A Little About Us The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) was founded in 1971, known then as the Animal Welfare Trust. We had our own first rescue and rehoming centre in 1981, having worked from rented space before. We now have five rehoming centres, rehoming up to 1,800 animals a year. In 2015, we became the first rehoming charity in the UK use Open Paw for our dogs. Open Paw provides enrichment, training and social skills for our dogs, helping them to show themselves in the best light to find new homes. We are working towards providing an Open Paw provide for the cats in our care. Each centre runs events throughout the year to raise funds for the animals in our care. Take a look at the Events Section on our website and join us on one of our days! We have 500 volunteers who support the work we do. 137 the average spent on vet fees per animal rehomed. 40 would help towards neutering a cat. 35 would pay for an animal s vaccinations. 10 would buy a cosy bed for a dog. 6 would feed a rabbit for a week. SEPT

Fundraising Success Stories Angel found herself in the care of the staff and volunteers at NAWT Somerset. It was found that she had a Parathyroid tumour, which is an uncommon illness is dogs, needing an operation costing 4,000. Four staff members carried out the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge to raise funds for Angel s tumour treatment and after care. Despite some challenging weather the team thoroughly enjoyed their experience, which consisted of a 25- mile trek and a 5,000ft ascent across three of Yorkshire s highest peaks! Black ice and snow blizzards did their best to knock the ladies off course and meant they didn t quite make it to the third and final peak but with no clear paths and poor visibility, safety was paramount and we re extremely proud of what they have achieved. Dave Parks at Land s End Jackie with some of her hand made toys Dave Parkes and a group of friends took to the roads in September to ride more than 100 miles a day for the John O Groats to Lands End challenge in just seven days. Jackie is turning brand new socks into soft cuddly animals in order to raise money for NAWT Thurrock Branch. She came across the idea while searching the web for unusual crafty ideas. Now Jackie produces two or three toys a week from cute caterpillars to cheeky monkeys. Jackie, from Thurrock, first started volunteering as a dog walker for the branch. She said: I work full time and wanted to do something that would provide a way of relaxing after work and raise money. It makes me proud to think that for just a little bit of my time I can help pay for some food for the week. SEPT

Raising Sponsorship Money Charity begins at home Ask family and friends to sponsor you, either via JustGiving or with a Sponsorship Form. Most people will donate to charity, but few do so without being asked! JustGiving is an online sponsorship facility, and it could not be easier to use! Using JustGiving is a great way for people to share your sponsorship page and help raise more money. If you fundraise using JustGiving, the sponsorship money comes straight to us, so you don t have to worry about collecting money and sending it on. Don t forget to ask family and friends to take a Sponsorship Form and raise money (a copy is available at the end of the pack). Your change can help change the lives of many animals UK taxpayers can Gift Aid their donation, enabling us to receive an extra 25% of the supporter s donation at no cost to them! Ask supporters to choose to Gift Aid their donation to help boost your fundraising total. Please ensure any supporters who select Gift Aid fill in their full name and address on the sponsorship form and that all sponsorship forms are sent on to us. By being positive and enthusiastic, people will know that they are supporting a worthwhile cause and helping animals in need. We can provide you with additional promotional literature for approaching potential supporters. Top Tip! Try asking your local supermarket, restaurant, pub, garden centre or other local business to support you. Explain what you are planning to do and why, they may allow you to hold a collection. SEPT

