2 3rd Annual EANS Young Neurosurgeons Meeting 2013 Thursday 4th April 2013 Guest Lecture - Dr Ruth Richardson GRAY S ANATOMY: A DOCUMENT OF ITS TIME We are pleased to welcome Dr Ruth Richardson to open our annual EANS young neurosurgeons' meeting on Thursday 4th April at The Royal College of Surgeons of England. Ruth is a fantastic medical historian and the author of 'The Making of Mr Gray's Anatomy'. Biography - Ruth Richardson I became interested in Gray's Anatomy when Elsevier commissioned me to write a new Introduction for the 2005 edition. I had been interviewed on a BBC Radio 4 series on the history of famous textbooks, and Professor Susan Standring (the current Editor of Gray's) had been interviewed for the same programme. She heard me speak when she listened to the finished transmission, and invited me to become a contributor. While I was doing the research for the Introduction, I realised that there was a real story to tell - the text had been in print for nearly 150 years, which was a remarkable achievement, that deserved attention. The immediate success of the first edition of 1858 cried out for explanation, and the very early death of Henry Gray added human tragedy. I have a background in graphics and literature as well as in the history of medicine, so the subject felt both intriguing and manageable, and as I researched I understood the crucially important role of the illustrations to the book's runaway success. This led me to examine the role of the curiously under-celebrated artist, Henry Vandyke Carter. The research became a book - The Making of Mr Gray's Anatomy, published by Oxford University Press for the 150th anniversary of Gray's Anatomy in Fellow of the Royal Historical Society Senior Visiting Research Fellow, Centre for Life Writing, King's College London Affiliated Scholar in the History & Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge Visiting Professor in Humanities & Medicine, Hong Kong University
