Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement The M. Patricia Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer was organized for the purposes of providing support to ovarian cancer patients and their friends and families; increasing public awareness of ovarian cancer; and promoting research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. 1. Providing support to ovarian cancer patients and their friends and families; 2. Increasing public awareness of ovarian cancer; and 3. Promoting research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. Background Statement The Cronin Foundation is a memorial organization dedicated to a woman who was active in several worlds: womens' issues, nonprofit advocacy, legislative advocacy, law and finance. Pat Cronin was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at a time when there were only breast cancer support groups, so she founded her own group composed of friends, clients and legislators. She realized her good fortune and we often talked about the difference between the needs of the two groups of women. Many of Pat's friends knew little about ovarian cancer when she was diagnosed at age 46, and we learned along with her. After Pat's death, her friends came together to form a nonprofit organization to carry on the work we had so valued doing with her. Our mission is to help women and their families when they are diagnosed, and, as so often happens, when the cancer recurs. Over the last decade we have worked closely with Dana-Farber and have begun to balance our individual and family support with awareness and education about ovarian cancer. There is no simple screening tool or test for this cancer, which results in delayed diagnoses. There is not enough understanding of the cancer itself; although named "ovarian," some types of the cancer are now thought to grow in the fallopian tubes. So awareness of risks and symptoms is the best support we can offer until there is more progress on research. Impact Statement The foundation's accomplishments for the last year include working in coalition with the MA Department of Public Health and Dana-Farber Brigham and Women's Cancer Center on a statewide awareness campaign for the tenth year; awarding grants to support women in treatment for or recovering from ovarian cancer through support groups, alternate therapies and other activities; and raising about $3, with no paid staff. For the current year, we propose to continue funding support groups; organize a statewide conference to develop a best practices and awareness model; support research efforts (by funding a lecture that brings together researchers from around the region and nation); and increase the reach of our annual awareness campaign. 2
Needs Statement 1. Continue to work in coalition with our partners on an annual ovarian cancer awareness campaign; current budget is $15, for our Foundation; our goal is to increase our participation to a minimum of $25, for Maintain financial underwriting of ovarian cancer support groups/projects (Boston Medical Center, BIDMC, western MA, MGH, Lahey Clinic and others, if possible); at an annual cost of $3,. 3. Sponsor an ovarian cancer conference for survivors, bringing women from our support groups and their therapists/social workers together, with program support from Dana-Farber, guest speakers and a Best Practices summary and implementation plan to result; estimated cost of a roundtable to plan the event, $2,5; estimated cost of the event (free to participants) at a central location, all day, breakfast and lunch and honoraria for speakers, rough estimate of $25,, potentially considering taping a half day for use on participants websites, youtube and hospital sites (additional $1-15,). 4. Consider hiring part-time staff to implement our goals. (All work is currently done by volunteers.) 4. Additional volunteers CEO/Executive Director Statement The Cronin Foundation does not have an Executive Director; a statement from the President is included. Board Chair Statement Pat Cronin and I were very young employees of a publishing company in the mid 197s. Together, we organized a union at our firm and were involved in women's workplace organizing in the region through 9 to 5. Both of us later went on to lobby in the State House, and Pat continued also served as an assistant secretary in two Commonwealth divisions. We also went to political conventions together - enjoying both friendship and advocacy. Like many of Pat's friends, I knew little about ovarian cancer when she was diagnosed. After her surgery in 1996, I came to know many of her other friends from our own support group, known as Pat's Friends, and together we found an organization in her memory to bring to other women the love and support she received during her illness. Pat had friends in government, media and politics. We have brought their knowledge and experience to our efforts, forming a coalition of groups to spread awareness of ovarian cancer. We have created public service announcements, worked on webcasts and supported a website, ovariancancerawareness.org, to get our message out. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of gynecologic cancers. While it strikes fewer women than breast cancer, it takes many more of them. Each year, approximately 22,88 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In 212, approximately 15,55 women died in the United States from ovarian cancer. Many women don't seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if the cancer is detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93%. Until there is a successful screening method or tool, we have to depend on understanding risks and early detection to save lives. Pat was diagnosed at Stage III and lived with her disease, in and out of remission, for four years. Like many of her friends, I miss her after more than 11 years and know that if she had heard one of our awareness campaigns, she might be with us today. 5 Programs Support Group Funding Description The Cronin Foundation provides funding to support groups composed of women in treatment for and recovering from ovarian cancer. The groups typically meet monthly, have a social worker or therapist, and often undertake a group trip. Funding sometimes provides for alternate therapies in conjunction with medical treatment. The feedback we get on these groups is tremendous: the participants value the peer support, lessons learned that are shared, professional counseling, information about difficult topics (such as sexuality after diagnosis), and sometimes, just fun without feeling guilty. We would like to create more of these groups; each has a typical cost (when housed in a health care facility) of about $7, annually. We would also like to sponsor a meeting of all the groups; see the program entitled "Support Group Conference." Budget $25 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Health Care, General/Other Patient & Family Support Females, Families, Provide emotional, intellectual and practical comfort to participants. Emotional and intellectual support for women undergoing treatment or in recovery from ovarian cancer is the goal of this program. We receive annual reports outlining activities, numbers of participants, etc. The major success is providing comfort. Annual reports are provided and the Foundation often talks with therapists and nurses who work with the support groups. The number of groups under development is increasing, and they all learn about our Foundation and support. Groups are present at Boston Medical Center, BIDMC, in western MA (Cancer Connection), and we are supporting related efforts at Lahey Clinic and MGH. 5
