2 Teens Unite - Uniting young people and rebuilding lives from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Cancer doesn t stop when the treatment stops. Founded in 2007 by Debbie Pezzani and Karen Millen OBE, Teens Unite is a small charity with a big heart, and even bigger ambition. Our work has shown us that on hearing a cancer diagnosis, young people can feel isolated and alone. They lose touch with their peers as they encounter months of hospital appointments and painful treatments. Self-confidence and self-esteem are lost as they just want to be a normal teen, relaxing with their friends and experiencing life in a similar way to other people their age. Teens Unite helps them do just this. We unite young people on a similar journey by teaching them new life-affirming skills. We help them rebuild their confidence and encourage them to see that there is life beyond their illness by facilitating regular motivational workshops and events. Our long-held ambition has been to establish England s first, purpose-built, respite home for young people aged who have battled or are battling cancer, to give them a home with a heart. We envisage a place where they can relax, take a break from everyday life, and gain strength from sharing experiences with others. It has become very apparent that we need to widen our reach by providing a short-stay residential facility to accommodate young people travelling from afar to our workshops and events. In addition we see a vital need to support young people immediately following their medical treatment. A large percentage of our teens return to inner-city living environments that are not conducive to a swift and full recovery. A residential respite home would enable them to convalesce in a supportive, caring environment. 2 Teens Unite Respite Centre, Funding Proposal

3 Why a Teens Unite Respite Centre? At present we host regular motivational workshops and events that help the young people move on through their illness. For example, our Beauty workshops help young women come to terms with hair loss and the changes the treatment makes to their skin; CV writing and interview skills workshops help those that are ready to return to education, or start work, explain gaps in their experience confidently and prepare them for interview. Activity retreats help our young people regain their physical strength and understand to what extent they are ready to face new challenges. Not only do we support young people with cancer, we provide support to their families too. Bringing families together to celebrate events like Father s Day or Mother s Day, provide happy memories. And, we don t forget their siblings either. It s easy for siblings to feel isolated and alone as the family s focus is, naturally, on the young person who is unwell. Siblings enjoy fun filled days with us that are all about them. Currently, we are limited by the costs associated with the hire of suitable venues to host our events, and with limited resources, only those young people who can comfortably make a return journey in a day, can attend. With a dedicated home, we could increase the number of events and workshops that we run, and will reduce our costs by hosting the events on site. A respite home will also allow us to expand our reach across the country by providing short-term stays for those outside of the local area. We are looking to increase our workshops to one per week, and our activity retreats (that consist of two workshops per day for five days) to six per year rather than the two that our existing budget allows. We would also like to provide a place for parents to come and relax, chat to other parents and gain strength from these relationships. Given that our motivational workshops and Teens Events are always oversubscribed, our ability to keep up with the growing demand both for an increased number of events, and the requests of short term stays at our home, could only be satisfied by the development of a purpose-built respite home. The latest statistics from Cancer Research UK show that 84% of teenagers and young adults survive cancer for at least five years. This is why the long-term support that Teens Unite provides is so important. Cancer doesn t just stop when the treatment stops. It can stay with you. Not just in a medical sense, but emotionally, socially and often physically. Teens Unite will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year, and what better way to mark this milestone than by realising our ambition, and being able to help more of the 2,555 young people who will hear the news, this year alone, that they have cancer. That s seven young people that hear it today, seven that hear it tomorrow and the day after. Building our home with a heart, would enable us to help more people, more of the time. 4 Daisy Lodge The inspiration for our project Located in County Down, Northern Ireland, Daisy Lodge is a purpose-built respite home for children with cancer and their families, operated by the Cancer Trust for Children. The success of Daisy Lodge has been so great that a second home is being commissioned. A team from Teens Unite visited Daisy Lodge in 2015 and was hugely inspired by the facilities and the unique opportunities it provides to accelerate recovery. Our ambition is for the proposed Teens Unite respite home to replicate the successful model that the Daisy Lodge centre has established and we have used this exceptional facility as a blueprint both for design and operational planning. 4 Teens Unite Respite Centre, Funding Proposal
