These will appear at the end of the newsletter. Ladies Day Our fall Ladies Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 7. We have a church group of 75 ladies already registered; therefore, there is a potential for a large crowd. If you are a lady interested in volunteering and feel comfortable instructing on one of our ranges, please contact me. Our ladies always appreciate instruction from another lady. Please contact Mimi Fulk if you are interested in volunteering. micky.fulk@yahoo.com or text Join us in giving back to our community and helping ladies of all ages enjoy shooting! Annual Friends of the NRA Banquet The annual Friends of the NRA banquet will be held on Thursday, September 28 beginning at 6 pm at Rock Springs Center. PCWC on Facebook PCWC has a MEMBER ONLY Facebook page. It can be found by going to Facebook and searching "PITT COUNTY WILDLIFE CLUB-MEMBERS FORUM". This is another place to stay in touch with the club, current events and events that are coming up. It was set up just for current members to share their own pictures 3 3

and experiences and the club. Check it out if you are a Facebooker. If you have questions please contact Louis Weaver ( ), Staci Rubio or Justin Smith. Club Ammo Sale The Pitt County Wildlife Club has acquired more surplus ammo through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This ammo will be sold at our club membership meetings. This ammo is Greek Military surplus. It is boxer primed, non-corrosive, and brass cased. M2 ball surplus. There are mixed dates on the cans. Cans are approximately 200 rounds each, usually a couple over. Price is $130 per can. For information and sales, contact Lenn Norment, (252) Safety First River Path Please note that the river path may only be used from sunrise until 12:30 PM on Sunday. Members are not allowed to be on the river path when the ranges are open for use. This is a major safety violation. If you have any questions, please refer to your Range SOPs. Also, please remember that vehicles are not allowed on the ranges unless they are being used for club maintenance or to set up or take down match or event related materials. Please remember, it is the responsibility of all club members to report egregious safety violations when they witness them by notifying the club President Lee Grubb, any Board Member, Chief Range Safety Officer, or Range safety Officer. Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). Range Attention Needed Recently, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of spent center fire shell casings left on the ranges. This seems to be a problem on the new ranges as well as the old ranges. Please make sure that you clean up after yourself. Leaving the spent shell casings is a safety hazard and a violation of the Club SOPs. We have also seen an increase in the number of unfired rounds left on the ranges. We all need to make sure that we leave the range in a clean and safe condition for other members to enjoy. I presume that the overwhelming majority of you do clean up after yourself and we all appreciate your efforts. If you notice people not cleaning up, please remind them in a friendly and professional way. The range we clean up is after all, our own range. People should be reminded that the shooting of cans or plastic bottles is allowed ONLY ON RANGE 6. First Aid Boxes All members should have keys to the first aid boxes on the ranges. We ask that you check your key copy to make sure that it does in fact open the padlock. Checking the padlock on one range should suffice. If your key does not work the lock, contact Rick Brixon (252) , or rbrixon@yahoo.com. Also be reminded that AED boxes are on Range 6 and inside the clubhouse. 4

Standard Operating Procedures: A Reminder 5 Please remember that eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on the ranges when firearms are in use. Contact Joe CANDIDATES' STATEMENTS Joe McMillan Candidate for President To The Pitt County Wildlife Club Membership, I would like to introduce myself as a candidate for the position of President of The Pitt County Wildlife Club. I was born and raised in Georgia and I have had a passionate interest in wildlife and the outdoors from an early age. I started my interest in the shooting sports working my way through high school as a clay target puller and range officer for the Dekalb County Shooting Range. I enjoyed recreational and competitive rifle, pistol and skeet shooting at that time. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduation and became an artilleryman. Still shooting, just bigger guns! I also shot in rifle and pistol competition for 10th Marine Regiment. Upon my discharge from the Corps, I continued to work on Trap and Skeet ranges through my college years. I became an avid waterfowl and upland bird hunter, as well as a hunting guide. It has been 33 years since I started as a guide, my 14th year as a Registered Maine Guide. My wife Amy and I have been blessed with 29 years of marriage and 3 wonderful children. Our sons, Luke and Ian graduated this year from the ECU honors college and EC Scholars program, respectively. Luke and Ian are both to be commissioned Marine officers this summer. Our daughter Anna is an accomplished archer, winning state titles and placing 2nd in the Traditional Archery Nationals. We still enjoy our days afield as a family, hunting over our pointers. I have served on the board of PCWC for 6 years in various capacities. Many know me as the head of the archery program. The archery committee and I have created a 3-D program in affiliation with The Downeast Archery Coalition at the Club. The archery program has thrived and is appreciated as one of the best competition courses in the Coalition. We have hosted the East Carolina Traditional Archery Championships over the last two years. During my last 2 years on the board of directors at PCWC I have served as your vice-president, handling facility needs with the excellent assistance of the House and Grounds committee. I have helped with many facilities issues, since in my day job I am a General Contractor. I know many of our new members, from meeting you through the new member orientation and application process. 6

