1 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE OCTOBER 2015 PROGRAM October Breast Cancer Awarness Month Have you had your Mammogram? Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates. The goal of breast cancer awareness campaigns (Brest Cancer Awareness Month) is to raise the public's "brand awareness" for breast cancer, its detection, its treatment, and the need for a reliable, permanent cure. Increased awareness has increased the number of women receiving mammograms, the number of breast cancers detected, and the number of women receiving biopsies. Overall, as a result of awareness, breast cancers are being detected at an earlier, more treatable stage. Awareness efforts have successfully utilized marketing approaches to reduce the stigma associated with the disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States (other than skin cancer). But millions of women are surviving the disease thanks in part to early detection and improvements in treatment. Mammograms increase the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable. This month to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness our guest speakers are from Sonora Regional Medical Center s Breast Health Center. Karen Hendrix, Diagnostic Technician and Barbara Conklin, Nurse Navigator Team. They will talk to us about Breast Health and Awareness. They are full time employees of the Breast Health Program which is located at the hospital. Karen does diagnostic testing and Barbara assists her and helps patients navigate through the program. She is in sorts the person who holds your hand through the process. Location: Peppery Gar & Brill Mono Way, Sonora Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2015 Networking: 11:00 AM Meal: 11:40 AM Lunch Meeting Cost: $20 Reservation Deadline: Midnight Sunday October 18 Plated Meal Options: PLEASE CALL THE RESERVATION LINE FOR DETAILS AND TO PLACE YOUR MEAL REQUEST Reservation Line: TCWN members and guests are required to make reservations or cancellations by phone-by the deadline. NO SHOWS of members or their guests will be charged a $25.00 CANCELLATION FEE. DROP-INS may attend, based on availability. Members are responsible for their guests attendance. Our annual scholarship fundraiser on September 19th was held at Black Oak Casino Resort Hotel. Thank you Teri Brockmire and the Gala Committee for a beautiful night. Also a big thank you to our sponsors, Black Oak Casino, Blue Mountain Minerals, Cutler Segerstrom Insurance, Sonora Regional Medical Center and Let s Go Travel without them this event wouldn t have happened. Everyone who donated their time or a silent auction item is very much appreciated. Josh Pfeiffer was wonderful, and Melody s meal from Seven Sister s Catering was excellent. We all enjoyed Tori James and her great sense of humor. She kept the auction going and made it a lot of fun. Congratulations to our costume contest winners and to everyone who was able to take home a great silent auction gift. I was hoping to outbid everyone for the Napa wine train trip but someone else will be enjoying a beautiful day and overnight stay. We have three more fun and interesting meetings to go before the end of the year and I hope to see as many of our members as possible. We also have a member appreciation night coming up. More on that to follow. Please be thinking about being an active member of the group next year. We will need committee members and I know many of you have great ideas and talents to contribute to the group. Bring someone to the October meeting who would like to join us next year. I know you all have friends who would be a terrific asset to our membership. I teach art for Community Education, and hope to inspire students to discover their inner creativity; it s good for the soul. Starting my business this year as a Health Coach with Take Shape for Life, I feel as though I m able to achieve all my dreams. My program is about total well-being: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, and Healthy Finances. The joy that comes seeing people regain their health is priceless. I m partnering with enthusiastic coaches on my team who also guide clients on their path to Optimal Health This amazing program has changed my life! I ve lost over 70 pounds and feel great, with renewed energy and enthusiasm for life! I feel obliged to pay it forward and help others achieve success as well. I enjoy traveling with my family, great movies, archery, and serving our community. As a family, we ve volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America for many years, teaching scouts good character through correct principles and practical skills. Living in the Mother Lode is delightful! It s so renewing to be in the mountains, where we have the friendliest neighbors! The most inspiring women in the world are right here in Tuolumne County! I so admire the talents and extraordinary Women Entrepreneurs in our organization and look forward to creating lasting friendships. 5 My name is Michelle Tuttle and I have been a member of the Tuolumne County Women's Network for 23 years! Not too many of us are left but there are a few. I have 18 years of escrow experience working my way up the ladder at Yosemite Title, beginning as a typist and eventually becoming the Vice President / Escrow Manager. I am currently working for myself as a Foreclosure Agent. Between my husband and me, we have been handling foreclosures for over 22 years. I grew up in Santa Clara with my parents and 3 sisters. In 1985 I moved to Sonora. Most of you know my wonderful husband, Michael, and my daughters, Becky, Angela & Stephanie. They have all been involved with the Network pitching in with all the things I volunteer to do! Michael and I try to travel as much as possible. We have a timeshare in Kauai that we go to every year and we recently bought a new motor home. You can often find us on the road heading to the beach! Retirement is getting closer and we are enjoying every minute of it. We also have a number of rental properties so we stay pretty busy managing those. If you are ever in need of a rental please do not hesitate to contact me. The Network has served me both professionally and personally, rewarding me with wonderful friends. I have held just about every position on the TCWN Board of Directors and would strongly suggest that you give it a try if you haven't already. Go Giants! Michelle Member Spotlight Michelle Tuttle
