Valley Volunteers join over a thousand other Walk With Me participants in the annual Sumner event More than 1300 people donned pink and marched in the Come Walk With Me event on October 6th in Sumner. The annual event is a community wide fundraiser in the fight to eliminate breast cancer. A number of GFWC VV members, along with their friends and family were there for the 3.1 mile walk starting at the Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse and going down Main Street to Windmill Gardens and returning to the Cannery. Participants were Dacotah Remington, Kim Skagen and friends, Pam Prasch and friends, Cindy Remington, Vicki Connor and Rita Loseth Cindy Remington and Vicki Connor had refreshments for all the walkers at the Ryan House Museum, courtesy of GFWC VV and the Sumner Historical Society Page 1

Valley Volunteers Meet & Greet other Volunteers!!! The Activity Center (Senior Center) by Pioneer Park in Puyallup was a busy place on October 2oth. The occasion was the the annual Volunteer Fair where the GFWC VV table had a premium spot right at the entrance to the event. Your STAR shines This was a great way for potential members to learn about GFWC Valley Volunteers and our projects and a fun way for our members to explore volunteer opportunities with other organizations and entities. Our table featured three story boards, our brochure and brochures for the Ryan House Museum along with a notebook of our state and club newsletters and awards won by our club in There was also a GFWC VV slide show running continuously on our table during the Our thanks to Linda Arnold, JuJu Slater and Joanne Jorgensen for working the table during the event and to Rita and booster Dale for help with the setup and breakdown. The GFWC VV Treat Yourself Basket was the star of the event as a number of prizes were given away at the Volunteer Fair. Shown here is JuJu with Sally the happy winner! Joanne Jorgensen worked double duty during the event. She was at the Oldfield Center table (shown here) and at the Valley Volunteers table. Page 2

Where the treats went! 1067 treats handed out! A portion of our October meeting time was spent getting stickers on pretzel treat bags for the Ryan House Museum, We thought you would enjoy seeing where they went. We can t show you all the little hands the 1050 bags ended up in... but here are a few! A special thanks to Pam Prasch for helping with set up and take down! Sumner Literary Guild/ ESO The combined Literary Guild and ESO meeting was held October 30th at The Ryan House Museum. Shared reading experiences included The Kincaid Story and other pieces of history relative to the same time period in Sumner s history. The Guild contact from the Sumner library had sent a list of possible reading material and Marion added to that with material in the ESO program that centered on the Pacific Northwest. In attendance were GFWC members Vicki, Marion, Rita, Pam and from the Historical Society, Linda Sader. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join either/or both of these fun and educational clubs. Contact Vicki for Guild information or Marion for ESO information. Page 3

GFWC Peninsula District Fall Board Joeseppi s Italian Restaurant was the location of our Peninsula District Fall Board on October 20th. Valley Volunteers was well represented. Cindy, Vicki, Laura, Kim and Dacotah enjoyed the event and guest speaker Carline Garner who shared her experiences as National President. Table decorations and door prizes were right in the season with a Halloween theme! Witches Hats, Green Cats and the Wicked Witch of the West! Fisher House - JBLM The Fisher House mission is to provide service members and their families a comfortable, nurturing and secure environment while they receive medical care at Madigan Army Medical Center. The Fisher House Wish List The November, 2012 Wish list, if you have items, bring them to the meeting. Current Top 3 Needs: Magic Erasers 2. Garbage Bags (10 gallon) 3.Oatmeal Find the Fisher House on Facebook or learn more on their web site: GFWC Valley Volunteers helps support the Fisher House October s donation items delivered by Marion Hale and Joanne Jorgensen to the Fisher House Page 4

Wobble to Gobble, Saturday November 17th Kim Skagen let us know about this great walk and run event she will be in. Pass the word Valley Volunteers, the more the merrier! This Fun Run and Walk is a great way to support two GFWC programs: Home Life and Education. Participation helps fund the Auburn Riverside High School Raven Crew, a group of upperclassmen who work with ninth graders throughout the year, preparing them for high school and making their transition a positive and welcoming event. Plus, it s a fun way to get good, healthy exercise! There s still time to meet the preregistration deadline, which is November 7. The cost is $25. After that, the cost is $30. To get the registration download, go to: If you bring a can of food, you re contributing to a food bank! Remember for November! We will be providing a Thanksgiving food basket for a large family of 7 in the Helping Hands program. Please remember to bring your contribution to the November meeting. We already have the turkey, (thank you Linda)!, Other suggestions are: rolls, potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables, napkins, table cloth, etc. They would be extra grateful to receive a few extra groceries outside of the holiday so that they have enough food in the home while their children are home on a school break and maybe a couple of family board games.
