1 Sun City West Pickleball Club Membership Meeting Minutes 5:30pm February 9, 2016 President: Donna Maloney Welcome and Call to Order Approval of minutes: previous meeting January 12, 2016 as posted on Club website (Click here for minutes) Approve and passed Ken Holtz Sponsor Introduction and Thank You. Ken discussed Frank Lightle s great contribution to our sponsorship program. He started the effort to have sponsors part of our growth and supporting our club. Alliance for Business and Community (ABC) and Pickleball Club representatives presented a check for $14, to North County Fire District and SCW Foundation. The funds will be split in half for the 2 charities. $4,600 in prizes were given to attendees of the event. Ken proposed the date of 1/21/17 for the 3 rd Annual Day for Charity. The proposal was unanimously passed by the membership. FITS Song - Carol Chesney as lead singer with Sherry and Bill Houck as back-up dancers. Thank you, Sherry for writing such a great song and thanks to all three of you for the great entertainment! 2 The Club Championship, Jim Elliot and Bruce Wray of the PBall Skills+ program are coordinating the event. Barb Zeman created a logo for the Tournament. The sign up deadline has been extended for registration to 3 pm on Tuesday 2/17 for Men s tournament and to 2/20 for the Women s tournament. You can register online or on the bulletin board at Liberty Courts. Crowded Courts The 2014, 2015 & 2016 Winter Weekly Program Schedules have been the same. In 2014 our membership was 836, in , and today over 1200! Needless to say, we are experiencing some growing pains. Additional court needs for set-up etc. will be communicated in our Club Newsletter. - Happy Camp Tuesday, March 22 & 29; 10:00 11:00 am courts Thank you Mary Peddle and volunteers for leading this event! Court Reservation Procedure Courts may be reserved 24 hours in advance by contacting the Tower at Reservation sheets are delivered to Palm Ridge mid-morning and posted on the bulletin board. If courts are available, you may write your name on the reservation sheet. Each member may reserve one court. Taking Turns - Drop In If all courts are full, please take turns with those waiting to play.

5 - Programs - Specific courts are scheduled for each program, however attendance may vary from week to week. If a scheduled court is not needed and therefore empty, anyone may play here. However, if additional program participants arrive, they will have priority. Please finish your game and then move to another court. - A different time? - We are all creatures of habit, however courts are crowded during peak times of the day - some might want to consider playing at a different time. Board members are doing their best to address club growth. We appreciate your patience and cooperation. Let s exemplify the following quote from Robert Fulghum s book All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten Share, Take Turns, & Be Nice!!! Jim Vermeer absent due to illness. Items will be discussed at next meeting. Safety Incident Report Form Pickleball rule New Business: Ken Holtz Tennis and Pickleball at Johnson Courts Update Tennis has requested that the Rec Center Assoc. build one tennis court on the existing 3 pickleball courts and one platform tennis court at RH Johnson. This request went to the Properties Committee and they voted to forward the proposal with a vote to support the request. Next steps Governing Board workshop (Friday 12 th 9:00 at Summit Hall) with public comments allowed Governing Board meeting for a vote on Feb. 25 th 9:00. A committee has been formed to develop ideas to support the idea of increasing rather than decreasing the ability for pickleball players to have the necessary space and present these issues to the Governing Board. Mike Whiting (general manager for the Association) wants a positive decision. He has stated that he is looking for a good long term solution. He suggested that the company currently working on the Johnson Pool renovation be asked to evaluate the situation between tennis and pickleball and to make suggestions about how to deal with our growth in membership. This is a matter of economic development in this community.

6 To bring this company in for the evaluation would mean that the situation would not move forward at the Johnson courts until the evaluation was done. Ken asked members to consider writing a letter to the editor, a Governing Board member or to stand and tell their story about pickleball. Discussion by the membership. Questions and answers. Donna M. Donna asked for each of us to share a caring and understanding attitude toward the two great sports tennis and pickleball. Bag hangers proposal made for the courts and going up at Libery Courts Survey on hold until other things settle down Bulletin Board will be up for FITS Judi and Frank Sama will be doing the painting. Judi will design the boards for better membership communication. GeoPavers won t be completed for FITS but will be soon after. FITS registration for play is down for our own club members. Highest levels are very low for registrations.
