2016 Annual Report
About the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation Welcome The Coca-Cola Australia Foundation is a joint philanthropic initiative between Coca-Cola Amatil and Coca-Cola South Pacific, created to distribute $1.1 million annually. Our mission is to inspire moments of happiness and possibilities for young Australians aged 13 to 19 years. Since establishment in 2002, the CCAF has provided more than $13 million to hundreds of charities, positively impacting many young Australians. Our Grants The CCAF supports projects relevant to our mission that address the optimism, empowerment and wellbeing for young Australians aged 13-19, and/or offer young people increased possibilities for a positive life. Flagship Grants Flagship Grants support national charities with a clear and measurable program that addresses an issue aligned with the CCAF mission. Up to $200,000 is provided per year, for up to three consecutive years. Employee Connected Grants Employee Connected Grants are one-off grant projects in communities where our employees live, work or have a personal connection. They are a positive opportunity for Coca-Cola South Pacific and Coca-Cola Amatil staff to support charities they care about. 2
Annual Report: Message from the chair Message from the Chair It gives me great pleasure to present the work of the CCAF in At the start of 2016, we reviewed the CCAF mission and changed our grant structure to ensure we were able to help address the needs of young Australians in a way that aligned with our corporate values. Today our mission is to inspire moments of happiness and possibilities for young Australians. What truly makes CCAF unique is the genuine connection our employees have with the charity partners. Coca-Cola Amatil and Coca-Cola South Pacific employees are at the heart of fulfilling our mission and we are committed to supporting causes our employees are passionate about. To bring this to life, in 2016 we relaunched the CCAF with two new types of grants: Flagship Grants, to be major grant partners for CCAF over three years and Employee Connected grants, smaller, one-off grant projects in communities where our employees live, work or have a personal connection. In 2016, the CCAF contributed a total of more than $1,260,000 to charitable organisations and community groups across Australia. Through this funding, we support and make a positive impact in communities where we have a presence, and build meaningful partnerships with inspirational organisations. I have visited many of the supported charities to experience their work first hand, and greatly enjoyed meeting the inspiring individuals behind these organisations. These people are hugely passionate about their causes and exemplify the fantastic work being done in communities across Australia. We re very proud of the work achieved by the CCAF over the past year, and it is of course important to acknowledge the role of our Coca-Cola Amatil and Malcolm Hudson with Ronnie Benbow, Founder of Flagship Partner, The Carers Foundation Coca-Cola South Pacific employees in this success. The level of involvement from our employees is testament to their true commitment to the communities in which we live and work. At the CCAF, we understand our job is far from over and are committed to continuing our mission to create moments of happiness and inspiration for young people in Australia. There is a lot we can achieve and we look forward to what the future holds. Malcolm Hudson, Chair, The Coca-Cola Australia Foundation Notes: This $1.1m total is made up of funding from both Coca-Cola Amatil and Coca-Cola South Pacific and the full amount may not be granted out in any given year due to partnership or Foundation timelines. Any funds not granted are held over and granted the following years. 3
Our Flagship Partners
Our Flagship Partners The CCAF Flagship Grants support major charity programs that address an issue aligned with the CCAF mission to inspire moments of happiness and possibilities for young Australians. The CCAF partners with its flagship charities over a three-year period, with funding of up to $200,000 provided annually. In coming years, the CCAF hopes to provide additional support to these organisations, from skill sharing and hosting workshops to ideation sessions. The Song Room, Raise Foundation and The Carers Foundation are our current flagship partners. 5
Our Flagship Partners THE SONG ROOM ArtsConnect Youth Settlement The Song Room uses music and arts to brighten the futures of Australia s most disadvantaged young people through tailored, high-quality programs, delivered in partnership with schools. In partnership with the CCAF, The Song Room has developed its unique ArtsConnect program. Targeting refugee youth who have recently arrived in Australia, the music and arts program is designed to assist academic, social and language development, while supporting students in their adjustment to school and life in Australia. Thanks to the CCAF funding, The Song Room expects its creative programs to positively impact more than 1,000 young people in four schools across Australia in These innovative arts programs will see students try their hands at a variety of creative activities, from puppet making to hip hop dance and African drumming. Students learn to play the drums at Noble Park English Language School in Victoria Caroline said: Thanks to the generous support of the CCAF, The Song Room is able to support the social, personal and educational development of thousands of young people who are new to Australia. Many of these young people come from challenging