Biographical Sketch Deborah Nourse Lattimore was born on May 16, 1949, into an artistic family. She was raised by her grandparents, surrounded by art in their Beverly Hills home. She painted or drew with her grandmother every day after lunch, whether in the garden at their home or visiting an art museum. Starting at age four, whenever the prolific young artist ran out of paper, she drew on a wall in her house, hidden behind a large Mexican tapestry. At age fourteen, and later at age seventeen, Lattimore attended the Art College of Design in Los Angeles. She also attended UCLA, where she studied art, art history, archeology, and in graduate school, near Eastern studies. Lattimore worked as an artist for several companies over the years, while in her spare time she illustrated books, an interest of hers since the sixth grade. After unsuccessful attempts to establish herself professionally as an illustrator of books, she attended a class by children's book illustrator Diane Goode. She also studied writing for young people with children s book author Sue Alexander. Eventually receiving a contract with HarperCollins, Lattimore has illustrated numerous books, written by herself or by others. Her picture books often depict ancient cultures and their legends, a subject that has interested her for many years, and which allows her to use her background as a scholar, world traveler, and avid researcher to bring her work to life. Lattimore has two children, Nicholas and Isabel. She works in a small studio behind her home, using numerous techniques and mediums, such as watercolors, pencils, and inks. Besides writing and illustrating books for young readers, she also teaches at UCLA and at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Lattimore also teaches workshops on writing and illustrating books.
