4 Course Descriptions THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010 PRE CONFERENCE COURSES 8:00 5:00 pm 9 CEHs One Day Shoulder Course Featuring: Rotator Cuff Syndrome This one day course will demonstrate how to be more innovative in your treatment planning, examine functional approaches to rehabilitation of the kinetic chains, and illustrate the benefits of incorporating evidence based approaches into your bag of treatment tools. Additionally, attendees will examine rotator cuff injuries that occur at different points in the human lifespan, as well as recommended treatment for each population. Course participants will explore protocols for pathology of the shoulder with hands-on lab sessions so they can return to their rehabilitation settings with applicable concepts and skills. Presenter: Terry Trundle, PTA, ATC, LAT 8:00 5:00 pm 9 CEHs The Best Diagnostic Tests for Musculoskeletal Practice: A Critical Overview Physical therapists use hundreds of tests and measures during differential diagnosis for orthopedic conditions. Surprisingly, a number of these tests provide little value toward diagnosis. This lecture/ laboratory course dedicates 70% of the time toward motor learning of the best diagnostic tests and 30% of the time toward understanding the metrics of diagnosis. Only the best diagnostic tests with the least amount of bias are presented. Tests are discussed in terms of when in the examination and how the test performs (e.g., as a screen or as a confirmatory tool) as well. Presenter: Chad Cook, PT, PhD, MBA, OCS, FAAOMPT FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, :00 10:00 am 2 CEHs Keynote Presentation: Why Differential Diagnosis is an Essential Skill of a Physical Therapist All physical therapist differentially diagnose, regarding of their practice setting. Differential diagnosis is a process that involves ruling out sinister disorders, ruling in a diagnosis, and recognition of complicating elements that impede patient recovery. The optimal assessment process demands appropriate tool use, appropriate timing and interpretation of tests, and an understanding of the different forms of diagnoses. Presenter: Chad Cook, PT, PhD, MBA, OCS, FAAOMPT 2:00 5:00 pm 3 CEHs Evidence Approach to Functional Knee Rehabilitation This three hour course will identify the best functional exercises for our knee patients, discover how evidence-based practice research applies clinically to patients, demonstrate the use of progressive open and closed kinetic chain exercises for the lower extremities, examine the most common complications following ACL surgery, outline the development of a post-op core stabilization program and expand your hands-on mobility skills. Course content will include: functionality of the lower kinetic chain (knee), patella-femoral syndrome and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Presenter: Terry Trundle, PTA, ATC, LAT 2:00 5:00 pm 3 CEHs Objectifying Competitive Opportunity Have you considered the value of objectively defining and differentiating levels of market threat and opportunity to your business unit or practice? Do you understand the survivability of your business based on its economic value? How will objective identification of ubiquitous threats and opportunities surrounding the business practice contribute to efficient and successful operations? Learn to recognize the tools and information available for objective evaluation of your business. This is not a step-by-step instruction on how to run your business. This course will provide new perspectives to refine your approach through evaluating your position in the market place. Presenter: Judi Schack-Dugre, PT, DPT, MBA 4

Unfortunately, resources and opportunities for this population are limited. As a result of this need, a trial program, Play Your Way, was created through a collaboration between clinicians, volunteers, and community programs. This interactive multimedia session will present the state-of-the-art and science of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) by the World Health Organization (WHO). The presentation and discussion will cover basic knowledge of the ICF and its relevance to the clinical setting. A mini-workshop will be part of the session which will try to demonstrate and apply the ICF in patient evaluation and in monitoring outcomes. Presenter: Reuben Escorpizo, PT 5
6 Course Descriptions 4:00 6:00 pm 2 CEHs Therapeutic Exercise and the PTA: Understanding Dosing and Progression The course will provide a general overview to some of the more complex considerations surrounding exercise dosing and progression including: tissue specificity, the exercise dose-response curve; and monitoring for intended effect. Understanding of these considerations will assist the PTA in communication with the PT regarding modification of the plan of care and achieving better outcomes for patients. Upon completion of the course the learner will be able to: appreciate therapeutic exercise from a historical perspective; identify the intended functional qualities targeted by therapeutic exercise; describe the optimal stimulus for regeneration in specific biological tissues (articular cartilage, bone, intervertebral disc, and ligament/tendon); discuss the principles of therapeutic exercise dosing based on the Oddvar-Holten diagram; and identify clinical signs indicating need for exercise progression/regression. Presenters: : Raine Osborne PT, MSPT, OCS and M. Brian Hagist PT, MSPT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 Don t forget your APTA membership card and PT/PTA license number. The authors will present the methods for creating the Wii intervention booklet and clinical applications of the interventions contained in the booklet. The booklet contains ideas for using the Wii Sports and Wii Fit games that focus on the following impairments: range of motion, endurance, balance, and impairments common to the neurological population. Additionally, clinicians currently utilizing the Nintendo Wii in physical therapy practice will discuss how they utilize the popular game system and the clinical gains their patients have achieved from the incorporation of the Nintendo Wii into their plans of care. Presenters: Marissa Conrad, PT, Brenda Dorman, PTA, Jenny Shimada, DPT, and Tara Granada, DPT 9:00 12:00 pm Assessment of the Acute Polytrauma Patient A Systems Approach 3 CEHs The content will include a screening device for the acute polytrauma patient that integrates multiple systems to determine stability of the patient. A systems approach to examination will be used with emphasis on the most commonly effected systems including: cardiothoracic, abdominal compartment, neurological, integumentary and orthopedic. A review of common injuries to each area will be provided as well as monitoring devices and precautions. Finally integration of the exam information to prioritize patient problems, develop a plan of care and move the patient through the continuum of care will be discussed. Presenter: Jamie Dyson, PT 6
