10 The Difference Your Help Makes to Our Young Patients Jack Munro At just 5 weeks old baby Jack was rushed to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, struggling to breathe. Tucked up in an incubator in the back of a neonatal ambulance, he slept for the entire 150 mile journey to the hospital from his home in Aberdeen. The cardiology team identified that Jack was suffering from atrioventricular septal defect, a form of congenital heart disease, and had 3 holes in his heart. At first Jack was too small for the live-saving surgery he required, but after 12 long weeks he was finally ready for open heart surgery. The surgery was a success, and while Jack will require follow up appointments throughout his life, he made it home for his first Christmas and is now a bouncing, happy boy. In 2015 our Christmas Appeal raised 150,000 to purchase a state-of-theart 4D cardiac scanner. The scanner provides unprecedented levels of accuracy when scanning children s hearts, and will help to ensure that children like Jack receive the best possible care and treatment for heart conditions. 8
11 Zoe Little Zoe is 16 years old and was born with spina bifida, a condition that affects the development of the spine. Zoe spent her first year in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill, enduring 10 operations during that time. When Zoe was eventually able to go home after her year in hospital, she required 20 different types of medication and was tube fed due to the complexity of her condition. To date, Zoe has undergone 48 different operations on her spine, bowel, bladder and throat, and continues to receive treatment at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. As regular visitors to the hospital, Zoe and her mum Jacque were involved with the design of the accessible rooms at the hospital, ensuring that children with accessible needs are as comfortable as possible during their stay. Zoe is a remarkable young woman, and has spoken about the difference that the charity makes to patients like her at events across the country. Thanks to supporters like you, we can help children like Jack and Zoe receive the best possible care during their time in hospital. Thank you. 9
