Thrughut the curse we will examine the implicatins f psychlgical thery and research fr legal thery and fr a variety f plicies, prcedures, and practices within the legal system. The curse will draw n research in scial, cgnitive, and clinical psychlgy t examine evidence law (e.g., eyewitness testimny, plygraphy, expert testimny), prcedure (e.g., line-ups, trial cnduct, jury selectin, settlement negtiatins), and varius tpics in criminal law, trt law, antidiscriminatin law, family law, and ther areas. We will als address the cncepts f intent, respnsibility, deterrence, retributin, racial bias, and prcedural and distributive justice. REQUIREMENTS Sectin (20%) Sectin attendance and participatin will be cnsidered in grading. Yu are expected t attend and participate actively in all discussin sectin meetings and cmplete sectin assignments. If yu must miss a class meeting, please ntify yur GSI as sn as yu knw that and indicate the cause f yur absence. Unexcused absences will detract frm yur sectin grade. Yu shuld plan t attend the sectin fr which yu are registered. Paper (20%) An 8-page paper (duble-spaced) n a tpic f yur chsing cmbining psychlgy and law will be due n the first day f RRR week: December 9, 2013 (mre specific guidelines t be distributed later in the semester). GSIs will prvide feedback n tpics submitted t them via bspace n r befre Nvember 21, All papers shuld be submitted n bspace. We will be unable t accmmdate requests fr paper extensins. Exams (60% f ttal) One midterm (25%) will assess yur knwledge f curse material and will ask yu t analyze theretical and empirical facts, debates, and interpretatins cvered in the curse. It will emply a cmbinatin f multiple-chice, fill-in-the-blank r shrt answer, and shrt essay. The midterm will take place in the 8th week f the curse (Oct 17). Test questins may cme frm any aspect f the curse (e.g., lectures, vides, class activities, the textbk, and supplemental readings). The Final Exam (35%) will take place Wednesday, December 18, 2013 frm 8-11am. The final exam will include a "midterm" cvering mstly the secnd half f the curse plus ne cumulative essay questin giving yu the pprtunity t apply general knwledge gained in the curse. Sme material will naturally be relevant thrughut the curse, s the nn-essay sectin f the exam will nt be cmpletely nn-cumulative; hwever, it will fcus n material learned in the secnd half f the curse.
