GIVING OUR COMMUNITIES A HELPING HAND COMMUNITY INVESTMENT REPORT 2011 Students from Clontarf Academy
Livvi s Place COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS At Leighton Contractors, our Community Investment program is growing and helping more and more people in the communities in which we work. The program commits at least 0.4 per cent of company profit to community groups and focuses on three core areas: Disadvantaged youth Indigenous people The environment In the past year: We ve given almost $2 million to our community partners, charities and other causes About 500 of our people have provided more than 6000 hours of their time, skills and expertise to community groups We ve directly positively impacted the lives of more than 400 young people needing support We ve contributed to important environmental work We ve signed our first community partnership with a charity in New Zealand Our people have donated $73,217 of their own money to the victims of the damaging Queensland floods We hope you re inspired by this report to become involved and help enhance the lives of people who need support. 2 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
Touched by Olivia A unique award-winning playground in the Sydney suburb of Five Dock has developed into our newest Community Investment partnership across Australia. In 2009, NSW Construction built Livvi s Place, an all abilities playground specially designed and built to cater for all ages and abilities. The playground was built for the Touched by Olivia Foundation, an organisation established in memory of Olivia Perkins, who died from a rare illness at the age of eight months. The foundation aims to improve the health and happiness of children by building playgrounds for children of all abilities to play side by side and by raising funds for the Sydney Children s Hospital. Livvi s Place is the first playground of its kind in Australia. Visitors have increased from 150 people a week to over 1800 every week. At any time, over 10% of the visitors have a form of disability. Livvi s Place has won the Best Playspace in Australia, the Public Works Engineering Australia Engineering Excellence Award and 2011 World Leisure International Innovation Award. Leighton Contractors has now formed a national partnership with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and we re committed to building similar playgrounds in other States. The next playgrounds are being planned for Victoria, WA and SA. Leighton Contractors Deputy Managing Director Michael Metcalfe says Livvi s Place is the best community initiative he has ever been involved with and he is passionate about Leighton Contractors building similar playgrounds elsewhere. The impact on families using Livvi s Place has been even greater. As one mother summarized the impact on her child: Most times, Clare is a bystander, while her sister climbs, slides, swings and squeals with pleasure and excitement. But on that day, Clare was just like everyone else, joining in and giving it a go, wheelchair and all on the way home, she kept singing MORE, MORE, MORE, which was wonderful to see. 4 Disadvantaged Youth Beacon Foundation Our Community Investment program is helping to create opportunities for disadvantaged young people across Australia through our partnership with the Beacon Foundation. Beacon is a national organisation that works in more than 120 secondary schools to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds fulfil their potential. I learnt how to be successful and achieve my goals by pursuing them. Beacon Student The program creates a better company profile and possible future workers who have been inspired by attending this course. Leighton Contractors has supported Beacon for four years. Our Leighton Unlocked program showcases to Beacon students the diversity of our work and career options, and the positive benefits of a working life. Last year 10 workshops were held with Beacon schools across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and WA involving 60 mentors from our company. The feedback from students and mentors shows the value these opportunities create. Our main aim with Beacon now is to provide employment opportunities for Beacon students. Every LCPL business unit is committed to employing someone from a Beacon school. For more information: LCPL Mentor Safe Driving The Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative, run by Northern Construction, is now in its fourth year. In 2011, the initiative has provided training for 630 school-based learner drivers from 18 secondary state schools across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, the Gold Coast, Townsville and Gladstone. Each student receives five hours of free professional on-road driving tuition with an approved driving school. The initiative is focused on schools in communities with a high level of social need such as economic and cultural disadvantage. Since its launch in 2008, nearly 13,000 students have attended road safety education presentations held by Leighton Contractors and more than 11,000 hours of free professional driving tuition has been provided to about 2,200 young drivers. For more information susie.bridle@leicon.com.au. I think the program is a great idea and it should continue for many years to come. I think it may help prevent further accidents among teen drivers Student 4 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
