1 News Chartered: March 20, 2015 P.O. Box 412 Lincoln, California Volume II October 2016 No. 1 Club Meetings 1st and 3rd Friday Lunch at 11:30 AM Meeting at 12:00 Noon November Meetings: 11/4 & 11/18 Prospective Members Always Welcome... Board Meetings 3rd Friday of the Month 9:30 AM November Meeting: 11/18 Turkey Creek Golf Club 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln, CA Officers President: Beth Roberts Vice President: Lou Hill President-Elec: Mary Luciano Secretary: Judy Gho Treasurer: Bec Cannistraci Directors Rae Cook John Gho John Moran Mary Taverna Edy Ternullo Karen Thompson What a great month we ve had... Message From The President Before I mention all the amazing service we provided to our community I have to say that I thought the Installation Dinner was incredible. Special thanks go to Edy Ternullo and Lou Hill for planning this wonderful event. In addition to almost all of our members attending, Division 44 was represented by Lt. Governor Laird Smith and First Lady Shari Smith, Past Lt. Governor Guy Blair and his wife Gloria, Past Lt. Governor Kathleen Ross and her husband Howard, and Division 7 Past Lt. Governor John Bummer. We had just the right amount of time to socialize before dinner, followed by a great meal and then the ceremony. Following all the official stuff, we danced the night away O.K. only till about 8:30, but that s not bad for us. I partially judge a party by how sore my feet are the next morning, and my feet were incredibly sore. In addition, October will also be remembered as the month of our first Safety Awareness Day. Words almost can t express how successful the day was. The Teachers and Principal Shamryn Coyle, were amazed at how much the kids learned and how much fun they had. Western Placer Unified School District Superintendent of Schools, Scott Leeman and City of Lincoln Mayor, The Honorable Spencer Short, joined us at the event. This almost certainly will become an annual event and I would be shocked if other schools don t request it. Special thanks go to Chairperson Christine Cirrone, and her Committee: Don Moura, John Moran, Dottie Doctor and Mary Luciano. I m looking forward to the coming fiscal year. I m certain we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children while we have fun together. Beth Roberts KCOLF News Editor Mary Luciano

9 October 2016 Page 9 Mary Luciano, K-Kids Chairperson November is a Busy Month for K-Kids and Kiwanians Who doesn t enjoy a Thanksgiving Meal? Think of those families in our Lincoln Community who cannot afford to put a Thanksgiving Meal on the table. Kiwanis of Lincoln Foothills and K-Kids to the rescue! Our club has funded $200 and our K-Kids Club will contribute $50 for Turkeys. An has been sent out to our members with a list of items that are needed. If you would like to contribute some food for the needy, Dried Mashed Potatoes, Turkey Gravy, Canned Yams/Sweet Potatoes, Stuffing Mix, Canned Corn or String Beans, Fried Onion Strings (Can/Box), Canned Mushroom Soup, Cranberry Sauce. Please note that you decide how many food items you would like to buy. Purchase your items and call Michael & Mary for Pick-Up or Deliver. All food items must be received by November 14 th to allow us time to make the baskets and get them to the Salt Mine by November 15 th. You will receive a donation form for tax purposes. All food items must be at the Luciano home by November 14 th. Kiwanis One Day Starting in the Administrative Year, Kiwanis International has changed Kiwanis One Day to be held on the fourth Saturday of October. 10 October 2016 Page 10 Christine Cirrone, Safety Awareness Day Chairperson Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School s Safety Awareness Day The Kiwanis K-Kids Club of Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School in Lincoln, a student-ran club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln Foothills, held their first Safety Awareness Day on October 6 th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon for the entire student body. Safety Awareness Day was the idea of the K-Kids for the 3 rd through 5 th grades and was overseen by members of the faculty and KCOLF volunteers. Seven Stations were set up throughout the school which provided safety tips to the students by the Lincoln Police Department (Bike, Car, and Pedestrian Safety), the Lincoln Fire Department (Fire Safety and 911 Emergency), Union Pacific Railroad (Railroad Safety), Community Emergency Response Team (What Kids Should know), the California Highway Patrol (K-9 Officers in Crime Fighting), and KCOLF and K-Kids Club (Safety Tips). Special thanks to the K-Kids for coming up with the idea. A contest will be held for each classroom to create a poster showing what they learned, which will be judged by the K-Kids Board, the winning class receiving an Ice Cream Social. The event Chairperson was Christine Cirrone, and included members of KCOLF Bec and Mary Cannistraci, Alan Roberts, John Moran, Don Moura, Bob Day, Lou Hill, Dottie Doctor, Karen Thompson, Mary and Michael Luciano, and President Beth Roberts, Norm Kent, Lincoln Fire Department; Steve Krueger, Lincoln Police Department; and Rosanne Johnson, Carlin C. Coppin Parent-Teachers Club. Several dignitaries attended, including Mayor Spencer Short, Police Chief Tim Hariggan, and Superintendent of Schools Scott Leeman. School Principal Shamryn Coyle sent a thank-you note to KCOLF, stating I really can t thank you all enough for all that you have done and continue to do for our students and school community! Snacks, Safety Day, After-School Tutoring, adopting families, library improvements, the list goes on and on and continues to grow! Yesterday s event was the biggest one yet and I know that word will travel fast around the district! I went home yesterday feeling totally exhausted and energized all at the same time. The event was a HUGE success. Students, staff, and families are still talking about it today!

12 October 2016 Page 12 Welcome New Members Congratulations to Gloria Kostenko and Sunny Simons, our first two new members for Committee Chairs please talk to our new members about joining your committee at the next meeting or by phone. We want to make sure that each new member hears about all the committees. This will make it easier for our new members to select a committee that they would be interested in. November Club Meetings November Club Meetings will be on Friday, November 4th and Friday, November 18th. Open Committee Positions Inter-Club Chairperson We need one member to be Inter-Club Chairperson or two members to be Inter-Club Co-Chairs. Easy job! You maintain a log of clubs we have already visited and set dates for those clubs to be visited. You announce at meetings the dates of future meetings and ask volunteers to visit the clubs. The Chair or Co-Chairs do not have to attend every meeting. Our club needs to spread the workload amongst our members. Please consider signing-up for this Committee Chair. Please contact Mary Luciano if you can be Inter-Club Chair or Co-Chair. K-Kids Advisors We need two K-Kids Advisor volunteers to attend K-Kids Meetings the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, from 3:30pm - 4:30pm. K-Kids Advisors work with the Kiwanis Advisors to help plan activities for the two meetings a month, attend meetings and help facilitate the meetings. The two meetings a month are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month plus one planning meeting with the Kiwanis Advisors. Each club (2) have two advisors always in the classroom. If it is a big project, we like to have three. Come join John Moran, Christine Cirrone, Rosslynne McCullough, Mary Luciano and Michael Luciano - all K-Kids Advisors. Check out the K-Kids pictures in this issue. We are having a great time with the kids. Contact Mary Luciano if your are interested.
