2 A message from the Governor.. Greetings Big Pine Key Moose Members, This past month we suffered a sad loss with the passing of our Brother Clark Stump Terry in a motorcycle accident. A Tribute of Service Ceremony was held on August 25th at the request of the family. I would venture to guess that over 300 people attended this service. It took quite a bit of work on a number of member s parts to put this service together in a short amount of time to make it the best we could to honor our fallen brother. What was immediately noticeable is how well our Lodge and Chapter came together to make this event happen. I would like to recognize and thank all of our members who came together and gave it their all to make this special for the family. Notably, Artie P, Ellen and Jamie cleaned up and removed all the accumulated items in the back room during the week and made it look great. JoJo worked her magic in making sure the room was clean. Steve M. and Tom D., along with Josh, Eddie and Kevin, added more tents to the Tiki to handle the expected crowd as well as Tom and Steve working their tails off serving at the Tiki. Jim barbacked all day long for them. Jeffers came in early Saturday morning and patched the ceilings from where we had some leaks at the AC units. Ellen got the flowers and arranged for the additional ice that was donated by Winn Dixie. Sandy searched for and found a Bible to present to Hana. JoJo ran to Marathon at the last minute to get a guest register book. Grace and Sandy rocked it behind the bar all day long and put our Administrator Bill to work getting change every 20 minutes or so. Paul who played music and donated all tips to Hana. Jaime, Ellen, Teresa, Jean, Carrie, Maureen, Marcia and Becky and crew handled the massive amount of food that was brought in including help from Eileen (West Dade Lodge) who was visiting that weekend. Kimmie making black armbands for the Ritual Staf at the last minute. The Ritual Staff consisting of Jim Stockton, Steve Mauriello, Keith Delano and Bill Lechnar did a fantastic job with the Tribute of Service. There are many, many more that I may have missed calling out specifically or overlooked having taken care of a specific task that stepped up and lent a hand, anytime there was need. If I missed you I apologize but you know who you are and Thank You. The Lodge and Chapter worked harmoniously to achieve a common goal and not once did I hear any mention questioning as to whether this was a Men s or Women s function. The men and women worked together unreservedly in order to achieve a common goal for our Brother and his Family in their time of need. Stump was a consistent volunteer over the years and never questioned whose function it was, he just stepped up anytime there was a need for whomever needed it. His example was followed by all for his service and should be an example for all of us moving forward. I see no reason that this mutual respect and rapport should not be the norm every day in our Lodge and Chapter. You, our members, have proven that it is possible. As Moose members we, meaning the LOOM and WOTM membership, have common goals in promoting the Mission of the Moose, Support for Mooseheart and Moosehaven, Community Service here in our hometown, Support for our Lodge and Chapter, and the objective of having a great time while accomplishing our mutual goals. The question should not be who we are helping but how can I help accomplish the task at hand. There is no truer statement than a task born by many is a burden to none and does it really matter who is hosting the function after all. For me, as a member first and also as your Governor, I am just thankful that we are having consistent functions and for those Men and Women that step up to do them. Thank you to all who volunteer. The Volunteer Men and Women of Big Pine Key Lodge 1585 and Chapter 1810 are awesome. Please remember to give them a hand when you see a need and thank them for the numerous hours they take out of their personal lives to make our Moose home a better place for everyone. I am blessed to have met so many caring and loving people and will miss you all. Thank you for our going away gathering. Dirk and I had a fantastic time with lots of laughs and tears. I love my earrings, they will always have a special meaning every time I wear them. As I travel on to my new home I hope a little of my love for Mooseheart and Moosehaven has entered into your hearts and you will share it with others. Love to you all, Babs and Dirk Labor Day Weekend September 1, 2, 3 Labor Day is the day that honors American working men and women all across our great nation. It is meant to be a time of rest and relaxation and a respite from the toil of day to day labors. So, put away the To-Do lists and join us at the Lodge for an afternoon in the Social Quarters or at the TIKI. We ll have sports on the big screens, munchies and all of your favorite beverages to help you enjoy the weekend. A Happy Moose Rests On Labor Day FBMA Annual Convention September 6-9 Rosen Plaza Hotel - Orlando LOOM and WOTM members from around the state and Bermuda will convene to share information and ideas of interest. NFL Football Is Back Starting September 6 with the Eagles vs. Falcons. We ll have all the games all season on the Big Screens. Join us at the Lodge for all the great NFL action and enjoy the games 3

4 My family wants a back to nature vacation experience but with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, room service and a 52 inch television. The Big Pine Key Moose Lodge 1585 proudly supports Moose Charities. Remember our Children at Mooseheart and our Seniors at Moosehaven that are in our care throughout the year. And the winner is.. 5 A look at the numbers A question was recently asked about the number of people that visit our Lodge website. Checking usage statistics for the month of August the numbers are: People using a smart phone or other mobile device 193 People using a computer 349 Total visits during the month of August 542 LOOM General Membership Meeting September 25 All members are welcome. Lodge Meeting Dates and Times LOOM Officers meetings: September 4, 18 WOTM Chapter meetings: September 5, 19 LOOM and WOTM joint meeting: September 18 District Meeting: Marathon - September 16 LOOM Lodge and WOTM Chapter meetings start at 6:00 p.m. District Meetings start at 1:00 p.m. Mrs. Moose Recipe of the Month Smokey Grilled Pork Chops 4 bone-in pork chops 3/4 inch thick 2 teaspoons Lawry s seasoned salt 1 tablespoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion power 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke Pre heat the BBQ for medium heat. In a bowl, mix the seasoned salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Worcestershire and liquid smoke. Rinse the chops and sprinkle the wet chops with spice mixture rubbing the spices into the meat. Let stand 10 minutes. Grill about 5 minutes per side. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Mrs. Moose serves the chops with creamed corn. 5

6 Wednesday September 12 th Moose Riders Organizational Meeting An organizational meeting will be held on Wednesday September 12 th at 6 PM to determine interest in starting a Moose Riders Activity Group at the Big Pine Key Moose. Membership and Officers positions are open to both men and women who are active members of the Moose. The Lodge Board of Officers has approved the formation of a Moose Riders Group and the next step is to determine interest, nominate and elect officers and then submit our request to form a Moose Riders Chapter at Big Pine Key to Moose International. Ownership of a motorcycle is not required as the group will need support personnel as well. Please plan on attending. The Moose Rider Activity Group promises to be a way to meet new people and have a blast. Moose Riders definitely have fun. Let s get this Chapter started and become a destination Lodge for Moose Riders all over the State of Florida. 6