backgrounds, and it s crucial that they are given opportunities to access education and participate in activities they enjoy. to better deliver our programs. This would not have been possible without the shared vision and commitment to bridging education gaps in Australia. Now the groundwork for the program s success has well and truly been laid, The Song Room will also begin rolling out a range of complementary activities to enhance students learning. These activities include holiday programs to engage parents and communities and performances to build skills, develop confidence, and teamwork. CEO of The Song Room, Caroline Aebersold, said the partnership had made a clear difference to a significant number of disadvantaged young refugees in Australia. The Foundation has so far assisted The Song Room with a range of valuable capacitybuilding activities that allow us By the end of the three-year program, it is estimated that The ArtsConnect program will have supported more than 4,200 young refugees living in Australia. 6
Our Flagship Partners RAISE FOUNDATION In School Mentoring Program (ISMO) Raise Foundation provides best practice mentoring programs to increase the well-being of young people in Australia. The charity believes mentoring from a positive role model during the teenage years provides a nurturing pathway for young people and helps them feel supported at a crucial time in their life. It s been a busy time for Raise Foundation since the CCAF partnership was announced. The organisation s aim for the first year is for more than 100 young people to participate in the program and be matched with a Raise mentor as a direct result of the CCAF funding. Speaking about the grant, Vicki Condon, CEO at Raise Foundation said the partnership with the CCAF had enabled the charity to grow in more ways than one. Vicki said: Not only is the financial support extremely generous to help us achieve our stretch goals, but there A mentor speaks to a student at Killara High School is a whole extra level of support in terms of credibility, relationships and skill sharing that makes a huge impact in an organisation like ours. There are plenty of opportunities for us to get involved with the CCAF in the future, from speaking at partner events to participating in ideation sessions, and these add so much value to our capability and our capacity. It is encouraging and inspiring, and we are excited about what we can achieve together over the coming years. Developing relationships with mentors at an early life stage means that a young person is more likely to stay resilient, capable and connected into adulthood. Raise Mentors support their mentee to build relationships, increase resilience and coping skills, advance their goal setting ability, engage with education, build employability skills and most importantly, learn how to find a trusted adult in their lives to ask for help. The CCAF partnership will be instrumental in progressing the charity s long-term goal of introducing the ISMO program to every high school in Australia. 7
Our Flagship Partners THE CARERS FOUNDATION Joy and Inspiration Project The Carers Foundation supports carers across Australia who care for a loved one without pay. The areas the charity aims to help will include social isolation, health and wellbeing issues, and mental health conditions. The Carers Foundation launched the Joy and Inspiration Project thanks to funding from the CCAF. The program aims to provide support to young people caring for family members with illness, disability, mental health or substance abuse issues. The project invites young Carers to a private retreat to engage in activities aimed at addressing improved health and wellness, including stress management and self-care. Run by volunteers, the program also encourages the participants to have fun and enjoy the freedom of being young something that is often lacking in their dayto-day responsibilities. The Carers Foundation has ambitious plans over the threeyear CCAF partnership, with an aim to run at least 10 retreats each year, helping as many as Young carers have fun at a The Carers Foundation retreat 100 young people annually. They are also looking to expand the program to provide ongoing follow-up assistance for project participants. Ronnie Benbow, Founder of The Carers Foundation, said the funding would provide many young carers with hope for the future. Ronnie said: It is truly incredible to have the support of the CCAF. Carers usually have little time for themselves and things in life we all take for granted, such as seeing our friends, are activities that are foreign to these young people. Our retreat provides a safe place for Carers to put their own health first and connect with likeminded people. Ronnie said: Our program is not just about providing temporary help it s about helping young Carers find ongoing strategies to deal with their situation and enabling them to think positively about the future. We show them how their experiences have positively impacted them and encourage them to develop long-term goals for a brighter future. 8
Employee Connected Grants