Indigenous Leighton Contractors is committed to further developing its work with and for Indigenous communities. This is happening both through our daily business and through our Community Investment activities. Our Community Investment focus on Indigenous issues includes partnerships with the Clontarf Foundation, AIEF and Garnduwa. Clontarf Foundation Through the Clontarf Football academies, Clontarf Foundation strives to improve the education, discipline, self esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men. One of our great success stories is Dylan Haynes, a former Clontarf Foundation student who started with Leighton Contractors as a member of the Aboriginal School Based Apprenticeship program. Dylan left his family in the NT to move to Perth to complete his secondary education at Clontarf Aboriginal College and become a qualified boilermaker welder. In August this year, Dylan was named the Indigenous Apprentice of the Year at the WA Group Training Awards. For more information: AIEF AIEF is a non profit organisation focused on empowering indigenous children in financial need to build a future through quality education and careers. Our support provides 7 education scholarships in AIEF partner schools each year. We also find training opportunities within our business to support the learning journey and potential careers of young Aboriginal students. Kirsty Jarratt, an AIEF student given work experience in the Leighton Contractors head office in Sydney, has produced artwork for the company s 2011 Christmas card. For more information: Garnduwa Our partnership with Garnduwa was started by the late John Jones, who had a passion for football and helping young Indigenous people. In 2011, the Kimberley football team supported by Leighton Contractors won the Landmark Country Football Championship. The players were even more excited when they met and heard presentations from former star AFL players Troy Cook and David Wirrpanda. 5 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
Environment Overall a great experience working with the Earthwatch team. It really was an eye opener, and having the ability to physically contribute to the project was very rewarding. LCPL Volunteer Earthwatch Earthwatch is a scientist-led organisation committed to managing the environmental impacts of human activities and conducting research into species ecology, habitat management and the effects of climate change. Our partnership with Earthwatch provides our people opportunities to work beside scientists on a range of educational and experiential field programs. In 2011, over 300 or our people joined Earthwatch in a range of interesting initiatives that provided rewarding experiences. Scientist for a Day projects that our people participated in ranged from observing microbats in Melbourne to finding the elusive Rakaili water rat in Sydney s Northhead to observing the plastics being ingested by the beautiful turtles off North Stradbroke Island in Queensland. The most intensive part of our Earthwatch partnership was a six-day field trip to Lord Howe Island for five people from the Emerging Leaders program. They spent the time with CSIRO scientists and key Earthwatch personnel to understand the impacts we have on the environment and develop recommendations on how to improve LCPL s practices. To celebrate World Environment Day, 50 people from the Resources Division were shown how to create a ClimateWatch trail at Perth s Piney Lakes. Earthwatch s ClimateWatch is an online climate change monitoring program allowing each of us to participate with the scientific community in making observations and recording data. Over 200 of our people have already registered. If you would like to get involved, visit For more information: 6 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
Tour de Freedom The Leighton Contractors Tour de Freedom is an annual cycling event that raises funds for Teen Challenge, one of the most successful drug rehabilitation programs in the world. The event was created by the late Kari Rummukainen, founder and Managing Director of Broad. The gruelling event covers 1000 kilometres in five days, finishing in the Perth city centre. In 2010, 26 cyclists and 12 support crew raised $195,000. This year s event involved over 40 riders, with funds still being tallied. As Visionstream General Manager Ric Oldham commented, it s a great tour, one hell of a challenge and a worthy cause. For more information: Disaster Support Coming together in times of need In addition to our formal Community Investment program, our people also regularly contribute funds along with their time and skills in times of need following natural disasters. The Queensland floods and the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 resulted in one of our biggest annual fundraising efforts. In Brisbane, our people worked individually and collectively to clear debris and repair essential communication services and infrastructure. Many of our projects adopted community organisations affected by the floods. The communities supported include: South Brisbane District Cricket Club Southside Eagles Football Club Warwick and District Dirt Bike Club Western Districts Community Sports Club Western Districts Netball Association Inc. Yeronga Football Club. 7 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
More opportunities to get involved In 2012, we ll be developing more opportunities for our people to become involved in Community Investment activities. We ll also release a volunteering Business Standard outlining your ability to volunteer during work hours. If you are interested in knowing more about Community Investment opportunities in your area, contact your Community Facilitator. Details can be found on the Leighton Contractors intranet by selecting the Community link under Corporate Affairs and Communication. 8 Community Investment Annual Report 2011