Organising an event Running an event can seem daunting, but with simple planning, you can ensure your event goes smoothly and is a huge success. This guide is a starting point of things you need to consider. Let s start at the beginning What kind of event do you want to organise? Set yourself a realistic fundraising target. Audience Who are you going to target the event at? How will you make the event attractive to them? Who can help you make it a success? Do you know someone who is great on social media? Ask them to help! Ask for help from your local community, can people help bake cakes for the day? Pick your date Choose a date that doesn t clash with other local events, and choose a date when your friends and family can attend and help. Where are you going to hold the event? Points to consider when looking at venues: Location, parking, disabled access Equipment available Dressing, changing rooms, toilets, cloakrooms Fire regulations, insurances, capacity Catering facilities Cost of hire, is there a reduced charity rate? Top Tips! Tell everyone why you are fundraising! Build their support through your passion. Write a plan to help keep yourself organised whilst planning your event. Risk Assessment Pre-empt what you can do if things do not go to plan. Completing a Risk Assessment will help prepare you for events. If you would like help with this, please get in touch. Costs We have included an Income and Expenditure Planner to help with your planning, on page 11. Tell everyone about it! Spread the word about what you are doing! Get in touch with the local paper, use Facebook and Twitter to promote your day and ask people to share your story! Event Day! Factor in extra time to get everything ready Meet with all your volunteers to ensure they are comfortable and confident Have a list of phone numbers of all your contacts Make sure all rooms/activities are adequately signposted Have a volunteer greeting people as they arrive How does your venue look? Finishing touches are important Try to record the event in photos and get some quotes from people that attend Relax and enjoy it! SEPT

Fundraising and the Law It is important that any activity you run to fundraise is legal and safe for you and the public taking part, there are a great many rules and regulations that need to be followed. You are responsible for ensuring that any event you organise in aid of the National Animal Welfare Trust complies with the law. NAWT cannot and does not accept liability for events run in its name. If you have any concerns, please contact us and we ll be happy to help! Some tips to help you: It is a legal requirement to include National Animal Welfare Trust s charity number on all printed materials e.g. letters, posters, tickets etc. Our registered charity number is Street and store collections are a great way to fundraise and raise awareness of the charity within the local community. Please get in touch with the manager at your local NAWT centre to discuss running a street collection. Permission needs to be sought from the local authority for street collections (or selling items for charity). If you are planning an event in a public place, contact your local police station to let them know. Shopping centres are classed as private land, and permission will need to be obtained from the manager. Raffle Guidelines A raffle taking place at an exempt entertainment event (e.g. fete, dinner dance or sporting event i.e. not an event where the raffle is the main attraction) does not have to be registered with a local authority or gaming board. However, some conditions must be met: The raffle should not include any cash prizes. The sale of tickets and the announcement of the winners must take place on the same day as the event. The total sum of bought prizes on offer should not exceed 250. Donated prizes in excess of 250 are acceptable. You can offer alcohol as a prize without the need to obtain a liquor licence but you must not sell tickets to under 18s. We recommend that you buy a book of cloakroom tickets which can either be sold individually or as a strip. However, you must not offer an incentive of five for the price of four, for example. If you wish to run a raffle which is not considered part of an exempt entertainment event, there are very strict and complex laws relating to raffles and lotteries. Please get in touch with us so we can help you with the process. SEPT

Income & Expenditure Planner Use this planner to help with organising an event. Decide a target for how much you would like to raise. List all the things you might need to spend any money on (A), for example: Venue hire Publicity/printing costs/advertising Decorations Entertainers Prizes/refreshments Transport Phone bills, postage and other admin Insurance First aid provision St John Ambulance or Red Cross volunteers can provide this at low cost Volunteer expenses It is a good idea to add 10 per cent as contingency money in case something occurs that you had not anticipated. List all the ways you plan to raise money (B), for example: Entrance fees? Sponsorship? Raffles? Sale of refreshments and/or goods? Money-making sideshows and stalls? Charging stallholders or catering suppliers? Programme/brochure? Car parking? Calculate the total raised (C) If the total doesn t match your target, then you need to adjust your plans. Maybe increase the ticket prices, think of additional ways to raise money on the day, or cut down your expenses. Plan out your costs in advance to make sure that your planned income is more than your expenses. Use this template to also work out your actual costs and income after the event. Top Tip! Having a well thought out plan will help ensure your fundraising is a huge success. SEPT

A Expenditure Venue hire Catering Equipment Amount ( ) Total expenditure B Income Sponsorship money Ticket sales (x tickets at y each) Raffle Total Income C Amount Raised Income (B) minus expenditure (A) = amount raised SEPT

Include information on why you have chosen to raise money for National Animal Welfare Trust. Use your signature to include an appeal for sponsorship and tell people about your event. Include a link to your JustGiving website to encourage donations. Send updates on your progress Use a blog, or a Facebook group to let people know how much you have raised and how much more you are looking to raise for the National Animal Welfare Trust.
