1 The Local Cancer Community Update of Submitted by: Tim E. Renzelmann January 5, 2016 Stories of the Local Cancer Community Let s Together in 2016! A small but dedicated group of eight cancer survivors and co-survivors assembled at the YMCA on New Year s Eve Day for a Year-End Gathering to share in some of Survive, Thrive & Be Fit accomplishments of the year gone by and plans for the year ahead while Making Sheboygan County the Healthiest Place to Survive Cancer! Following the gathering, half of us enjoyed an impromptu snowshoe hike along the Lake Michigan beach and shoreline! Bill & Terri Y. along with Kathy B. enjoy an impromptu snowshoe along the Lake Michigan Shoreline on New Year s Eve day following the SCCCF s Survive, Thrive & Be Fit! Year-end Gathering on New Year s Eve day! Active Survivors of Sheboygan Current Active Survivors of Sheboygan are encouraged to continue submitting your complete A.S.S. Logs at the end of each month. Printable 2016 log sheets are available at /get-active. Additionally, we are working on an excel version that can be submitted via (Thanks Kathy B.). Be sure to join us on Tuesday, February 23 rd for a Survive, Thrive & Be Fit Recognition Night where you can share your stories and accomplishments, be recognized for your efforts and learn about exciting opportunities in 2016! Current Active Survivors of Sheboygan Survivor Athletes will be our guests of honor, but all area survivors/co-survivors are invited to hear Dr. Mark Bettag s presentation, Climbing the Summit to Adventure! See attached. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA! In addition to all of the FREE SCCCF Survive, Thrive & Be Fit! activities that take place, area cancer survivors are strongly encouraged to participate in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program offered by the Sheboygan County YMCA. This FREE physical activity and wellness program is designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their health goals. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA instructors have undergone specialized training in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive care. LIVESTRONG was an answer to my

2 prayers, says LIVESTRONG alum and Survive, Thrive & Be Fit survivor athlete participant Kathy Burch (see photo on previous page). The program inspired and empowered me to become motivated to regain my health/energy through exercise, laughter, compassion and support. It gave me a new outlook on life. 4 Here is an early morning opportunity despite the cold, dark mornings for some safe and healthy Steps to Survivorship! Wednesday Mornings 5:30 am to 7:30 am through March 25 th Sheboygan South High School Indoor Fieldhouse Track Walk Jog Run! A couple laps A couple miles A couple hours! Note from Tim: I will plan on being there to greet you every Wednesday but I ask that you contact me in advance if you plan to attend ( or trenzelmann@physhelathnet.com). On dates with no confirmed interest, event may be cancelled. The indoor running tracks at both South High School and North High School are open to walkers and runner most mornings between 5:15AM and 7:45AM. There is no fee. These FREE sessions will include gentle stretching, breathing and meditation to bring some peace, healing and relaxation to the mind and body. No experience necessary. 8 Survivors on Snowshoes Mark Your Calendar for These Snowshoeing Opportunities! Snowshoeing on the UW-Sheboygan Campus Wednesday, January 20 th from 4P to 6PM Monday, February 1 st from 4P to 6PM We will meet near the entrance of the UW-Sheboygan Physical Education Building (restrooms available inside) before snowshoeing on the campus. Snowshoeing at Maywood Environmental Park Saturday, February 6 th from 9A to 10:20A Snowshoe the trails of the Maywood Environmental Park then enjoy an indoor presentation by David Kuckuk, Park Director, chronicling his sixmonth, 1,000-mile backpack trip of the Ice Age Trail. Family Snowshoe Hike at Camp Y-Koda Sunday, February 28 th from 1PM to 3PM Bring the whole family for a snowshoe hike around Camp Y-Koda and then relax around a fire with a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider. 9 Survivors on Snowshoes Saturday, February 6 th Maywood Environmental Park Followed by an Indoor Presentation by David Kuckuk, Park Director! 9:00AM to 10:20AM - SNOWSHOWING: Snowshoe the trails of the Maywood Environmental Park. Snowshoes.available to pre-registered participants. Contact Tim ( or trenzelmann@physhealthnet.com) to register. 10:30AM to 11:30AM 1,000 miles on the Ice Age Trail David Kuckuk and Siberian Husky companion, Yukon, backpacked the 1,000-mile Ice Age Trail to engage students in learning about Wisconsin s glacial geology, flora and fauna. Their six-week adventure provided many challenges and rewards, including Yukon s introduction to the Wisconsin Veterinarian Pet Hall of Fame. Slides, stories and equipment will be used to detail this fascinating adventure. Urban Backpacking Trip for Cancer Survivors Info Session Does 1,000 miles and six months on the Ice Age Trail sound a bit intimidating to you? Join us and learn more about a more modest two-day adventure for local cancer patients and survivors in the summer of 2016! Taylor Drive, Sheboygan (on the St. Nicholas Hospital Campus) This FREE gentle introductory class is designed for cancer patients currently in treatment, recently completing treatment, with little or no previous yoga experience or with health-related limitations.
