Tracey Jumper has been working closely with many students and faculty members at Wilkes, and we would like to recognize all students with an interest in HVAC&R programs at this meeting. Students are welcome to attend our meeting for free, with the cost sponsored by the Chapter. I encourage members to reach out and invite students in HVAC&R programs to our November meeting in an effort to continue shaping the next generation of industry professionals. Additionally, the officers and your Research Promotion Chair, Ron Sibulsky, are kicking off the annual Research Promotion campaign. As a jumpstart, all board members have made an individual honor roll level contribution of at least $100 toward our chapter goal. Contributions of any amount are appreciated, so please contact Ron if you are able to make a donation to ASHRAE Research. The future of our industry depends on each of us. Finally, we will again be offering professional development certificates for attending this month s presentation, which will be held at Patte s in Wilkes-Barre. I look forward to seeing you all there! Thank you. Matt Archey Chapter Website:
2 ASHRAE ANTHRACITE CHAPTER MEETING Tuesday November 19, 2013 HVAC Noise and Vibration Control - RTU Best Practices Presented by Steffan Kollevoll Mr. Steffan Kollevoll is the Northwest Regional Sales Manager and is the co-manager of the Mid- Atlantic region for BRD Noise and Vibration Control, Inc. Steffan first began working with BRD in 2006 as a field installer in the summers while attending the University of Maryland. After graduation, Steffan became the Project Manager for BRD s installation projects. Additionally, Steffan worked as part of the Inside Sales team assisting with inquires, product support, acoustic analysis and installation estimates. He lives in Easton where he helps out as a hockey coach at Lafayette College in his spare time. The presentation on HVAC noise and vibration control will focus primarily on the best practices and strategies for dealing with acoustics on rooftop equipment. The presentation will begin with brief definitions of some common acoustic terminology and move into a discussion of the process of acoustical engineering as it relates to determining how, when, and where acoustic treatments should be considered. The bulk of presentation will focus on identifying multiple noise transmission paths specifically for curb mounted rooftop equipment with the use of case histories to illustrate problematic approaches and installations. In addition to covering these transmission paths, a good deal of the presentation will focus on strategies for successfully specifying acoustics on new design projects. The end of the presentation will quickly cover the treatment options for rooftop equipment as well as the recommended acoustic design considerations for ductwork. A Certificate of Attendance will be available at the registration table Meeting Details Location: Patte s Sports Bar & Restaurant 65 West Hollenback Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, PA (570) Schedule: 5:00-5:45 p.m. Business Meeting (All are Welcome) 5:30-6:30 p.m. Social Hour (in the bar) 6:00-6:30 p.m. Program Registration 6:30-7:15 p.m. Dinner (Buffet) 7:15-8:30 p.m. Technical Presentation Cost: $ per person FREE for Students (ASHRAE Members are encouraged to sponsor Students) If You Are Planning to Attend Please Respond by NOON on MONDAY November 18, to Walt Janus at (570) Ext. 286 or via e at wjanus@gpinet.com
3 NEWS and Notes RP Rant (by Ron Sibulsky) Our year has just begun and we are presently at 12% of our goal. We have also met our scholarship fund goal thanks to the help of Rich Karns and Alyssa Procida. I m sure with the great membership we have in the Anthracite Chapter we will have no problem meeting our overall goal again this year. The hot topic for me seems to always be our Second Annual Car Show & Autocross. My announcement last month of a new location and date has not come to fruition. The date the Toyota Pavilion had available, April 27 th, is the same day Wilkes College has their car show scheduled, and we can not conflict with their long running event. I am now in negotiations for a new location with a tentative date of May 18 th. The reason for the later date this year is Wilkes College is advertising a rain date of May 4 th for their car show and May 11 th is Mother s Day. Hopefully this new site will work out and it will lead to an even bigger and better event. Of course with a bigger event we will need more volunteers to help out. If you would like to help with set up, traffic control, registration, or judging please contact me. I can use all the help I can get since, on a personal note, I would like to run the autocross course this year. I am also looking for as many sponsors as I can get. You can sponsor a trophy for as little as $20 or be a main event sponsor for only $250. If you would like to help sponsor or would like to volunteer to help, you can call, text or me. My contact information is in the newsletter. Or stop by and talk to me at our next meeting. You can also go to the car show web site to either sponsor, donate or volunteer. Thanks for your support of the Anthracite Chapter and of Research Promotion. Society Winter Meeting and ARI Product Show in New York City The 2014 ASHRAE Winter Conference (Jan ) and the AHR Expo (Jan ) will once again be held nearby in the Big Apple. It s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the technical side of ASHRAE and kick the tires as manufacturer s showcase their wares at the Expo. For information about the ASHRAE meeting and to register visit For information about the product show and to register visit The Anthracite Chapter is considering providing a bus to transport Chapter Members to and from the AHR Expo on January 22, We are seeking sponsors to help defray the costs of transportation. If you are interested in providing sponsorship, please contact either Rich Karns at or at rkarnsr1@verizon.net or Dan Mello at or at d.mello@comcast.net. A sign-up sheet for the trip will be available at the November 19 meeting to gauge the level of interest.
