MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Since its early beginning as THE UNDERGROUND KYC has been a safe, friendly haven for youth to drop in after school and in the evenings. KYC has an amazing team of staff, board members and volunteers who bring diversity and enthusiasm to our Centre. Jennifer Franssen, President Cyndy Batchelor, Vice-President Graham Pincott, Treasurer Bruce Wehlau, Director Lisha Elliston, Secretary Katherine Ferguson, Director David Watt, Director Lisha Elliston, Director 2018 was a year of change our Ops Manager Pat Henderson moved on to the University of Ottawa bringing his newfound skills related to not-for-profit and volunteer management with him in June. The Board and Maura (our Program Coordinator) managed to get through the summer while on the hunt for a new Manager and in December we confirmed the hiring of Barb Tobin, a familiar face around our community bringing several years of public service, teaching, marketing and graphic arts to the Centre also saw the beginning of our Program Review with Maura completing Phase One a baseline study of youth serving organizations. We were fortunate and pleased to have a significant response to the survey. The results will aid KYC as we move forward and identify ideas and programs to fill the gaps. It is also a great opportunity to forge new partnerships to meet the needs of youth in Kemptville, Merrickville and the hamlets in between. Together the Board, staff and volunteers remain committed to being the community that helps raise local youth and we are thankful to all those who support our endeavors. Jennifer Franssen President, 2018 Our Staff say Welcome to KYC, our Program Coordinator, joined KYC full-time during the summer of She continues to provide guidance to the youth and empowers them to believe in themselves and enjoy their time at KYC by creating and supervising fun programs for all! Barb Tobin, our Operations Manager, has just joined KYC full-time during the summer of 201on a part time basis. Barb brings 30 years of high school teaching experience, 12 years as a North Grenville Councilor as well as skill and talent in graphic design & marketing. The Board are thrilled to have her on board! Meaghan Zonneveld, our Algonquin College Placement Student, joined KYC in the fall. She is working with Barb and Maura to practice her new youth & Child Worker with graduation set for spring KYC.
Some thoughts from our new Manager Barb It has been an exciting and rewarding start taking on the role of Operations Manager at KYC in January. With the support of the Board, Volunteers and Program Coordinator Maura I have been learning the ropes, setting goals and working on the Board priorities to keep KYC a safe, engaging and inviting space for our youth community. The Centre continues to receive great support from the community at large with donations and hours of volunteer time. The success of the Centre depends on everyone in the community seeing a role, large or small, in helping support the next generation. Our youth are interested and engaged in a variety of programs from sports night to cook night and also are giving back to our community by assisting in community requests for support. One project focus is to raise the dollars needed to box and ship children s books from last years Book Fair to a third world country. Our youth really look at themselves as a part of the community. The success of maintaining the high numbers using the centre can be attributed to the work of the volunteers and our Program Coordinator and input from our youth. Forging ahead a program review, upgrades to the building and youth giving back will be the focus. Positive Minds, Positive Vibes, Positive Life! A day of fun at Calypso Water Park! Did you know KYC provides an E-Waste recycling program. This service to our community also provides much needs funds to support our many program activities. In 2018 we were able to divert xxxx of material from our local landfill site. Great job North Grenville and thanks for supporting KYC and the environment!
Our Report Card on status of 2018 Strategic Board Priorities: 1. Increase youth participation (membership) by 1 youth per month. This may be through direct participation in drop in and program activities or through 3 rd party youth serving activities (ie. Scouts, Girls Inc., etc.) held at Centre 2. Review and update Strategic Plan Ongoing Review, evaluation, update, modification of existing program activities and events provided to youth at KYC. Introduce new programs or activities if feasible and expand community youth serving partnerships. 3. Programs Review and modifications Ongoing Develop understanding of youth activities in community and identify gaps 4. Financial Sustainability and ongoing Identify sources of financial sustainability.(long-term pledges, new grants, cost recovery, and/or increased fundraising or revenue generating endeavors FUNDING & SUSTAINABILITY The annual not for profit operating budget for KYC is approximately $200,000. It cannot function without ongoing funding from such organizations such as The United Way, RBC, Ross McNeil Foundation, Tim Hortons and Canadian Tire Jumpstart just to mention a few. At the same time, we rely on fundraising, either from other organizations like the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign or our 4 annual events. In 2018 we undertook; Jail n Bail KYC Golf Tournament Book Fair hosted by the Ferguson Forest Centre Celebrity Breakfast KYC also receives numerous donations from all corners of the community. KYC uses any surplus in fundraising and grants to provide both a 6 month Operations Reserve and a Capital Reserve to ensure that there are funds available for emergencies. NORTH GRENVILLE MAYOR DAVID GORDON GOES TO JAIL IN SUPPORT OF KYC Long time KYC member Riley strikes a pose as he contemplates choice while volunteering at the Book Fair
In 2018 KYC offered local youth Daily RBC After School Drop-In & Homework Help offered Every Day! There is always something Fun going on at KYC Bake Night on Monday Sports Night on Tuesday Cook Night on Thursdays Dungeons & Dragons or Movie Nights on Fridays + lots of different events, activities and field trips! Forever health conscious here are some thoughts about Sports Night from our youth. Sports Night is fun for everyone! Age 14 Sports night includes everyone in the group! Age 12 Sports night makes me forget about everything that is happening in my life and allows me to have so much fun! Age 13 Sports night is so fun! I get to hang out with my friends and make new friends as well! Age 14 I like that it s fun and involves active-ness Age 14 KYC is fortunate to have the support of the Catholic School District, Canadian Tire Jumpstart and our regular Volunteer Ryan as key element of our Sports Night by providing space, equipment and most importantly the gift of personal time! Bubble Soccer is a hit with KYC youth!
FINANCIAL OVERVIEW The Kemptville Youth Centre continues its long-time practice of ensuring that it has a trained bookkeeper, a knowledgeable treasurer and annually audited financial statements. Monthly reporting to the Board ensures that KYC does not operate in a deficit and maintains its contingency reserves. The 2018 Financial Position saw a decrease cash balances due to reducing the mortgage. All payables were current at year end. In Operations, donations did decrease slightly while fundraising had a moderate increase as the community continued to support KYC through its many events and electronic recycling. On the expense side, salaries were down as KYC was without an operations manager for half of the year. Growth in number of Youth participants meant an increase in Program costs which is our raison d être. KYC continues to manage and control its operating costs to avoid deficit. 7 Quote from youth. We can come relax enjoy at KYC. There are lots of programs or you can just relax and be with your friends. My parents do not have to sign me up to something specific I can just come here after school and enjoy my friends. Just a fun safe place to be. We would be nowhere without our Volunteers Volunteers are what make the Kemptville Youth Centre a vibrant place for youth to drop in and participate in programs, activities or just hang out with friends. The Centre is blessed to have the support of: 4 regular weekly program volunteers, 2 Emergency volunteers plus the100+ community organizations and individuals helping at our fundraising events to make them such a success including Rotary Club or Kemptville and the First Christian Reform Church
