2 Who We Are The underlying premise of Bean s Cafe, Inc. is a deep belief in the inherent dignity of every person, a belief that people respond with kindness when treated kindly with trust when trusted, and respectfully when respected. Our aim is not to set up a value system determining what is right or wrong or a way of life for persons, but to allow them to form their own. In this situation a person is not pressured into acting in a special way, and their eventual response is free, lasting, and more fully themselves. - Bean s Cafe Founding Documents, 1979
3 Brief History Bean s Cafe Bean s Cafe began with a simple vision: a warm place where those in need can find com- fort, warmth, and a helping hand. Our organization was founded by Lynn Ballew, a professor and humanitarian. She and her daughter, nicknamed Bean, moved to Alaska in 1978 and immediately began to seek the help of the community to start her shelter, which she named Bean s Cafe. On February 20, 1979 Lynn leased an empty warehouse across from the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Anchorage. The first to arrive were the street people they helped paint, remodel, arrange furniture, and organize the space. Word spread of Lynn s efforts, and people from around the world came to offer their support. Soon Bean s Cafe was a vision realized a place for the homeless and hungry to eat, rest, read, watch TV, make a phone call, or just relax. In 1985, Bean s Cafe relocated to a brand new building with facilities, programs, and services and that is where it stands today, at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Karluk Street in the heart of Anchorage
4 Brief History The Children s Lunchbox In 2000, the Food Bank of Alaska recognized the problem of the quickly growing number of hungry children in Anchorage and gathered community leaders and organizations to address the problem. At that time there were around 10,000 hungry kids, since then that number has more than doubled to over 21,000. During the first community discussions Bean s Cafe was identified as a valuable resource with a wealth of knowledge on reaching the hungry. In 2004, Bean s Cafe s board of directors formed a new nonprofit, Kid s Cafe, and began providing snacks and meals to local community programs. In 2006, Kid s Cafe officially merged with Bean s Cafe and was reborn as the program now known as The Children s Lunchbox. In 2009, The Children s Lunchbox introduced a weekend food program at Mt. View Elementary and since then has grown to include seven Title I elementary schools in Anchorage. New sites are added regularly as we work to feed every hungry child in our community.

9 The Children s Lunchbox New Kitchen On June 21, 2017, The Children s Lunchbox and Bean s Cafe celebrated the grand opening of a new kitchen! We are grateful for the continued support in the fight to end child hunger in our community. We especially want to thank those who funded this project, including our leading funder Rasmuson Foundation, as well as the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Providence Health & Services Alaska, The Lindsey family along with Shoreside Petroleum, Inc. & Petro Marine Services, ConocoPhillips Alaska, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, First National Bank Alaska, GCI, Saltchuk family of companies, and many more! The Children s Lunchbox Kitchen is dedicated in memory of Dale Tran, a true catalyst for community!
