1 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 JUNE 2017 The Georgia Thrasher The Georgia ANFP recently held their Spring Meeting on Tybee Island in Georgia. The weather was gorgeous and we had a large member turn out. The three-day event covered various topics related to food service management and motivational encouragement. Wednesday 04/19/2017 Our first speaker of the day: Lavone Cook our current President talked about new the ANFP regulations that will change the way we do business as a chapter staring as soon as June first of this year. Our second speaker of the day: Raymond Scott spoke to the members about Drug and Alcohol addiction and how it relates to the work place, he focused on working with employees and offering help such as EAP services or working through your HR department to assist or remove the employee if needed. Our third speaker of the day: Robin Woodcock gave us some insight on infectious diseases and how to prevent them as much as possible. She also covered the superbugs and how NASA is involved in the research to combat them. In closing Robin stressed the importance of hand washing and the cost fighting off infectious diseases. 1

2 Thursday 04/20/2017 Our first speaker of the day: Regina St. Clair talked about her personal experiences dealing with health inspections, non-compliant workers, upper management and press ganey scores. She opened the floor for feedback, solutions and personal stories from the audience. Our second speaker of the day: Chef Sandy Ratcliff focused on being customer ready and using your production area as a stage. Showcase what you have and build on it. Keep the noise out and focus on what s important the customer!! Think about long term facilities as the ultimate dining spot and you are the star of the show. Our third speaker of the day: Kris Knost reminded us the importance of keeping up with gluten intolerance / celiac disease. The title of her presentation was Feeding Without Fear Gluten free diets in your community. Kris talked about the difference between a food allergy vs a food intolerance she defined anaphylaxis and gave us a breakdown on how many Americans will require ER treatment or die if not treated. Friday 04/21/2017 Our last speaker of the week: Denise Washington one of our favorite motivational speakers. Denise asked our members are they prepared to move forward and take a leap of faith. There is nothing stopping you, at some point in your life you will have to step out on faith and leave the negative stuff behind you. She used famous quotes from some of our greatest and most intellectual men and women of the world. 2

4 Secretary s Report for 4/21/2017 We had 71 members registered members attend our spring meeting. This is the best show of attendance we have had in quite a while. There were about 5 to 6 members that could not attend. We raffled off a 2-night Hotel Tybee and a 43-inch flat screen TV, which was both won by Vicki Dobson Congratulations to her. A Special Note From ANFP Dear Chapter Board Members: Of Georgia ANFP, Congratulations! We are excited to announce that your chapter has received the following award: Gold State Achievement Award Communication Membership Government Affairs Recognition for winners of the chapter awards will take place at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon during ACE on Tuesday, June 6 (12:00 pm 1:30 pm) at the M Resort & Casino (M Vue) in Las Vegas, NV. We are asking volunteers to let us know, who from their chapter will be attending ACE and accept the awards on behalf of the chapter. Please let us know by responding to this . 6 CE Q&A Q: Can I get CE credit for a program previously attended? A: Once CE hours have been earned for a specific program, it cannot be resubmitted for credit again, regardless of whether it is in a new certification period. Credit can only be earned once for any given program. Q: If I earn extra CE hrs in my qualifying period, can I transfer them to the next 3-year period? A: Sorry, no, you cannot. Q: How do I use a Subsequent Approval Form? A: Effective June 1, 2014 Subsequent Approval Forms are no longer necessary. The most effective way to report your CE hours is through CE self-reporting. Q: Can I report Food Shows for CE hrs? A: You can earn a maximum of 5 CE hours per 3-year CE cycle from viewing exhibits at food shows. A copy of a badge, receipt or certificate and page from a flyer or brochure showing the amount of time allocated to the food show and to each seminar attended must be filed for auditing/verification purposes. Q: Do I report an in-service program for CE hrs? A: Yes. However, if the meeting content relates to company/facility policy, procedure, production, HR issues, etc. it will not qualify for CE credit. Q: Can I earn CE for coursework? A: Yes. Each semester/credit hour is worth 18 CE credits. Q: What types of programs are considered Sanitation and Food Safety? A:Programs that address safe food handling and storage, infection control, time and temperature regulations, HACCP principles, food allergies, HIV/AIDS, ServSafe, hygiene, disaster planning and pandemic disease are eligible for sanitation CE. ANFP offers you many sanitation CE options, such as ANFP Online Course titles in Food Safety, and the ongoing Food Protection Connection articles available in Nutrition & Foodservice Edge magazine in the ANFP Marketplace. Q: What happens if I don t meet the requirements for CE and the annual maintenance fee? 6

