1 Dreamin with Gov. Dave... I confess I m a dreamer. I can usually program what I want to dream about when I go bed and I dream big! No little ole dreams for this guy. Nope, I shoot for the moon. And sometimes, I carry those dreams over to my awake time and sometimes that dream becomes my goal and I really want to do it. So, I m on my way, but wait I just remembered, a goal without a plan is just a wish. Sooo, I have to develop a workable plan, with stated outcomes and a strategy and timetable to accomplish that goal. And it will work, because I ve been fortunate to accomplish a few very big dreams by following those simple steps. Happy Optimist New Year! 2 The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Dreamin with Gov. Dave... (Continued from page 1) Our Executive Committee (which includes our Lt. Governors) have some big dreams we want to accomplish in the DMM during this Centennial Year. You ll hear more about those at the 1 st Quarter Gathering in Brookings on Oct And we have some exciting new programs for clubs to consider as well. So please, send in that registration form (it s on the DMM website) and join in the fun! But what about your club? Have you set your goals yet? Do you have that big dream you d like to make happen during this year? How about creating a Legacy Project something that will live for years to come something that your community really needs! It could be a new baseball or softball field, or new playground equipment for the school, or Optimist Legacy Scholarship at your school, or maybe its just a matter of planting a couple new trees in the city park, along with a bench and plaque? In the next few weeks, our Lt. Governors will be calling the President s and asking for a time to get together in person, or via a video or conference call and walk you through our Club Planning Guide, which is a simple form on which you can write down your goals for growth and service projects, as well as fundraising projects, and to help you select your committee chairs. We call this form your roadmap to success because when completed, and followed, it will lead your club to Honor Club status (and we have a chart to track your progress as well). If you want to get a jump on that planning, those forms are also available on the DMM website ( Please join me and your fellow DMM Optimists in making this Centennial Year your best ever in service to our kids, our communities and ourselves. Let s dream big and accomplish those dreams and then Let s Celebrate with a grand Mardi Gras Party in Grand Forks in August! 8 Tribute to Jim Meyers Past Distinguished Governor Past OI Vice President Many of us perform because we are dedicated to our purpose. Some may say why, because we care. Jim CARED. He always said to me, We must do the right things for the members and for the Optimist organization. Jim was dedicated to his family and his many friends, but he chose the Optimists to leave his legacy. He held many positions in his club and Optimist International. He made a difference at every level. His highest honor was to assist in building new clubs. He always said that new club building was the best way to build the organization. I bet he and Don Clauson are in Heaven building clubs today. Jim will be missed by everyone he touched. The DMM has lost a great Optimist. I challenge all members and officers to dedicate your service in in Jim s Memory. I have lost not only a great Optimist in my life, but a very dear friend. I know he wants us to press on to the greater achievements in our lives. Our prayers go out to Barb and Jim s family. 9 Incorporate PDP in Your Club Meetings Introduce the PDP (Professional Development Program) to your members by incorporating required elements in your club meetings. Take two to five minutes at each meeting to have one or two members talk about How Optimist Can Make a Better World or Optimism as a Way of Life. This fulfills the Continuous Improvement requirement of Level 1 of PDP. Have members learn the five purposes of an Optimist Club. One option is to spend five minutes at one club meeting to go over them. Another way is to focus on one purpose at five meetings. Learning the 5 purposes of an Optimist Club is the PDP Level 1 requirement for Organizational Knowledge & Culture. The purposes are listed below. Five Purposes of an Optimist Club to develop optimism as a philosophy of life utilizing the tenets of the Optimist Creed; to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs; to inspire respect for the law; to promote patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people; to aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world. To complete the marketing requirement of learning to write a communique/ Press Release, you can have a speaker present that topic. It s helpful to have many members who know how to write press releases. Hold a NOW (New Optimists Welcome) meeting or event and have each member bring at least one person. At the NOW meeting, have members introduce their guests. This will complete the Communication Skills element in Level 1. Four out of five of the Level 1 requirements can easily be achieved at meetings. The Project Management requirement is to participate in a community service activity. Encourage your club members to complete Level 1 in PDP. When all activities in a level are certified, please scan the brochure or fillable form and to me at ckbergstrom@hotmail.com. A club may obtain 50 PDP brochures by contacting Jackie Moore at (314) x263 or moorej@optimist.org Help your members develop their professional skills by incorporating the PDP in your club meetings. 10 Rapid City s Red Ribbon Campaign The Rushmore Noon Optimist Club in Rapid City, SD is impacting the lives of thousands of youth in their community. The club has taken on the task of being the Champion for the Red Ribbon Week Campaign. