Box 412 Lincoln, California Volume II March 2017 No. 6 Club Meetings 1st and 3rd Friday Lunch at 11:30 AM Meeting at 12:00 Noon March Meetings: 3/3 & 3/17 Prospective Members Always Welcome... Board Meetings 3rd Friday of the Month 9:30 AM March Meeting: 3/17 Turkey Creek Golf Club 1525 Highway 193 Lincoln, CA Officers President: Beth Roberts Vice President: Lou Hill President-Elec: Mary Luciano Secretary: Judy Gho Treasurer: Bec Cannistraci Directors Rae Cook John Gho John Moran Mary Taverna Edy Ternullo Karen Thompson Message From The President Maybe one day I ll get tired of saying it was another great month for the Lincoln Foothills Kiwanis Club but not this month!!! This month we supported two great events, both wildly successful. The first was the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Network event that was held on March 8 th. We hosted the evening and over 40 Lincoln community and business leaders attended. They enjoyed gourmet appetizers, wine, and raffle prizes donated by our club. We spoke to the group about Kiwanis and were able to display a board with pictures of many of our great projects. We had 10 of our members there to network. The results everyone had a great time, three attendees took new member packets home and said they wanted to learn more, and there was at least one potential golf tournament sponsor identified Plus we got a nice mention by the Chamber in Facebook. The second event this month was the March in March at the Kiwanis Family House. Our club was well represented with 10 members attending. The event included a pancake breakfast, a goal to have enough people to hold hands all the way around the house (which we did), and a walk-a-thon around the house to earn money. In addition Guy Blair gave us a personal tour of the house. And to top it off, it couldn t have been a more beautiful day. It was a great day to have fun together. I m so proud of our club. 5 March 2017 Page Second Annual KCOLF Charity Golf Tournament Contributed by John and Judy Gho Our Second Annual Charity Golf Tournament is being held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Turkey Creek Golf Club. There are several ways that members can help to make this day even bigger and more successful than it was last year. Our prize committee is now gathering Raffle Prizes, Major Sponsors and Hole Sponsorships. If there is a Company you do business with: your Accountant, Lawyer, Landscaper, House Painter, Window Cleaner, Pest Control Service, etc., please ask them is they would be interested in becoming a sponsor at our golf tournament. (A hole sponsorship is only $ and it gets them lots of exposure for their business by having a sign on a golf hole and having their name printed in a brochure available at the award dinner.) If you need a sponsorship form, call John Gho at , and he will deliver a form to you to give to your contact If you would like to sponsor a hole on the golf course or provide a raffle prize, please contact John Gho, or you can Download the Forms from our Website at: Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School Building Up Grades Contributed by Beth Roberts Have you ever seen a movie where one event dramatically changes the path of someone s life, well with BUGs we have that opportunity. BUGs, or the Homework Club as the school calls it, helps children who are either struggling with their studies or are in a situation where they cannot get the help they need at home. Currently, the BUGs children are primarily Hispanic and do not have family members at home that speak English or for other reasons are unable to work with them on their homework. The children are bright and motivated and have dreams just like the other children, and we are able to help get them on the path to achieve their potential. The stories are endless. There are many small moments where we can see the differences we make. One young girl struggled to read a short story about why trees lose their leaves. We practiced and practiced and practiced each time she read it she improved. The lesson was to time their reading to see how many words they could read in a minute and over the days she improved from 59 to 102. She beamed and said, I am smart aren t I and took her timing sheet around the room and showed everyone. We will tell more stories in future newsletters. Why not join the group and experience those stories for yourself. Help change the path in a child s life. Join BUGs.

6 March 2017 Page 6 March 8, 2017 Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Network Mixer Contributed by Mary Luciano Our Kiwanis of Lincoln Foothills Board hosted the March Net Mixer that the Chamber has each month. In attendance were 30 members of the Lincoln Chamber and 10 Club Members. This gave us an opportunity to speak about Kiwanis and all the wonderful things we do in the community. We had two people take a membership application and we believe we have at least one sponsorship for the May Golf Tournament. I believe we did a great job of communicating our mission of serving the children of Lincoln and the community. Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School K-Kids Make Mice for SPCA Contributed by Mary Luciano Our K-Kids were busy this month. They made mice for the kittens at the SPCA. K-Kids First Fundraiser, raised $69.40 selling Valentine s Cards at the school. The kids made the cards and sold them before school and at lunch. This was a great lesson in planning for the event and working selling cards. Kids will do this fundraiser again next year. Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School K-Kids Acts of Kindness Contributed by Mary Luciano K-Kids will be doing Acts of Kindness around school involving all the students at the school. They are making signs and flyers for the April More details to follow...

7 March 2017 Page 7 April 1, 2017 Kiwanis One Day has become one of the most important days on the Kiwanis calendar. That is because, worldwide, Kiwanis clubs are showing off their best service work. What is Kiwanis One Day? It s a day of service not fundraising or socializing. The more hands we have helping, the more lives we will touch. Any project, big or small, is worth tackling. Projects include anything from building playgrounds to volunteering at a shelter to stocking shelves at a food pantry. Kiwanis One Day Projects Should: Be hands-on. Make a noticeable difference in your community. Involve a majority of your club s membership, prospective members and their families, as well as sponsored CKI, Key Club, Builders and K-Kids Clubs. Make an impact in your community that deserves news media coverage. Raise awareness about your club and Kiwanis International. Choose your service project and join Kiwanians worldwide for Kiwanis One Day, don t miss out on being a part of this day of global community service. Kiwanians will give more than one million volunteer hours on this special day to improve their communities and the lives of children in countless nations.

8 March 2017 Page 8 Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Pete Edwards Luncheon on Saturday, April 29 th, 2017 Members of the Kiwanis of Lincoln Foothills please consider attending this event. At our meeting on Friday, March 17 th we will have a sign-up sheet. We must report into our Lt. Governor Laird Smith how many of us are attending. For those of you who are looking to participate in an activity, this is a great way to start. You will meet other Kiwanians and here about special people who contribute to the success of Kiwanis. Join us for lunch and an afternoon of awards hosted by Cal-Nev-Ha Governor Pete Edwards. We will recognize one of our own Kiwanis members, fellow Kiwanians and community members with Distinguished Service Awards. Let s take pride in our club and have a great representation at the Governor s Luncheon.