Employee Connected Grants In 2016, the CCAF set up Employee Connected Grants, a program where Coca-Cola South Pacific and Coca-Cola Amatil employees can endorse a charitable organisation to apply for a grant of up to $25,000 from the CCAF. All charity nominations must align with the CCAF mission to inspire moments of happiness and possibilities in young Australians. The CCAF received an overwhelming response from employees nominating a wide array of charities around Australia, with strong personal connections seeded throughout. Many employees had experience volunteering at their chosen organisation and had seen the positive impact the charity had on their communities. Others had directly benefitted from their charity s support and wanted to help extend the assistance to others facing similar situations. This program led to the CCAF providing 33 employee nominated organisations with more than $750,000 collectively in grants, enabling charities to further positively impact young Australians across the country. These are just some of the 2016 Employee Connected Grant stories. 10
Employee Connected Grants WEST AUSTRALIAN FOUNDATION FOR DEAF The West Australian Foundation for Deaf Children (WAFDC) promotes and supports education and learning opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing young people. The organisation was nominated for a grant by Coca-Cola Amatil employee Christopher Gifford, because of he and his daughter s own experience with hearing loss. Knowing just how important support is for children with hearing loss and their families, Christopher saw an opportunity to help those in similar circumstances. He is now part of the WAFDC parent mentor group who provide mentoring services to parents of deaf children. Coca-Cola Amatil employee Christopher Gifford and his family at a WAFDC event. Photo courtesy of WAFDC Christopher said: Support for young people diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing and their families is crucial to ensure they can reach their full potential. Being a parent mentor with the WAFDC has enabled me to connect with other people and families who have been on this journey. or hard of hearing participate in fun adventure activities including archery, flying foxes and vertical challenges. Those attending the course will also take part in the Rock and Water anti-bullying program, a strength building exercise that provides strategies for young people who find themselves facing bullying. The WADFC The Deaf Strengths camp will take place in October 2017 and will see up to 60 young people who are deaf 11
Employee Connected Grants THE HELMSMAN PROJECT The Helmsman Project helps young people develop important life and job readiness skills, so they can overcome setbacks and find the confidence to pursue their dreams. The organisation primarily works with Year 9 students in disadvantaged communities. A student presents to his peers. Photo courtesy of The Helmsman Project Research shows Year 9 is an important stage in young people s development, and the skills they develop at this age play a critical role in determining their engagement in education and shaping their future. Simon Edgar, Former Director of Marketing and Strategy at Coca-Cola Amatil, nominated the charity because of the project s potential to inspire disadvantaged young people at a crucial time in their development. Simon has been involved with the organisation for many years and has advised on The Helmsman Project s long-term strategy. The funding boost from the CCAF enabled The Helmsman Project to expand its program to Year 9 students at Cumberland High School in Western Sydney. As part of the project, students are tasked to design and present a community project in an area they were passionate about, with the chance to win up to $1,000 towards implementing it in their local area. Following assessment by a panel of experts, the money was awarded to a group of students who proposed creating care packages to help the homeless people of Parramatta. Supported by The Helmsman Project coaches, the successful students will now work with the Parramatta Mission to make their vision a reality. Simon said: The Helmsman Project runs programs to develop essential life skills for young Australians, through coaching and experiential learning. Through my work with the charity, I have seen first-hand how this empowers these students and increases their possibilities for a more positive future. It s work I m incredibly proud to support. 12
Employee Connected Grants HEARTKIDS HeartKids provides support for young people living with congenital/childhood heart disease and their families. With the help of the CCAF funding, the charity will host the HeartKids Teen Camp in January At the camp, young people with congenital/ childhood heart disease across Australia will be invited to stay for the weekend on the picturesque Rottnest Island to participate in fun-filled activities including snorkelling, swimming, team challenges, theatre sports and an island tour. The aim of the camp is to create and foster social support networks, and boost the self-esteem of young people affected by congenital/ childhood heart disease. What s more, the supported environment enables them to participate in activities that they would not otherwise be able to do. The HeartKids team and charity members pose for a photo. Photo courtesy of HeartKids Douglas Phillips, Former Head of Commercial at Coca-Cola South Pacific, nominated HeartKids after his daughter was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Having been directly involved with the organisation, Douglas saw an opportunity to help the charity provide assistance to more families affected by the condition. Douglas said: HeartKids provides much needed support to families and young people affected by congenital heart disease, by creating support networks and raising valuable funds which contribute to medical research into this area. Douglas said: I ve seen first-hand the community spirit and positive effects HeartKids can have on young people and their families who have been affected. 13