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. In 1988, National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The Rushmore Noon Club has been involved with Red Ribbon Week in the community for the past several years by sponsoring the Red Ribbon Week Spirit Award. Public and private schools can sign up to take part in the competition to have the title of the Red Ribbon Week spirit winner by showcasing their school while Optimist members would tour their schools and visit with youth and staff. The winners will receive a monetary award and a traveling RRW Spirit Award trophy. Due to funding issues, local coalitions could not support the local efforts to keep Red Ribbon Week active. The Rushmore Noon Optimist Club accepted the challenge and will now have the opportunity to impact the lives of thousands of youth in our community, by promoting a Drug Free life and good decision making through the Red Ribbon Week campaign. The kick-off event will be held on October 23 when a large Red Ribbon with thousands of youth and adult signatures that pledged to be drug free is raised up and tied around the neck of a dinosaur that sits atop the city for all to see! This will serve as a visual reminder to the community to live a Drug Free life. foundation The word FOUNDATION has several meanings, but all bring to mind strength and support something to build on, rely on. That is so true of the Optimist Foundation. The OI Foundation provides numerous support and grants so that our clubs can provide for our youth. The OI Foundation needs YOUR support to keep it strong to keep our mission strong: By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves. When we come together at our first quarter meeting on Oct in Brookings, let s show our support for each other by supporting the OI FOUNDATION! It will be a party to start the year of OI s 100 th Birthday Celebration, and what more appropriate time to have a kick-off celebration FOOTBALL season! Do you have a favorite team, be it local college/university or NFL? Show your support bring flags, banners, shirts and caps to display or wear proudly. The DMM Governor shall have a pool of members willing to serve as the Code of Conduct Mediators at each meeting and will select 2 members, one man and one woman, who are registered for the meeting or the convention to serve in this role. What is unacceptable? Behaviors, verbal or nonverbal, that are not respectful, are unwanted and/or disruptive towards others are unacceptable. This includes actions or comments that the instigator knows, or should know, will affect someone s participation or make that person feel uncomfortable or unsafe. What to do if it happens to you? If you encounter a person who, in your opinion, has violated the DMM Code of Conduct: 1. If possible, talk to the person and tell them what they said or did was not acceptable and you want them to stop. 2. Seek immediate assistance from a person who will securely walk with you to a safe place. This person and you shall seek out and report the incident immediately to the designated DMM Code of Conduct Mediators. What action will be taken? 1. The Code of Conduct Mediators will investigate the incident. 2. The Code of Conduct Mediators will immediately arrange a meeting with the accused. The accused may be asked to leave the event until the incident has been investigated. 3. When the investigation is concluded, action will be communicated to the accused and accuser. 4. This action may include, but shall not be limited to: Suggesting both parties meet with the Code of Conduct Mediators to find an acceptable solution. Have the offender make an apology, in person or in writing. Have the offender leave the event and/or be prohibited from attending future DMM events (with the approval of the Governor). 5. Any actions can be appealed to the DMM Executive Committee. After the appeal is deliberated, the Executive Committee decision shall be final. 14

15 DMM Policy Changes presented to the October 20, 2018 Special Convention Code of Conduct Mediators for this event: Recommendation: Concurrence 2. The Policy Committee is recommending the position of Governor-Candidate be added as a voting member of the Executive Committee. The Governor-Candidate is a member who has expressed their interest to serve as the DMM Governor within the next 5 years. The Governor-Candidate will be recommended by the CQ Committee and appointed by the Executive Committee prior to the annual convention and will also serve as a key committee chair during their term. ARTICLE III: DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS (page 3) DISTRICT OFFICERS AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The District officers shall be the Governor, Governor-Elect, Governor-Candidate and the Secretary-Treasurer. ELECTIONS AND TERMS OF OFFICE The Governor-Candidate shall be recommended by the CQ Committee and appointed for a term of one year by the Executive Committee prior to the annual convention. The Governor-Candidate shall be nominated for the position of Governor-Elect at the end of the one year term. DUTIES OF THE DISTRICT OFFICERS (page 4) Governor-Candidate The Governor-Candidate shall work closely with the Governor and Governor-Elect to gain knowledge and develop skills for their future role as the DMM Governor. The Governor-Candidate will also serve as a key committee chair prior to and during this term. Recommendation: Concurrence 3. The Policy Committee is recommending that funds budgeted for the current District Secretary- Treasurer to attend the Optimist International convention be re-assigned to a Governor-Candidate. The delegates at the DMM convention 2018 affirmed the necessity to create a longer succession plan and develop future leaders. Some recent Past District Secretary-Treasurers have identified that there is no formal training for them at the OI convention and agree their attendance is not necessary. We are deleting the fourth bullet as it was rarely used and the committee does not want to encourage its use. INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION (ACCOUNT ) (page 19) The District budget will include an amount toward the expense of attendance at the Optimist International convention for the Ggovernor, Ggovernor-designate Elect, Secretary-Treasurer and Secretary-Treasurer designate, and Governor- Candidate and their Very Important Persons (VIPs) excluding those expenses reimbursable by Optimist International. The following items may be reimbursed for the above-mentioned individuals: Two round-trip airplane airline tickets, coach economy class, advance booking required. Base Early Bird Registration for the officer and his or her VIP. Tickets for the President s banquet will be covered for the current Governor, District Secretary-Treasurer and their respective VIP s. Per Diem allowance of $50 per day for the convention business days only, with an additional day per diem, to be paid if delegate must stay an additional day to obtain less expensive airfare. Remaining balance of individual budgeted funds, after above expenses, may be used towards approved allowances, if within budget. Governor approval is required as recommended by status of budget from Secretary-Treasurer. To qualify for this amount, each must attend and be registered at the full convention and show evidence thereof when submitting his or her expense voucher. Recommendation: Concurrence 15