7 My plans for the future of the Pitt County Wildlife Club will be to continue the great progress we have made in safety, educational events, competitive shooting, community engagement and scholarship support in the field of environmental and wildlife research. I intend to continue the Board of Directors commitment to prepare fiscally for the improvement in our facilities to prevent future flood damage. These efforts will help our club endure and be a more enjoyable experience for the membership and the citizens of Pitt County. Thank You in advance for your support. Respectfully, Joe McMillan, Vice President, Pitt County Wildlife Club Rick Brixon Candidate for President For those who do not know me, I am the current treasurer, and have been for many years. This year I am passing the duties on to someone else. I have been a member since By 1993 I was elected to the Boards of Directors, and after serving on the board for a number of years I was asked to run for treasurer. I was delighted to be able to serve the club in this capacity. Working closely with our accountant we were able to set up a very safe way to account for all monies collected for PCWC. Over all the years I have served on the BOD, I have missed very few meetings. I believe in commitment to any venture taken. I have served all offices except secretary. I was the USPSA chair for many years. I have been involved in Ladies Day from the beginning and have served as chair for 10 plus years. For quite a few years I have been the cook at Youth Days. Bill Young and I started the First Sunday New Shooters Clinic. I am also an active Hunter Safety Instructor with over 500 hours of instruction. I am a NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, and am also certified to teach many NRA disciplines. I have been a very active member over years and have the unused work day credits to show. I have headed a number of committees, such as rewriting the SOP s which took over 1 year to complete to the BOD s approval. From the President s point of view, I believe there are a number of things needed to be completed to keep our club safe and protected. One of the main problems we have is lack of communication with members about our club s policies and procedures. Orientation is too much information over too short a time. I believe a booklet, with all the information included, should be in the hands of our members so no one is left in the dark on how we conduct business. There are areas where from year to year information complied by one person doesn t get passed along for the next person to build on. In this modern age, this should be easily fixed. We have projects to repair and maintain our property that need to be completed. I am very proud of our club and the many accomplishments we have made over the years and the commitment of our members to make it the best club around. No one running, except Kim Tavasso, has more experience in the affairs of the club than I do. I would appreciate your vote at the August meeting. I want to serve PCWC and with your help I will continue. Mimi Fulk Candidate for Vice President My husband and I joined PCWC in the Spring of I have been active in participating in Ladies Day and Youth Day before becoming the director of the Fall Ladies Day. In 2013, I assumed responsibility for making membership badges, mailing new members club credentials and tracking membership. In 2014, I joined the Board of Directors as a presidential appointee. My goal for PCWC is to become better stewards of PCWC funds to position us to purchase additional land when it becomes available and to continue to look at solutions to protect the club assets from susceptibility to future flooding. I look forward to continuing conservation efforts 7

through education, community outreach and our scholarship fund. I eagerly anticipate the support of club membership and invite your input and feedback as I serve as Vice President of PCWC. 8 Mindy Waugh Candidate for Treasurer I have been married to my husband, Tyler, for 21 years and we have 3 children, Makenzy, Ethan and Oakley. I have been the secretary/treasurer for my husband's business since I have done all accounts receivables and payables for the last 20 years. I come from a background of 2 parents who were math teachers for over 40 years each. We have three accountants in my immediately family; but this is not why I would like to be the treasurer for the Pitt County Wildlife Club. Ten years ago when my daughter was 9, we were invited to attend a Ladies Day event by Fred Farrell. I took my daughter for us both to learn gun safety. I couldn't believe how safe I felt, and the excitement in my daughter's eyes led me to become a member. I knew I would be able to learn more about safety and my daughter had found a passion; the shooting sports. A few years later, my son found the love for wildlife, shooting sports and they both enjoyed volunteering at many events. They were appreciated and that kindness to a child goes a long way. Over the next few years I and my children attended a hunter skills class. I then took an instructor course and eventually the Range Safety Officer class. Although my intentions were to give back to the club and community by teaching classes with fellow members, I have fallen short because I work on Saturdays. I feel I might be able to finally give back with being treasurer because I can accomplish the tasks needed on my own schedule (of the course the club's too)! This is a service I have been providing to my husband's business for 20 years and feel I am up to the task. The club and it's members have given so much to my family. I feel it is my duty to give back in any way I can and this position seems to be the perfect fit! God bless you all. Mindy Waugh Kim Tavasso Candidate for Secretary My fellow PCWC members, please let me introduce myself. My name is Kim Tavasso and I am seeking the position as Secretary of our Club. I have served on the PCWC Board for approximately 20 years since first joining the Board in In addition to being a Board director, I have also served as club president, V.P. and secretary in the past. My interests and club activities include working as a volunteer instructor for the NC Hunter Safety program, serving as coordinator of our Spring Youth Day, working with the Spring Ladies Day, serving on the Club s Safety Committee and much more. I have also taught the NRA RSO class at the Club in years past. I am a NRA Chief RSO and have NRA Instructor Certifications in Pistol and Shotgun. Besides performing the duties as Secretary to the best of my ability, as a member of the Board I will also work to make the safety of every member and guest my first priority. Several years ago the Board conducted a survey to help identify the interests of our membership and by an overwhelming majority the members number one interest was having a safe place to shoot. Therefore, unless I hear differently from the membership, this will continue to be my focus. Please attend the August membership meeting and cast your ballot. Safe shooting and thanks! Tom Horner Candidate for Director (3 yr.) My name is Tom Horner and I have been nominated to run for a position on the PCWC Board of Directors. Although I am a relatively new member at PCWC, I have been an active member and supported most of the club activities. I enjoy working the Youth and Ladies days where we are able reach out to the community and fulfill a portion of the purpose of the PCWC. I have been active during our monthly work days and also did my best to assist in the clean-up after Hurricane Matthew. During the past year I have attended most of the Board of Directors meetings as an interested club member. I am familiar with and have participated on committees to develop 3-gun rules and also on the Match Committee. My personal interests have been in the competition 8

