1 Alan Shapiro Speaks at FNATS 2005 Short Course At FNATS 2005, Alan Shapiro joined Robert Bowden of Leu Gardens, Dr. Gary Knox of IFAS, and Alan Heinrich of Cherry Lake Tree Farm in presenting a program at the Short Course on "New Plants". In 2003, Alan was asked to give a presentation entitled "Finding your Niche as a Grower and Marketer". Alan Shapiro donates blood for the 72nd time Alan Shapiro was acknowledged in September 2005 as a 9-Galloneer by Life South/Civitan Regional Blood Center. Alan is carrying on a tradition of giving begun by his father, Samuel Wolfe Shapiro, who was a regular donor until the time of his death. Grandiflora has held a blood drive every two months for many years with an average of 10% participation each time the Bloodmobile comes to the nursery. Alan Shapiro Presents Program at PPA 2005 Symposium in Tennessee In July 2005, Alan spoke to a large audience in Knoxville Tennessee attending the Perennial Plant Association's Annual Symposium. His Powerpoint Presentation was entitled "The Challenges and Rewards of Growing Perennials in the South". Alan Shapiro Presents Two Programs at SNA 2004 Owner Alan Shapiro spoke twice at the SNA 2004 Trade Show, presenting a talk on "Vines for the Southeast" at the short course and speaking again on the World Stage about "Surprisingly Hardy Tropical-looking Perennials". Alan Shapiro Guest Speaker at 2004 International Symposium in Mexico Alan and Ellen Shapiro were flown to Cuernavaca Mexico to speak at an international horticultural symposium. Liliana Delgado of Bill Moore and Company also spoke and translated for Alan's talk on Vines in Florida.
2 SFN wins booth award at FNATS 2002 With the theme "Create a Picture Perfect Landscape", SFN won an award at FNATS for Outstanding Large Plant Booth. Framed in the picture are Mark Gruver, Alan Shapiro, and Pete Sommer in their artist outfits. Alan Shapiro presents talk at SC Trade Show 2002 Alan spoke on new and under-utilized perennials at the 2003 South Carolina Trade Show in Myrtle Beach. His Powerpoint slide presentation was well-received by a standing room only crowd. Alan Shapiro Moderates Session at IPPS 2001 in Houston, TX Alan Shapiro was moderator for the opening session of the 2001 International Plant Propagators Southern Region meeting in Houston, TX. Grandiflora (San Felasco Nurseries) Receives Praise for Perennial Field Day 2001 In stories in the Greenline and Ornamental Outlook Magazine, Grandiflora (San Felasco) was praised for putting on its Perennial Field Day in September. This annual event attracts growers and landscapers from all over the Southeast, offering educational sessions, plant and seed exchange opportunities, and nursery tours. Nationally known speakers present talks on various topics involving the propagation, growing of, and landscaping uses of perennial plants. Booth Award at SCHI (South Carolina Horticultural Industry) Trade Show San Felasco won an award for Best Large Plant Exhibit at the South Carolina Trade Show in Myrtle Beach in 2001
3 Booth Award at FNATS (Florida Nursery and Allied Trades Show) Grandiflora's (San Felasco Nurseries) displays at this Orlando Trade Show have won top honors as Best Large Plant Exhibit in 1998, 1999, and San Felasco Wins Ribbon at SNA 2001 Grandiflora/San Felasco won second place in the Large Plant Exhibit category at the Southern Nursery Association Trade Show in Atlanta GA in August with the theme "Our Plants are Survivors". San Felasco has won ribbons at SNA many times in the past with their innovative exhibits. KACB Millenium Award 2000 Alan and Ellen Shapiro won this major award in 2000 from Keep Alachua County Beautiful for helping make Alachua County a better place in which to live. Booth Award at Gulf Coast Expo (Alabama Nursery Association) Grandiflora/San Felasco won a booth award in 2000 at the Gulf States Hort Expo Wendell E. Butler Award 2000 Alan Shapiro was presented FNGA's highest award, the Wendell E. Butler Trophy, in 2000 "in appreciation for loyalty and service to the Nursery and Landscape Industry". As a recipient, Alan was allowed to keep the prize in the Grandiflora office for a full year until it was passed on to the next winner at the FNGA Annual Convention. Alachua County Commissioners' Challenge Recycling Award 1999 Grandiflora/San Felasco won this prestigious award in 1999 for its recycling efforts. SWANA Recycling Award 1999 After winning a community award for recycling in 1999, San Felasco was nominated by Alachua County and won a statewide award for recycling from SWANA. S.J. Blakely Award The Plant Shoppe, the retail branch of Grandiflora/San Felasco Nurseries, won the S.J.Blakely Award for the Outstanding Garden Center in Florida in 1993.
4 Gainesville City Beatification Board Bob Gasche Award 1995 Alan Shapiro won this coveted award from the Gainesville City Beatification Board in 1995 for his beautification efforts. The award is named after longtime former City Beautification Board chairman, Bob Gasche. Gainesville City Beautification Board Teeny Tripp Award 1989 Alan Shapiro won this award from the City Beautification Board in 1989 for outstanding community service. The award was named in honor of Mrs. Teeny Tripp, an active participant on many local boards. Grandiflora Wins Best of Show at SNA 2008 in Atlanta At the fall 2008 Southern Nursery Association trade show in Atlanta GA, Grandiflora took the Best of Show award for its island display. Incorporating rustic and antique furniture borrowed from Harmony Gardens retail nursery, a beautiful display occupying six spaces showcased the fall-blooming perennials and ornamental grasses of Grandiflora. Alan Shapiro Named FNGLA Floriculture Division Member of the Year At the FNGLA Annual Convention in Marco Island FL in June 2007, Alan Shapiro received an award for Floriculture Committee Member of the Year for his work on the Floriculture Field Day which takes place each May. IPPS Southern Region names Alan Shapiro Site Chairman for 2005 Annual Meeting in
5 Gainesville FL The International Plant Propagators Society Southern Region of North America held it's annual meeting in Gainesville FL in October Alan Shapiro headed the local Site Committee that organized and staged the event that was attended by over 250 participants. Besides lectures in the Hilton UF Conference Center's Ball Room, attendees had three half day tours of local nurseries and gardens.