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Campaign Description The Cronin Foundation initiated a public awareness campaign about ten years ago. Because there is no simple diagnostic test for ovarian cancer, such as a mammogram or PSA test, early diagnosis is essential to treatment and survival. We have partnered with the MA Department of Public Health; MA Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition; Dana-Farber Brigham and Women's Cancer Center; and others. The campaign always includes a website - ovariancancerawareness.org - and depending on the coalition member contributions, has featured paid or donated statewide radio and TV public service announcements (PSAs); a webcast featuring survivors and oncologists; the Turn it Teal campaign (city landmarks, including the Zakim Bridge, turn teal for the month of September and the PSAs drive listeners and viewers to the website for information on signs and symptoms); Get the Facts, Recognize the Signs, another awareness feature on the website, with electronic information and hand cards on symptoms. To date, we have donated $15, annually to this campaign; having more funds would enable us to reach more women across the Commonwealth with our awareness message. Budget 15 Category Population Served Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Health Care, General/Other Early Intervention & Prevention Females, Families, See the story above; a public service announcement we developed and helped pay for resulted in early diagnosis and successful treatment of a women whose husband heard the material. Two years ago, a man driving home from work heard one of our PSAs and thought he recognized the symptoms in his wife, a nurse. He urged her to visit her doctor, and she did have ovarian cancer, received treatment before it spread and avoided chemotherapy. There are no current public statistics on the number of women who are treated for early stage ovarian cancer, but it's our goal to increase that number as much as possible. We are not aware of public data available on women treated for early stage ovarian cancer. We continue to hear anecdotal evidence that women who are diagnosed early and receive treatment are cancer free, which is our goal. 6
Cronin Lecture on Ovarian Cancer Description The idea of a lecture on ovarian cancer was a way for the Cronin Foundation to have a small impact in the research world. We are not in the position to fund major research. Initially, we sponsored our own lectures (a therapist talking about the importance of groups; an oncologist talking about research). For the third time, we will underwrite the keynote lecture for the Dana- Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Symposium on Breast and Ovarian Cancer. This daylong event brings together practicing oncologists and researchers to discuss trends in research and treatment. Young researchers present their data while the keynote speaker (last year from Australia, whose talk turned into a longer relationship) outlines key cutting edge research. Budget 5, Category Health Care, General/Other Health Care, General/Other Population Served Females,, Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success In the short-term, the participants learn about research and potential paths to new treatments. Sponsoring the lecture helps share information, research and cutting edge thinking with other researchers and practitioners. The Women's Cancer Center at Dana-Farber outlines the program and invites our participation. Our Foundation works closely with Dr. Ursula Matulonis, Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Dana- Farber. One of the most recent keynote lecturers from Australia wound up setting up a relationship with Dana-Farber to partner on research issues. 7
Support Group Conference Description Sometime this year or next, we would like to host a statewide ovarian cancer support group conference. We would develop the agenda by hosting a roundtable meeting with representatives of each group/institution to plan the event ($25). We anticipate hosting the day-long event for 8-1 between Boston and Worcester. With sufficient funds, we could videotape the plenary session on Best Practices for distribution to groups in MA and around the country (youtube). If the conference is free to participants, we anticipate a cost of $4, (food, AV, space rental, speakers and honoraria; part-time event manager). With video and lighting, we anticipate another $13, in costs. Results would be shared with oncology departments, MA Department of Public Health and other interested groups. Budget 555 Category Health Care, General/Other Patient & Family Support Population Served Females,, Program Short Term Success Program Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Short-term metrics for a conference would be sharing anecdotal experiences and best practices during treatment and recovery. This information could be videotaped or taken down and provided to the participants, group leaders, and oncology treatment centers in MA. The aim of the conference would be to develop best practices for post-surgical, chemotherapy and remission periods for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. We would attempt to track the participants through the support groups we fund after the conference to determine if specific practices, therapies or support improve (or harm) quality of life. Bringing together group participants and therapists will allow sharing of best practices. w, this information is shared informally. Two of the groups we support have met and undertaken some activities together, but in some cases even paying for transportation is a burden for the participants. In addition to attempting to track the members of the groups, we hope this effort will develop a working group of therapists/counselors who can exchange information and support each other and the patients. Two of our groups have met or attended the same events and have expressed their appreciation for these opportunities. Data on survival show, unfortunately, that while 22,28 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, 15,5 will die of the disease. In some of the groups we support, all of the original members have died and newly diagnosed women are joining. It's important to provide support to these women undergoing chemotherapy to preserve a positive attitude and strength during this rigorous treatment. 8
Program Comments CEO Comments The Cronin Foundation has no staff and operates with donated legal services (from Mintz Levin); donated event support (Cosgrove, Eisenberg and Kiley); and the passion and energy of Pat's Friends. We are able to raise the funds we spend annually, with a small cushion remaining. We have worked in coalition with medical centers and organizations with a similar interest. We can do more with these partners if we can extend our reach on the awareness side; share more resources among support groups; and continue to advocate for more research and translational research. 9

Comments CEO Comments We are a small Foundation but we like to think we have a large impact. Our work is all accomplished by volunteers or in coalition with other organizations; we hire a consultant, for example, to develop our public service announcements and other outreach materials. t having a staff can be challenging as our board members are all employed and donating services and passions. On the other hand, we have many loyal donors who appreciate the fact that their contributions go directly into services, support, and awareness. We don't have a you tube account, but our Public Service Announcements from some years can be viewed on our coalition website at: Our latest PSA is at the foot of the home page. 11