arena, USPSA, 3-Gun, Trap and Concealed Carry. Ever since joining the club I have been truly impressed with the wonderful, welcoming and diverse membership as well as our facility and grounds. My main interests in running for the Board position are to help assure the long term viability of the club so that future generations will be able to enjoy and benefit from it; to continue community involvement so that we continue to achieve the purposes for which the club was formed and finally to maintain the facility and grounds and make improvements that benefit the club the membership and the community. Thank-you for your time, your consideration and your vote. 9 Rick Dean Candidate for Director (3 yr.) My name is Rick Dean. My name was put into nomination from the floor at the Membership Dinner Meeting on July 20, 2017, to continue serving on the PCWC Board of Directors. It has been an honor and privilege to serve each and every one of you. I have tried to serve all of you to the best of my ability. After being a club member for some years, I was asked to serve as assistant pistol match director in December of Several months later I was asked to take over as the Match Director. In 2011 our attendance averaged 21 to 35 match participants. So far this year, our high attendance has been 95, with an average of 86. This has been accomplished with the assistance of some dedicated club members. Because of their assistance, we have been able to have benefit matches for such organizations as Rocking Horse, First Responders, Literacy Volunteers, just to name a few. This has allowed PCWC to donate hundreds to thousands of dollars to these organizations Next to membership dues, the Pistol match is the largest contributor in finances to PCWC. Some more serious and far reaching matters have faced the Board in in 2016 and into The most important has been the future existence of the Clubhouse, to repair or replace. The purchase of the property adjoining Range 8 has played the major role and been the deciding factor in many decisions facing the Board.. For both of these options, major costs had to be considered. The Brown Building and the Clubhouse are now in full use. There is one thing that does need to be completed. The old saying, you only get one chance to make a first impression is so true. We need to paint and repair the road side fencing, as well as the signage. The sign was originally a twenty to twenty five year sign when it was made and it has been up for some twenty plus years. This could be done without touching the monies for future property funding. It has been a tremendous pleasure serving all of you as a member of the Board of Directors. I sincerely hope you will allow me to continue serving you as your representative on the Board. Rick Dean Daniel Martin Candidate for Director (3 yr.) I have been a member of Pitt County Wildlife Club for 16 years. During that time I have been active in a number of different programs in the club such as the Garand shoots, USPSA pistol matches, Multigun matches and occasionally shoot Trap. Perhaps my favorite events at the club are Youth Day and Ladies Day and the annual ROTC shoots since these provide the opportunity to introduce others to the sports I love. Giving back and service to the club is an important aspect of membership. Currently, I am a NRA certified Range Safety Officer a USPSA Range Officer. I shave served as a Match director for the pistol and Multigun matches. I have been a Hunter Education instructor for more than 10 years. Along the way I have also served on the Board of Directors as a Director, Secretary, Vice President and President. I am currently running for a position as Director. During the time I have been a member of PCWC, I have seen it go through hurricanes, floods, and an incredible growth in membership. Our club, like others around the country, will face increasing pressures from the surrounding communities, and government regulation. Thus, the future of our club is one of my main concerns. I want to make sure that the club will be here for our children and future generations to enjoy. To protect the future of our club we will continue working to maintain our excellent relationship with 9

the community and also follow through on plans to expand our land holdings to protect us from encroachment by development as the population of Pitt County continues to grow. Please attend the August membership meeting, cast your vote and have an active voice in the future of the Pitt County Wildlife Club
