Box 121 ATHELSTONE SA 5076 Secretary Tim Mee THE COG - RCM Meeting 1658 Bulletin 31 January 2018 President s News From the President:29 January 2018 Our first regular meeting for the year at the Rezz Hotel was attended by 20 members with apologies from many of those still away on vacation. We look forward to seeing increasing numbers as we head into February and the start of many of our Clubs community activities. At the meeting we welcomed our Group 7, Assistant Governor, David Jones, who gave a presentation on Rotary activities and Club Citations and presented the Club with a 100% Centurion Award Banner to RCM for 2016/2017. The award which came with congratulations from D.G. Bob Cooper, was accepted on behalf of all members by P.P. Brenton Summers. As members have identified Service within our community is of great importance to the Club and needs to be well balanced with fund raising and other activities. Community and Youth Directors, Graeme Packer and Sabrina Koetsier, have provided information to be found in the CoG and other media, that details our involvement in community activities such as Star Disco, Norwood Pageant, Breast Cancer Run, Weetabix Kids, Community Shed, Kiosk duties and Polio Ute as well as RYDA, RYLA, One and All, Community Award to Yr. 11 students and our sponsorship of Indigenous University students. While this is not the complete list it does identify that our community service is alive and well while our fund raising continues towards our PNG Midwifery project (look for regular reports on this project from International Director and President Elect, Paul Haylock, in future editions of the CoG). Ideas on future community activities are always welcome and encouraged from members. Apologies to members for an incomplete Rotary program as yet, but working to ensure this will be rectified in the near future and copies distributed. In regard to nominations for future Club and Board positions, you will remember from the AGM that we did not succeed in having a nomination for President for 2018/2019 however one member has now put his name forward. More information will be sent to members shortly. Finally, it looks as though the weather will be kind to us for the February Moonlight market this Friday, where D.G. Disco as 28th April, 2018 at 242 North East Road, Klemzig 5087 (starting at 5.00pm). Again we supply the BBQ & Food cook and serve on the night. We start setting up approx 4.30/4.45pm start cooking by about 5.00pm serve when it s ready. Approx 2-3 cookers and serving 3-4 on the night. 4 Club News APOLOGIES for weekly meetings to Djuro Rakic or KIOSK Paul Haylock is now the go to person for the kiosk float bag. Shelter Box Update We have been advised by Shelter Box that they have had a change of focus and the most recent funding our club has provided has seen shelter box contents modified to include tools and building materials that are required to assist restoration of dignity and a more comfortable existence whilst other aid arrives. Our Club has provided three thousand dollars from the Picnic in the Park in 2017 and we have recently been advised that the funds have been directed to fund three shelter boxes to War torn Syria. In recent years there has been a need for the needs of Disaster Victims to be met by a tailored solution in each area and this action places the needs of victims of the conflict to be better met by Rotary with building materials. We are making a Difference - PNG Midwife Project Update After much careful, and often tedious work, a District Grant has been approved for $21,000 and a Global Grant application has been submitted to District for forwarding to the US for consideration. The Global Grant seeks $60,000 in Foundation funding over three years to go towards the project costs. The project will give PNG midwifes the skills and confidence through a mentoring programme to better manage births in their country. PNG has infant and mother mortality rates close to those of third world Countries and it is hoped this initiative will significantly improve outcomes for mothers and babies in PNG. The Australian College of Midwifes and the PNG Midwifes Society are partnering with RC Morialta and RC Port Moresby to develop a buddy program aimed at providing midwifes in PNG with better skills and confidence to manage deliveries in remote villages and towns in PNG. The participation of a PNG club is a requirement of the Global Grant process to have Rotarians in the host country supporting the project and we have enlisted their support of will ask the Port Moresby Rotarians to assist with hosting visiting midwifes from Australia and sourcing cheaper internet and telephone communication avenues. Our Clubs initial commitment will be $25,000 and other funds will be sought from other Rotary Clubs and interested members of the public. The project budget over three years is in the region of $150,000 with the Foundation providing much of the funding providing an excellent return on our previous donations to the Foundation. A RAWCS application to recognise the project and provide an avenue for tax deducible donation has also been submitted to District. Our work with the Australian College of Midwifes will see them develop the training and mentoring programme and follow through with all midwifes participating in the programme to ensure quality outcomes are delivered. RC Morialta commitment is for three years and depending on interest from other clubs and other sponsors small amounts may be required to sustain the project. It is clear that if all goes to plan young lives and those of mothers will be enhanced through this programme. So we will make a difference through Rotary and matching grants from the Rotary Foundation. We will endeavour to keep members up to date with any developments through the COG and meetings. Page 4

5 Other News Twilight Cruise on the 'One & All' - Final Call Our inaugural Youth Sailing Experience program has been most successful and a number of local Rotary Clubs have sponsored young people to take part in a voyage later this month to Port Lincoln on the 'One & All' sail training vessel. As a result of this connection, some Rotary Clubs have expressed an interest in taking part in a social, day sail for their members on the 'One & All.' We are happy to announce that a twilight cruise has been organised on Saturday, 24th February 2018, departing at 5:00 pm from Port Adelaide. Sumptuous food will be served as we sail into the sunset! The cost will be $100 per head, dependent on our filling the ship, which can carry 40 passengers. Positions on this cruise are now on sale to all Rotarians and their friends, however they are filling fast! Please book promptly to avoid disappointment. BOOKINGS ARE NOW OPEN!!
