1 Sunriver Women s Club December 2017 Newsletter President s Message In my blog, Debbie Does 50! (I ll need a new name next year), I wrote about rediscovering the Christmas magic I d let slide a bit when we moved here two years ago. I realized I d let the hassle of two homes and a full schedule take away my lifelong joy in decorating our home and having it feel magical. I remedied that by making a trek to a couple of thrift stores and loading up on Christmas décor since our 20 crates of Christmas ornaments, Santas, trees, etc. are still back at our other house. As I shopped, I felt a great sense of joy at the thought of once again creating a little Christmas magic in our home. During this holiday season, regardless of what holidays you celebrate or how extensive the celebration, I hope you each find a way to feel a little magic and joy. If nothing else, take a walk in this beautiful area we live in and revel in the beauty of what s right outside your door. Another way to feel holiday joy is in giving to others. There are many ways to give this time of year and today, Giving Tuesday, is a chance to start out your holiday season with a charitable heart. 2 Sign-up now for the event or become a Romping Reindeer by making a donation. Help our neighbors have basic necessities. Funds from last year s Winter Gala contributed to programs that fed seniors and families, provided child and afterschool care, clothed school children and repaired safety issues in lowincome homes along with other needs. Fifteen programs benefited from the generosity of SRWC members. Donate at Romping Reindeer to help our South Deschutes neighbors in need of the basics of living and see the Reindeer Romp. Let s increase the SRWC s philanthropy giving for food, shelter, clothing, health, education, and child development and care in 2018! Here is the link again if you need it - Birthday Lunch The December Birthday Luncheon is being organized by Bonnie Mankoff. Watch for your invitation. Loose Cannons December 8 from 5 to 8pm: Come to Sip & Shop at the Sunriver Brewing Co, on Venture Lane, not at the restaurant in The Village. This is for a fund-raiser for Fences for Fido which is a non-profit organization that builds fences and provides insulated shelters for dogs kept on chains. There will be various vendor tables to purchase things. December 11: Join the Loose Cannons table at the Women s Club dinner dance being held at the Great Hall at 6pm. It is a chance to dress up, have a night out and support our cause. When you buy your ticket from the Women s Club and select your menu item, tell them that you want to sit at the LC table. Contact group organizer Patty Klascius with any further questions. Coats for Kids A huge thank you for all the generous donations to Coats for Kids! We have already collected over 75 items and a great deal of money. Our drive will continue through the February luncheon so watch for those special holiday sales on coats, snow pants, hats, gloves, boots and sweatpants. I will be loading up my car for the first school drop off next week. Please call me at to arrange drop-off or pick up of items or I will be collecting at the SRWC holiday functions on December 13 and 14 and at the January luncheon. 3 SRWC has made the 2018 Philanthropy Grant applications available on the SRWC website ( Successful grant recipients are nonprofit agencies or organizations that serve South Deschutes County and focus on meeting basic needs of food, shelter, health, clothing, education or child care and development for families, women, children and seniors. If any SRWC member knows of an organization that meets the criteria for the grants, please direct them to the SRWC website or Philanthropy Director, Shirley Olson at Dinner Club Hawaiian themed dinners are underway in Sunriver. Spam is probably on the menu some place. The theme for January/February is Irish. The theme for the third dinner, March/April, is Singapore Street Food. Whatever that is?? We are going to find out. For the Hawaiian dinner eight hostesses are opening their homes to share a meal with new and old friends. Over 60 people are involved. Many are missing dinners because they have already flown south or are traveling during this season. Save the date: Sunday, March, 18, 2018, 4:00 p.m. Debbie and Brian Dunham are hosting the entire Dinner Club at their home for Singapore Street Food. Carol & Don Cassetty will help. Join us Monday, January 8, when Lunch with Friends will meet in the Crescent Room at the SHARC from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Bring a brown bag lunch and beverage. If you've attended previous LWF get-togethers, come again and bring a friend. If you haven't been before or are new to the area, then do join us to meet other SRWC club members. It's free and a time for laughter and friendship. We appreciate your letting us know if you plan to attend, but it s not required. Book Club SRWC Book Club book selections are now on the SRWC website under Activities/Book Club. Currently there are five book clubs sponsored by the SRWC. Gloria Rasmussen & Susan Huseonica Art Fair Planning is underway for the 2018 Art Fair, and you are invited to join in the fun! We have immediate openings on the team for several positions, including Assistant Director, Assistant Marketing & Publicity Chair, Sponsorship Co-Chair and Assistant Communications Chair. Join the team and meet new people, make lifelong friends and make a positive contribution in the community!
