2 Message frm Alberta Health Services Bard f Directrs Healthcare is a peple business and Alberta Health Services (AHS) alne cannt build a healthier prvince. Thrugh the wrk f ur Advisry Cuncils, all Albertans have an pprtunity t have a say in what we d at AHS; and that s vitally imprtant t ur rganizatin. Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn Cuncil members bring the vices f Albertans t AHS whether thrugh the gegraphically lcated Health Advisry Cuncils r the prgram-fcused Prvincial Advisry Cuncils and Wisdm Cuncil. They build relatinships with Albertans and keep the lines f cmmunicatin pen. They are ur partners, and their feedback has helped us make the right decisins n hw we care fr Albertans and hw we deliver health services. Their effrts cntinue t make a psitive difference in peple s lives every day. As Chair f the Cmmunity Engagement Cmmittee f the Bard, I ve had the pleasure t cnnect with many Cuncil members and see their wrk evlve and expand ver the past year. There are direct links between their effrts and the advancements we ve made as a health system verall, and in cmmunities acrss the prvince. Here are just a few examples: Cnnect Care - members ffered insights abut the system, and had pprtunities t jin three different cmmittees t help shape what the system wuld lk like. Zne healthcare planning - members participated in building Calgary and Central zne healthcare plans, and sharing specific needs fr the cmmunities they represent. PCN gvernance cmmittees - members have been invited t jin zne cmmittees. Cntinuing care - thrugh interviews, cuncil chairs prvided cmments and suggestins t help build cntinuing care plans and slutins in the znes. AHS Health Plan and Business Plan - members ffered perspectives and suggestins int the plan; their input shaped the gals, bjectives and perfrmance measures, particularly in the areas f lng term care and mental health. They als actively shared the plan with cmmunities acrss Alberta. Special engagement meetings fr Albertans - many f the Cuncils had the pprtunity t hst engagement activities frm Open Huses t frums t infrmatin sessins, bth in persn r by vide cnference. Other milestnes include adpting a new lk and brand, carefully develped wrk plans, and attending the Annual Advisry Cuncil Fall Frum t engage abut healthcare issues and cnnect with each ther. 3 Message frm the Chair The cmpsitin f the is unique amng Alberta Health Services (AHS) advisry cuncils. Cuncil cmprises a mixture f persns tuched by cancer and persns selected fr special expertise relevant t cancer. The frmer, hailing frm diverse cmmunities acrss Alberta, Tny Fields have experienced cancer, either persnally r thrugh clse family members. The latter, sme f whm are als cancer survivrs, have prfessinal training and experience in cancer services, r represent rganizatins that fcus n cancer. The principal mechanisms by which Cuncil ffers advice and cmment t AHS include: Prviding advice t AHS leaders thrugh discussin at cuncil meetings fllwing presentatins n key prgram issues; Individual Cuncil members participatin by appintment r invitatin t certain AHS cmmittees r planning meetings (e.g. membership n the Cre Cmmittee and sme wrking grups f the Cancer Strategic Clinical Netwrk (SCN)); Interacting with the Health Advisry Cuncils, the ther tw Prvincial Advisry Cuncils and the Wisdm Cuncil thrugh the Cuncil f Chairs and the annual Advisry Cuncil Fall Frum. This reprt illustrates the breadth f issues cnsidered by Cuncil during , as it interfaced with leadership f CancerCntrl Alberta, the Cancer SCN and the cancer preventin and screening leadership f Ppulatin, Public and Indigenus Health. Cuncil is determined t strengthen its interactins with the Health Advisry Cuncils, establishing a pipeline fr specific perspectives and cncerns f lcal cmmunities t reach ur Cuncil table fr cnsideratin; this will be a pririty fr the year and beynd. We had five new members appinted in March 2017, and they attended their first meetings in the fiscal year. Als, Ms. Barb O Neill, Senir Prvincial Directr, and Dr. Dug Stewart, Senir Medical Directr, f the Cancer SCN jined Cuncil as Permanent Resurce Persns twards the end f the year. I wuld als like t thank ur Permanent Resurce Persns, Ms. Nancy Guebert, Dr. Matthew Parliament and Dr. Huiming Yang, fr their faithful attendance and invaluable cntributins t ur wrk. Very special thanks t Ms. Laura Lee Clarke and Ms. Selene Snell fr their skillful and diligent administrative supprt f Cuncil activities. We implemented an evaluatin tl fr ur meetings t aid in evaluating perfrmance, and t enhance the value f the members vices and cmmitment t the cuncil and future cuncil meetings. 6
