1 The Local Cancer Community Update of Submitted by: Tim E. Renzelmann December 2, 2016 Local Cancer Community Stories: Merge Salon & Spa Contribute Gift Cards to Local Cancer Patients! Earlier this week a package mysteriously arrived at my desk. I opened it and read the following letter: Dear Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund, On behalf of Merge Salon and Spa we are so excited to let you know we had another banner year in our fundraising efforts for SCCCF. With the generosity of our staff donating money from services to our awesome clients supporting the cause through raffles we again raised just over $1800. That brings our total to $6,500 over the last six years. (Below: Some of the many raffle baskets.) DOUBLE PRIZES from Merge Salon & Spa, CPN Hair Studio, Studio 55, Beauty Within & Tangles Salon! There was a second envelope with a letter that read: Dear Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund, Enclosed you will find $630 that was raised by five salons in Plymouth. In October we set out to make things a bit more interesting and fun in our efforts to raise money for SCCCF. I thought it could be a fun and friendly salon competition to see who could sell the most pink ribbons. After buying Joann s out of all of their pink paper I cut out several hundred pink ribbons to distribute around salons around town. We charged $1 a piece for them and turned our salons pink for the month when we hung them for all to see. It was fun to see us all come together for a great cause. NOTE: Inside the package was $1800 worth of area gift cards that will be distributed to area cancer patients and survivors. We also had another fundraiser with four other salons in the area and raised additional funds (see below). We again are so happy to donate these gift cards for you to distribute to families burdened with cancer! Thanks for all you do! Christmas Blessings Merge Salon & Spa Kim, Jamie, Laura, Tammy, Sarah & Renee. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to pick up the money and found that along with selling ribbons there was money that was donated as well!! The following salons participated: Merge Salon & Spa LLC, CPN Hair Studio, Studio 55, Beauty Within and Tangles Hair Salon. It s my hope that we can continue something like this in the future. 2 Local Cancer Community Events & Opportunities: As 2016 comes to a close I find myself planning for the 2017 but I am reminded that there are plenty of great opportunities to be enjoyed in the final weeks of 2016! I do hope you will consider joining us!!! Survive, Thrive & Be Fit: Indoor Row Team December Team Challenge! Taking Place Throughout the Month of December! We kicked off the Indoor Row Season last month with our first Team Challenge and we have a fun little challenge for you in December. Team members must first view some basic rowing material (contact Tim for details) to be eligible to participate in our Indoor Row Team activities. Survive, Thrive & Be Fit: Gentle Yoga for Cancer Survivors! Mondays through December 12 th at 10:30A Plymouth Yoga, 208 E. Mill St., Plymouth We have two more Mondays (December 5 th and December 12 th ) of this four week yoga class that is being held in the peaceful space of Plymouth Yoga! Past session have been well-attended (by many of the yoga participants who typically drive in to Sheboygan to spend time with fellow survivors) and I would encourage those in the Plymouth area as well as those outside the Plymouth area to consider the short drive out to Plymouth to experience this space for yourself! DON T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!!! TLC Survivorship Session: Local Cancer Community Annual Gathering Tuesday, December 20 th, 5P Meet & Greet, 6P Session MOA/SCBS, 1621 N. Taylor Drive, Sheboygan This has become one of my favorite sessions of the year! It is a great opportunity for anyone who might be interested in learning more about some of the events and activities (as well as the people) of the local cancer community and a great way to celebrate and reflect on the year-gone-by as we look ahead to the year-tocome! We will once again kick things off with a casual Meet & Greet & Eat with some delicious food provided by the culinary experts from Sharon S. Richardson Hospice from 5P to 6P! Feel free to bring cookies/dessert to pass! From 6 to 7:30P we will gather for some casual stories of the year-gone-by and we will look ahead to the yearto-come! If you have a particular story related to your personal cancer experience or the local cancer community (included the events and activities of the TLC Supportive Community and SCCCF s Survive, Thrive & Be Fit please let me know and we can plan accordingly! The session will also include discussion and announcements for upcoming events of the local cancer community including the TLC Supportive Newsletter, TLC Survivorship Sessions and TLC Survivorship Can Be Fun events (including a game night and the woodcarving night with the Kettle Karvers in early 2017). I will also share the results of the SCCCF Survive, Thrive & Be Fit Year-End Activity Survey (still time to submit your survey if you haven t already done so see attached) and share some changes to our 2017 Survive, Thrive & Be Fit activities based on these results. 3 Survive, Thrive & Be Fit! Indoor Row Team Challenge #2: December Bullseye Challenge! Current Indoor Row Team Survivor- Athletes are challenged to participate in our second Team Challenge of the season! Using the Game feature of the Concept2 ergometer, team members will practice consistency in tempo and power output (it s not important how fast or strong you row but the consistency in which you row at your own speed/power output). Team members must either attend one (or more) of the scheduled Team Sessions or connect with other fellow team members/row buddies to schedule a day and time and location (Sheboygan or Sheboygan Falls YMCAs) that is convenient for them.
