1 Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost Volume 58, No rd March 2017 Meets Thursdays 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High St, Golden Square. Rotary Serving Humanity bendigosouthrotary.org.au President s Report. Thursday March 23 found us meeting at the Foundry Complex for the first time this month. Jane Anderson the director of The Bendigo Hospital Foundation was our guest speaker. We also welcomed Jeanette Mc Cluskey and Donna both members of the hospital Orthopaedics Auxiliary. Many of us were well acquainted with both Jeanette and Donna from our times spent together selling the boat raffle tickets. Jane gave us a very comprehensive summary of the new hospital building project and also provided information on the current community fund raising initiative with a target set at 4 million dollars. Already 1.7 million has been collected towards this ambitious target. The meeting concluded, where I on behalf of all members, had the privilege to be able to hand over a cheque to The Orthopaedics Auxiliary for just over $8000 to fund the purchase of 4 units of specialized equipment for The Orthopaedics Ward. This was the club s major fund raising activity for 2016/17 and I thank all members who helped in any way to achieve this very positive outcome. It was again a great example of our Rotary Club forming a workable relationship with another group within our local community to achieve a negotiated outcome. As I reported to the members present on Thursday night, it is likely that The Combined Rotary Clubs of Bendigo will renew its catering role at the Bendigo Car Swap Meet until at least We do need to wait until the written contract is prepared and reviewed prior to signing off before we can categorically declare that we are all on board again. At this stage it does seem that a positive outcome has been achieved following recent negotiations between the relevant parties. The Peter Symons night has been booked for Thursday April 27 with the venue being The Kangaroo Flat Sports Club. Once again we have entered into a community partnership this time with Lifeline in Central Victoria. We are aiming for an audience of 150 plus so we not only need all members and partners to attend but to also make a real effort to bring some guests. Lifeline provides an invaluable service within our community. If just one person, by making that call can be prevented from the tragedy of ending their lives then every dollar we can raise has been well spent. Lifeline only receives one third of funding they require to function successfully from

2 government funding. As a community we need to raise the other two thirds. As I have stated previously Peter Symons is the son of a member in the late George Symons and was also an outgoing exchange student sponsored by our club. His life story now featured in his recent book will be one that we all need to hear. I ask you to make a big effort in assisting me to make this a very successful event. This coming week, a number of us are travelling to Shepparton for the 9800 district conference. I look forward to catching up with those members attending during the organized sessions and also on the Friday night for dinner at Bacaro s at 30 North Street starting at 7pm. I ask all members attending to send me an ASAP letting me know where you are staying with the address of the lodgings. I will be staying at the Overlander Motel on Benalla Road. Toshi will be at the Bell Tower Resort in Wyndham Street. Toshi and I are leaving early on Thursday and we plan to do a bit of fishing at The Waranga Basin before fronting up to the welcome function that same evening. Tony Plant President Tesselaar Gardens and Plants Expo Bernie Young has received some free passes to this very picturesque display of tulips up in the Dandenongs for 22 and 23 April which he will bring to the next few meetings. Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee Fundraising Dinner On Thursday April 27 th The Rotary Club of Bendigo South is hosting a fundraising night with all proceeds going to Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee. The evening is held at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club with guest speaker Peter Symonds author of Brain fuel depletion: making sense of anxiety and depression. Pie and Port Night On Saturday the 6 th of May the Rotary Club of Rochester is hosting an evening of fellowship with their Pie and Port night. The evening commences at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. If you would like to participate in the event please see the attached flyer and ensure you RSVP by Monday the 24 th of April.
