2 A ONE-DAY SYMPOSIUM DNA Damage Response and Repair in Radiation Therapy June 2013 Leksell Auditorium, T3 Karolinska Institutet Modern and future cancer treatment techniques, such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), of this mini-symposium is to examine recent development and progress in physics of low energy electrons and ions and in particular the prominent role these particles play in radiation biology and radi Organisers Hooshang Nikjoo, PhD, Professor, Radiation Biophysics Group, Dept. of Oncology-Pathology, Karolinska Institutet Rolf Lewensohn, MD, PhD, Professor, Dept. of Oncology-Pathology, Karolinska Institutet Thomas Walz, MD, PhD, MBA, Head of Department of Oncology, Karolinska University Hospital Participation is free but Registration is required by 1 June 2013 Send to hooshang.nikjoo@ki.se Interactions of radiation with human cell induce genomic instability, and DNA damage. What are the consequences of the damage to the cell and the organism in which it resides and perceived as an irreducible system? Radiation is a double edge sword, a harmful agent in need of protection against exposure, but on the other hand a tool vastly used to eradicate cancer. Use of ionising radiation in cancer treatment, and protection against its harmful effect requires a multi disciplinary approach including Medical Radiation Physics, and Molecular Radiation Biology. The perturbation introduced by radiation activates protective processes of the cell to restore the genome integrity. Advances in knowledge of DNA repair processes, cell signaling pathways, and human genome research have opened up unprecedented opportunities to develop bottom-up approaches to targeted cancer therapy. These approaches are aimed at linking induced DNA double-strand breaks through cellular DNA repair processes with deletions, duplications or other potential rearrangements that may ensue. The one-day symposium on DNA damage response and repair in radiation therapy and biology brings together some of the most active researchers in the field from basic research in experimental and theoretical approaches and clinic for discussion.
