1 The Iris Vol 31 No 4 April 2014 Editor, Ann Akland NAMI Wake Contact Information: (919) aakland@nami-wake.org Support, Education, Advocacy NAMI Wake Board of Directors 2014 From the President s Desk NAME Gerry Akland Ann Akland Ellen Betts Clemmer Dorothy Clift Mary Ann Crandell Judith DeHavilland Crystal Farrow Tom Hadley Marc Jacques Louise Jordan Mary O Neal Paul Robitaille William Stanley Christine Taylor Anju Verma Sarah Weathersby Office President Advocacy Secretary ex officio Membership Secretary Consumer Chair Treasurer Dear NAMI Members and Supporters, This month has flown by! Our Celebration of Courage event was a huge success. Our speakers were just amazing. David Crabtree was a perfect Master of Ceremonies, adding just the right touch. And Cynthia and David Binanay demonstrated the importance of having the right ingredients to live a good life with a serious illness like schizophrenia. These included support and understanding from family, a good treatment program, and meaningful things to do. David was amazing as he played snippets of appropriate mood music on his violin during the dialogue. Thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors, board members, volunteers and our hosts at Highland United Methodist Church (HUMC) who made all of this possible. And HUMC youth joined NAMI Wake volunteers to plant 1,000 irises on the grounds of Rex Hospital. People passing by will see our bright, beautiful banners with our mental illness awareness message and our flowers. Gerry Akland At the NAMI Wake Celebration of Courage Luncheon David Crabtree, WRAL TV Anchor David & Cynthia Binanay, COC Featured Performers

A Clubhouse is a model of rehabilitation (PSR) which promotes recovery, full community integration, and improved quality of life for persons who have mental health conditions that seriously impair functioning. Club Horizon is the only clubhouse in Wake County certified by the International Center for Clubhouse Development. Clubhouse services directly address the high risks that persons with serious mental illness experience with regard to frequent hospitalizations, low levels of functioning in the community, social isolation, persistent homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, and unemployment. The program operates during regular business hours, promoting mutual acceptance, respect, and support. Persons with severe and persistent mental illness work at their own pace to gain or regain the confidence and skills necessary to lead vocationally productive and socially satisfying lives. Centering on the concept of a work-ordered day, each member chooses to participate in one of several work units to accomplish the daily functions of the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse also provides independent housing support, assistance in attaining educational goals, and help with other life needs such as food, clothing, transportation, physical wellness, and entitlement benefits, and employment. Clubhouse programs are known to prevent repeated hospitalizations for people who need coordinated, and often, elevated supports in order to function well in the community. As an example, national statistics show that re-hospitalization rates for clubhouse members is 14%, compared with 44% for those not in a clubhouse setting. Club Horizon has maintained member re-hospitalization rates of less than 10%. since 2004.
