you have any General business items get them to Bernie for the Agenda. Tony Plant- President Bendigo Bridge Club The club has received an invitation from the Bendigo Bridge Club to a 'come and try' day on Wednesday 3rd of May at 1.30pm at the Long Gully Community Centre. For those that are then interested to learn more, there will be a six week course of lessons from the following Wednesday. If you are interested, contact Kevin Gunn on Rotary Foundation Centennial Celebration Dinner This is a once in a 100 year opportunity that we would like all our members to celebrate there is much to be proud of. This spectacular event will showcase the great work of the Rotary Foundation over the last Century, and will also provide the forum to achieve the key objective of raising bequests and donations from Rotarians and Friends of Rotary. The Rotary Foundation s Centennial Celebration Dinner is to be held on 31st May 2017 at the magnificent Peninsula, Central Pier, Docklands.
