It is a pleasure to welcome you all to our October newsletter. I hope that you are all well and are starting to wrap up now it is becoming a little chillier outside. I was away last week for a fantastic holiday in Weymouth and visited Monkey World and the world s only Swannary. I have printed some photos in this newsletter for you to see. We have our third resident and relatives meeting on the 12 th October at 2:30 so if you have any questions or suggestions for the meeting please feel free to give them to me before the meeting or during. Adriana and I attended a conference this month looking at how we as a home can make ourselves unique and we know that with your support and feedback we can achieve this. You will see from time to time feedback cards in the dining areas or maybe on your tray to ask for feedback about our menu. We would greatly appreciate your comments and if you need any support in filling it in then please ask a member of staff who will be happy to support. We have lots going on this month and the staff are busy planning for our fabulous fire work night where we are going to serve hot dogs and burgers, tea, coffee and hot chocolate with all those little extras. Then we will be moving quickly on to getting Christmas ready and planning the parties and events that we are getting booked for over the holiday. Have a fantastic October. October 9, Uganda achieved independence after nearly 70 years of British rule. Birthday - Italian opera composer Giuseppi Verdi ( ) was born in Le Roncole, Italy. His 26 operas include; Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata and Aida, and are among the most popular of all classical music performed today. October 26, Winston Churchill became Britain's prime minister for a second time, following his Conservative Party's narrow victory in general elections. In his first term from he had guided Britain through its struggle. Autumn Jokes What do you get when you drop a pumpkin? Squash. Why do birds fly south in the Fall? Because it s too far to walk. Why is Dracula so easy to fool? Because he s a sucker. Who won the skeleton beauty contest? No body. Employee of the Month Congratulations to our Kitchen. They have all been awarded employee of the month for their hard work, dedication. The food is outstanding as described by one resident. The hosts always help cut up my food, talk to me, laugh with me and are all polite and helpful from another! Well done Team and thank you for all your hard work. A fact about Somerset Did you know that Cheddar Cheese was discovered 800 years ago by accident? A milk maid allowed a pail of milk to go bad whilst being stored in the caves at Cheddar and the result was the world famous cheese. The constant temperature of 7 degrees was perfect for the cheddar to mature. Did you know that Cheddar Gorge is the largest Gorge in Britain at 500 feet.

Meet the team This month we would like to tell you some facts about Tina: Tina has two grown up children Has worked at The Manor for 19 years Her favourite dessert apple crumble and custard In her spare time Tina spends it with her Sprolley dog, Lola and goes for long walks followed by a visit to her local pub You said We did Thank you to all the residents who have made suggestions on how we improve the care that we give. Below is some of the feedback and things you would like to see happen. Don t forget to check out our board at reception for more details. Feel free to pop in and see Tina whenever you feel like it We are now looking in to purchasing a therapy bike for the residents to use with the therapy team We are going to be having fireworks again this year on the 4 th November We are looking at the activities we provide and are planning on more trips out Please do keep your feedback coming.

We received lots of outstanding entries and read many heart-warming accounts of excellent care. Thank you to everyone who nominated somebody for an award!

5 Specialised frame helps man to stand again A 1,000 grant from Barchester s Charitable Foundation has helped fund a new standing frame for a man living with cerebral palsy, which has had a dramatic effect on his health. David Cook, aged 28, who lives in Alvechurch, was suffering with increasing health problems because it was very difficult for him to get up from his chair, but since the purchase of a specialised standing frame, David s father says these problems have been quickly disappearing. Being able to stand strengthens David s muscles and improves circulation, helping to alleviate many of the problems he was experiencing before. It is making it easier for him to continue living independently, with support from live-in carers. Residents & Relatives Surveys The residents and relatives survey give residents and their family members the chance to give us feedback about the care you or your loved one receives. Your opinion really matters to us and it allows Barchester to make any necessary changes to our services so that we can continue to deliver the highest possible standard of care. Thank you to everyone who has completed the residents survey or who has assisted someone with filling it out. All surveys will need to be completed and sent back to us by the end of October. The relatives survey will be sent out in September.
