I would like to thank everyone that attended and helped support our data analytics conference in Blacksburg in January. We had another successful training event! We are currently planning a mini fraud conference for May, to be held in Roanoke. This conference proved to be a success last year and we are confident we will see similar results this year! We currently need volunteers to help plan events and perform other roles in the chapter. We have several volunteer opportunities available including event planning, website updating, assisting with our annual audit, etc. Time commitments vary, so there is something for everyone. The Southwest Virginia Chapter is seeking an auditor to review/audit our financial records, which is an annual requirement by the IIA. (It only takes a few hours as our Treasurer maintains meticulous records.) The audit needs to be completed by August 31. Our Chapter will offer a free class registration or up to a $100 off an upcoming Chapter event for anyone volunteering to do the audit this year. 3 Seeking IIA Chapter Volunteers The Southwest Virginia Chapter of the IIA is seeking volunteers to either serve on the Board of Governors in the next year or to assist us in creating programs for CPE events. Volunteers play a key role and the contributions they make impact the day-to-day functions of internal auditors, as well as shape the future of the internal audit profession. We are looking for new or current Chapter members who would like to participate by joining our Board of Governors and assisting in the planning of training events and promoting our profession. The Southwest Chapter leadership determines, develops and supports programs, events, and local training to provide low cost CPE and networking opportunities for our membership. We are one of the smallest chapters in the IIA and are always seeking to meet and work with other audit professionals in our area. The time commitment for officers is only about hours a year, much less for members who wish to help and network with their peers in the profession. Chapter officers receive generous registration fee discounts for our events. Did you know that a maximum of 30 CPE hours towards your CIA requirements may be awarded in the participation category in each two year period for participation as an officer or committee member in a professional industry organization related to internal auditing? One CPE hour for each hour of qualifying participation will be awarded. (See theiia.org for more details.) We also support our officers financially to attend IIA Regional and National conference opportunities. If you are interested in serving as a chapter leader or volunteer to assist us with our programs, please contact any of the board members listed on our contact page. 3

4 Our Most Recent Training Event On January 23, 2018 the Chapter held a one-day training (8 CPE) on the subjects of Data Analytics and Risk Assessments, presented by Raven Catlin, CEO & Lead Trainer at Raven Global Training, LLC. We had eighteen attendees, representing Virginia Tech, the City of Roanoke, Anthem, the Office of the State Inspector General and the Commerce Bank of Kansas City, Mo. The event provided the attendees with hands-on training and the opportunity to meet and work with people from other internal audit organizations. Thank you to Raven Catlin and all the attendees for their support of our Chapter events. Save the Date! 2018 Mini-Fraud Conference May 4, 2018 The Southwest Virginia Chapter is holding a training event on May 4, 2018 at the Hollins Library in Roanoke County. Last year s spring event was well attended and so successful, we have decided to do it again. This year s Mini Fraud Conference will provide our members an opportunity to meet and discuss current topics with a host of speakers. One of our missions is to provide low-cost pertinent CPE to our members. 4

6 Other CPE Opportunities in Virginia 27th Annual Williamsburg Fraud Examiners Conference April at the Doubletree by Hilton in Williamsburg, VA The 27th Annual Williamsburg Fraud Examiners Conference is hosted by the Tidewater Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). Presentations feature a wide array of trending fraud topics. Up to 16 CPE s available. Early bird registration $425 or $250 per day or attend on- line for $350 or $200 per day. For more information contact the conference website : VLGAA Spring Conference Join the Virginia Local Government Auditors Association (VLGAA) in beautiful Virginia Beach, VA at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Friday May 11, 2018 for the VLGAA Spring Conference (up to 8 CPE). The event will be held at is informative, yet fun-filled, conference will cover a variety of auditing topics. All VLGAA, IIA Members, and guests are welcome. 7 CPE REQUIREMENTS HAVE CHANGED! ETHICS TRAINING In 2018, two of your CPE/CPD credits must be earned in Ethics. While this was not a requirement for 2017, we recommend you begin planning now. The IIA currently provides Ethics for Internal Auditors, an OnDemand course that can help you obtain these CPE. The IIA will be adding additional ethics training options throughout 2018 and beyond. THE CIA EXAM IS ALSO CHANGING! To ensure that the exam s content remains current and valid, the IIA periodically conducts a CIA global job analysis study, whereby the IIA reaches out to candidates, certification holders, academics, experienced internal audit professionals, and other stakeholders around the world to determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities most relevant to today s internal audit professionals. The IIA conducted a global CIA job analysis study in early This study was the basis for the subject matter content changing to reflect the current audit environment. I joined the SWVA Chapter as a student at VT around 1989 Where did you go to high school? I grew up on a farm in Russel County, just outside the town limits of Lebanon Virginia, where I attended Lebanon High School. Nearest civilization was Abingdon, where we sold our livestock and tobacco. Bristol was about 50 minutes away and was where I d take a date for a movie. What is your favorite TV Show? It s a close call between Big Bang and Modern Family. I watch the reruns when I have a few minutes. Saturday nights usually involve watching Ghost Adventurers, which is on the Travel channel. It s nice to watch people who are more clueless than yourself. To balance things out, I frequently listen to NPR and TED talks. What is your dream vacation? Driving across the US in an open-air vehicle, visiting any place or site that catches my eye and staying as long as I like. Name one person (dead or living) you would like to meet? Being a local government guy, I d enjoy meeting any number of great Mayors. Michael Bloomberg (NY) or Tom Menino (Boston) would both be interesting. What talent would you most like to have? I would be happy if I had any talent. I have a Guitar for Dummies book but haven t read past the first chapter. What is your prized possession? Used to be my hair, now I m just hoping to hold onto my sanity. What is your greatest accomplishment? Time will tell; I m trying my best everyday so I ll have a good answer at the end. What's a pet peeve of yours? That fear has once again supplanted hope in the world. What would you like to get around to doing when you have time? Hiking the Appalachian Trail. What is something most people don't know about you? I hardly use social media at all so that people don t know anything about me, and I d like to keep it that way. 8
