4 As a result of this program, you will be able to: Identify geriatric clinical syndromes and treatment modalities Discuss significant social and economic trends affecting the care of older adults Recognize ethical, legal, and protective issues for older adults Develop innovative strategies for delivering health care and social services List special techiques and issues related to screening, assessment and intervention Distinguish therapeutic problems associated with common medical conditions of the elderly Explain drug therapy and chronic disease management appropriate for older adults Describe the complex issues of mental health in the older adult Evaluate diagnostic criteria to differentiate normal aging from disease Outline your knowledge of wellness, risk reduction and disease prevention in the elderly The certificate program for a multi-disciplinary audience provides up-to-date information about geriatric care and social issues affecting the well-being of older adults and their significant others. Recognized experts in geriatrics and gerontology will offer clinical, psychological, theoretical, social, legal and educational perspectives that focus on application. Attendance of five (5) of the six (6) sessions plus completion of special exercises (information about these simple tasks is given at the first session) is required to earn the Certificate in Professional Continuing Education in Geriatrics for Non-Physicians and the college credit. Earned CEU documentation will be provided to all participants for actual hours in attendance. Why a Certificate Program? National surveys indicate that the field of aging has become a distinctive career area, and gerontology is a full-fledged profession. The field of aging involves many types of practitioners, drawn from a wide variety of health, human service and allied fields. These practitioners realize more than anyone else that older people and their significant others are best served by providers who have aging-specific knowledge and skills. This professional continuing education certificate program provides practitioners with that knowledge and basic competencies in gerontology and geriatrics. Through the efforts and partnership of the collaborating entities, this certificate program offers an outstanding faculty to assure quality in both the content and presentations. This certificate program is unsurpassed in value. Continuing Education Credit Certificate of Professional Continuing Education and Certificate of Attendance will be issued for continuing education requirements that entitles the participant to obtain credit from his/her respective licensing or certifying agency or institution in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri. Three (3) semester credit hours will be provided at no additional cost.