7 A: If you do not maintain your credential through required CE and fees, you will no longer be certified. You will need to reinstate your credential. You will only be eligible to earn CE once you have completed the reinstatement process. No CE can be earned for events attended during your inactive period. Q: How do I know if my CE hours were approved? A: The Professional Development Services Department will inform you if your request for subsequent approval was denied for any reason via or mail. You can check your CE hours in ANFP Member Login, or call ANFP to check your hours, Q: How do I know if I am short CE? A: In January, the year your 3-year CE period ends, you will receive a reminder by mail if you are short CE hours and in March you will receive an reminder, if you are still short hours. However, ANFP strongly recommends that you keep track of your CE throughout your CE period by contacting ANFP or checking your CE report online. Q: How can I check my CE status online? 9 Greetings GA ANFP Members! Thanks to you. We had a GREAT turnout for our Spring State Meeting and 50 th Year Celebration in beautiful Tybee Island! The speakers, banquet and silent auction were all wonderful aspects of the meeting to make it extra special; not to mention that we had five first-timers. Please continue to fill out the evaluation forms with your ideas for hotels, vendors, speakers, and suggested meeting locations! I attended the 2017 ANFP ACE Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada this month to accept the following awards and network with other states and vendors. Regina St. Clair won the ANFP Communication Award for her work on our newsletter and website. Kelly Alexander won the ANFP Legislative Award for her work as the Spokesperson for the chapter. The GAANFP won the ANFP Gold State Achievement and Membership Award. I would like to thank all of the board members, committee chairs and members for a great year and we will continue to serve you! As we enter year, we must prepare to complete the new national guidelines and the following goals I have set for our State: Update the policies and procedures Manual / By-Laws of GA ANFP to the new national guidelines. Organize a State Chapter Community Service Event Increase Membership and Public Exposure Reactivate Districts We will need as many members as possible to attend the Fall meeting to discuss seeking nominations for executive board positions for the next year early since the ANFP timeline begins in June of each year. Please remember that this is your organization, and new leadership is always needed. Last but not least, please send in any events, meeting announcements to our Newsletter Editor, Ms. Regina St. Clair, so it can be published in the upcoming edition. 10 Dear Members: I hope this note will find everyone healthy and enjoying some of this warm weather we are having. First let me thank all the members that attended the spring meeting on Tybee Island Georgia. The spring meeting was great, the weather was fantastic and now we are looking forward to our fall meeting. Thanks to the Board for all the hard work they put into planning and helping to pull these meetings together. We really couldn t do it without them. I would like to give a special thank you to our new Newsletter editor; Regina St. Clair for publishing our News Letter. She s doing a great job. Members Georgia ANFP is our organization and we need you to get involved. Volunteer for committees and offices. Together we can make a difference. There are a lot changes that are happening now. We are finally being recognized for all the hard work we do. We will be going back to Macon in September. I reviewed the evaluation forms that I got from you all and I am looking for speakers to bring you all that learning experience that we all want. We want meetings that are informative as well as fun. If you have Ideas on something you would like to see happen at our workshops please let one of the board members know. We are here for you. We are also planning to have another food show. If you have a vendor that you would like to see participate in our meetings please send me their information and I ll reach out to them.
