1 Issue # 37 7 April 2015 Meeting Proceeding Pres Corina called the meeting to order and reminded everyone that there will be no meeting on the 14 April Instead, all members are encouraged to attend the dinner with Rotarians from our sister club from KL Di-Raja on Friday 17th after the friendly golf game. Rtn Jochen Klauss welcomed the speaker and Rotarian Michael Clements from RC Melbourne, Australia. Rotarian Christopher toasted to RI and the Australian Rotary Club. Rotarian Clements shared about the work of his club, which has 300 members and doing annual projects in Timor Leste to help the poor people in the newly independent country. R o t a r y C l u b o f R a f f l e s C i t y Speaker: Mr T P Chan Surviving Marriott bombing in Jakarta" President Corina invited PE Sigrid, PP Ronald Pereira, PP Dr T C Phua, PP Aaran Tan and PP Eugene Lim to receive their 3 rd Quarter 100%er award. Keep it up! PP Ron Pereira updated members on the medical mission to Kota Kinabalu on 25 th April giving blankets to 150 children and elderly and inoculating 100 children with the pneumococcal vaccine to prevent pneumonia. Vincent is providing 100 pairs of spectacles for the adults who require them. Ron also reminded members to support the Career Symposium at the Tampines Junior College. All the 14 speakers have been lined up. Rotarian Dr Wan introduced TP Chan, our Guest Speaker and his staff Ellen Wong. Mr. Chan is an award winning businessman who specializes in laundry systems serving the hotel industries. He was in the Marriott Hotel Jakarta when the car bomb went off in 2004 killing a dozen people and injuring many more. Mr Chan suffered over 40% burns and literally struggled his way to get help. He was ferried by SOS to Singapore and went into a coma during surgery for 37 days. When he woke from coma he was told that his friends and family recorded and played messages for him to be awakened. He could recall some dreams about some church light because many prayed for him. He was told that President Megawati of Indonesia and President Nathan had visited him. He seemed to have dreamt that they waved at him but he was not sure whether that was to say goodbye or to welcome him back. Post coma recovery was very painful and difficult. It took 2 full years to learn to walk again. He continued with his laundry business and experienced much success and received social recognition. He felt that every day that he is alive is a gift to be treasured and to give back to community. He had since been able to return to Indonesia and visited the restaurant when the bomb went off. 2 His story was featured on Singapore TV and the recording by his friends and family was also aired. He still listened to them to remind himself of how far he has come. Mr Chan concluded his sharing with a video of the new technology he designed to reduce dependency on labour to increase productivity by severa-fold in the laundry business.
