2 // ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION MISSION Based on the belief that all people deserve the dignity of a safe place to call home, Front Steps mission is to provide a pathway home through shelter, affordable housing, and community education. Providing excellent case management, support, and shelter services. Transitioning people experiencing chronic homelessness to a variety of sustainable housing options. Educating the community about the needs of men and women experiencing homelessness and innovative approaches to meeting those needs. BRIEF HISTORY OF Front Steps was formed in 1997 as the Capital Area Homeless Alliance in response to a recommendation of the Community Action Network s 1996 Comprehensive Plan for Addressing Homelessness. From its founding, our philosophy has been that all people deserve the dignity of a safe place to call home. In the early years, we served homeless clients a day from a small storefront location in downtown Austin. Today, Front Steps provides day resources to over 600 homeless men and women daily at 7th and Neches and provides emergency overnight shelter to 230 men each night.

3 // PROGRAMS Day Resource Center and Shelter Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) Showers Laundry lockers, phones, Mail bus passes Resources and referrals Computer Lab case Management, Day Sleep for men and women, Various support groups Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) 54 units of subsidized, scattered-site housing with Intensive case management and other support services to ensure the successful housing and community integration of each client. Frequent in-home case management meetings focus on housing stability, increasing self-sufficiency and selfdetermination Recuperative Care Program (RCP) Homeless clients who are too sick to be discharged to a shelter or the streets, but not sick enough to warrant acute hospital placement, are placed in a nursing home for the duration of their illness. Front Steps provides intensive case management to address income, housing, and self-care needs.

4 // HIGHLIGHTS The number of homeless people in Austin is declining Front Steps housed nearly 400 people last year. Front Steps served 36,500 hot meals last year. Front Steps facilitated 14,000 loads of laundry last year. It costs $10,600 to house/care for one person per year. Housing one person saves taxpayers $30,000 per year. 159 people died on the streets of Austin in Recuperative Care gives people a place to heal Less than 8% return to the streets after Recuperative Care Recuperative Care sharply reduces taxpayer-funded ER visits. Front Steps was awarded 3 YEAR SSVF Veteran Services Funding One thing is certain, no one ever hopes to be homeless. As children, no one ever says, When I grow up, I want to be homeless. However, homelessness is a reality in our community. Every day Front Steps serves homeless men and women, many of whom have lost hope. We strive to restore their hope and guide them home. We sincerely believe that homelessness is a journey, not a destination. Front Steps dedicated staff, board of directors, and volunteers ask you to join us on our Journey to Hope.

8 LUNCH 2015 // HONOREES Community Spirit Award Dr. Mark Hernandez, Chief Medical Officer, Community Care Collaborative Dr. Hernandez is working to make life healthier for people with little to no income. Healthcare of those experiencing homelessness is very costly, even for those on Medicaid. Dr. Hernandez explains the use of tax dollars this way, Through the collaborative, those dollars are in a common bucket, and we use those dollars to purchase care for the uninsured and underinsured. We know that bucket of money will not grow infinitely; it s not going to grow to whatever the need is. And yet the need is huge we had 211,000 uninsured people in Travis County in About 135,000 of those people were uninsured and living at 200 percent or less of the U.S. poverty level, so there s a lot of need. Social Impact Award Ann Howard, Executive Director of Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) Providing dynamic, proactive leadership that engages policy makers and the community to end homelessness. ECHO envisions a community fiercely committed to ending homelessness. ECHO is dedicated to planning, prioritizing, and developing strategies to end homelessness in Austin, TX. The U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development has designated ECHO as the Lead Agency for the Austin/Travis County Continuum of Care (CoC) for homeless services. In this role, ECHO identifies specific strategies and oversees ongoing planning efforts and implementation of Austin s plan to end chronic homelessness. Hope and Inspiration Award Ann E Teich Ms. Teich is a Devoted community advocate for Austin Independent School District, Religious Coalition to Assist the Homeless and Downtown Cluster of Congregations and Social Service Agencies. Ann has been a driving force in making certain the homeless population has been given a hand up whether it be homeless children in schools of the chronically homeless served in shelters. She is an inspiration to those who serve on boards and committees with her as well as hope for those who have lost hope.
