1 Volume 9 Issue 6 June 2001 Annual Scavenger Hunt!!! Instead of our June meeting, we are having a SCAVENGER HUNT. Just shoot a roll of slide film on your own. Your challenge is to capture the following six categories: Communication Green Ground Level Humor Summer Celebration Wet Have your film processed and bring your best slide of each category to the July meeting. Be sure to identify the slide with the category and your name. Our program will consist of the slide show and critique. Unfortunately, the club will not supply film or processing but prizes will be awarded in all categories. We hope all members will participate in this opportunity to share work and ideas. This year s Scavenger Hunt should be extra fun because we are all taking pictures of our own environments. There is no set place to go and shoot. This will make for a diverse set of shots.

2 Page 2 Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs Listen to Lisa! Hello... The most important thing I have to say is...there is No Meeting on Monday! I just want to make sure that nobody shows up and waits around for us. Remember, we decided to postpone this meeting and have a Scavenger Hunt instead. This year s Scavenger Hunt should be extra fun because we are all taking pictures of our own environments. There is no set place to go and shoot. This will make for a diverse set of shots. It is going to be extremely interesting to see what people s ideas are for each of the categories. The Arts Festival turned out nicely. The children s show was amazing. I was thrilled with the creativity of the photographs. They looked so proud receiving their awards. It s so nice to see them feel excited about their work now, so that as they grow older they will have confidence in what they shoot. I realized that weekend just how important my photographs are to me, and I have the scars to prove it. I was walking with a skirt on to drop off my pictures. I had four photographs wrapped up in big blankets balancing on both of my arms in front of my face so that I could barely see. I was almost to the steps of the building when I realized that I was going to fall. I knew that I had a decision to make; sacrifice my photographs or my body. I chose my body... and fell to the ground still holding the photos in the air. I then proceeded to stand back up without the use of my arms and walk into the building. Some of you were there to witness the aftermath. I must say that I now realize how dedicated I am to my pictures... Enjoy the beginning of your summer and I will see you in July with your slides in hand... Won t See You Monday! Lisa

Topics discussed: December Show In order to continue to give the generous prizes we have awarded in the past, we need all members to participate in the December show with either entries and/or patrons. If each member can bring in one or more patrons, it will greatly help the club maintain this wonderful contest and exhibit. Please begin thinking now about asking area businesses to be patrons. Program ideas We discussed the general themes of our programs which range from guest speakers to clinics to photo shoots. Maybe education is an area to work on. We will continue to discuss needs at the committee meetings. Meetings generally last one hour. All members are welcome. Please plan to attend.

4 Page 4 Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs News From the North Country The July 10th meeting of The Grand Canyon Photography Club will feature three members who are also professional photographers in a panel discussion on the topic "Taking Better People Photographs." Panelists are: Bruce Dart, a photographer from Mansfield, who will chair the discussion; Mark Bixby, photographer from Wellsboro; and Andy Lychalk of Galeton. These three photographers take professional photos of special family events, such as weddings, anniversaries, graduation and career advancement. In one meeting session, they can't share ALL their professional "secrets," but they can share how they can encourage subjects to be natural in their expression, how to make people look their best, how to work with individuals or groups, and how to deal with various lighting situations. Bring questions and be prepared for a fastpaced panel of experts from The Grand Canyon Photography Club help us to get that best shot of a backyard barbecue, a family reunion or just our kids at play. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. o Tuesday, July 10th at The Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center, 134 Main Street, between The First Presbyterian Church (corner of Norris Street) and The Green Free Library. IN OTHER NEWS: The Grand Canyon Photo Club Picnic will be Tuesday, June 26th at 6 p.m., at Ives Run, Hammond Lake, ten miles north of Wellsboro off Route 287, at Lakeside Pavilion, the last Pavilion on the left by the water. Members and guests and those with an interest in joining the club are invited to attend. Bring your cameras and film for a "Photo Scavenger Hunt" around the Lake and a chance to shoot sunsets. Also bring a dish to pass, a serving spoon or fork and utensils for yourself and guests. It's a good idea to bring extra chairs to supplement picnic benches. DO NOT bring pets or Alcohol. Wayne demonstrated the use of a proportion scale. Program Report: Arts Festival children s photography contest will be Arts Festival judged Tuesday May 22 6:60 p.m. Mindy, Stephanie, and Kathy will judge. Hanging of the Arts Festival exhibit will be Friday, June 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 at Penn College. We have 45 easels and will need help. Exhibit is Sat. June and Sun. June Pick up 5-6 p.m. Sunday Members Show Publicity: Our exhibit at the museum comes down Sat. May 26. Pickup Fri. before 4 p.m. or Sat Thank you Lou for nice article in the Sun Gazette about our show & also followup article after the show. Thank you Megan for agreeing to take over the club s publicity. We appreciate it! News: Board of Governors thanked the club for hanging hardware at the museum. Mindy is looking for a member to attend the Arts Council monthly meetings. They are held from noon to 1 p.m. the third Wed. of each month in the Arts Council office at the Community Arts Center. 6 Page 6 Ray Ovelman s Website of the Month I checked out this site as Ray told me it had a review of the new Nikon 995. I found the site very interesting. It is an on line newsletter which you can subscribe to for free. I particulary liked the number of articles featuring scenic spots on the East Coast. So often, magazines seem to be fixed on the West and South West. Check it out!
