Chartered 13 August 1980 Meeting: The Singapore Cricket Club, Every Tuesday 12.45pm RI Calendar / DECEMBER: Rotary Family Month Bulletin Issue 23 / Dec 2013 Annual General Meeting on 17 th Dec 2013 The meeting on 17 December was the Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Raffles City. 25 members attended. We had one guest who joined us during the lunch part of the meeting. Prior to AGM, the gathering enjoyed the delicious Christmas buffet put out by the Cricket Club which included turkey, ham, salads, pasta and Christmas log cake. President Jeffrey used the opportunity to request Charter President Siew Joon to present the certificates and pins to the most recent Major Donors and Paul Harris Fellows who were present. PP Vincent Chen was recognized and presented with his pins as a Second-tier Major Donor and AG Johnson Tan was recognized for being well on his way to the same. PHF certificates and pins were presented to new members Mark Chng and Geoff Hogg while PHF pins were presented to President Jeffrey (+2); VP Thomas (+6); and PE Corina (+1). The certificate and pin for Rtn Mohit and the PHF pins for PPJoseph Foo (+2), PP Rajaram (+2) will be presented later. PP Jimmy brought along 20 calendars produced by President Yap Kip Lee of the RC of Singapore who had presented these to the club to be sold to members with all proceeds to our Sunshine Box. These were enthusiastically taken up. This together with the generous contributions by members for other causes netted $312 for our Sunshine Box for this week. PP Eugene reminded everyone of the Club s annual golf tournament the next day, Wed 18 Dec. which is for the Charter President's Trophy. This will be followed by a fellowship dinner at the Seletar Restaurant where everyone is invited to join in. He also reminded about the Club's Annual Christmas party on Friday 20 December at the home of PP Koy Nam at Rochalie Drive. As of that time 53 Rotarians and family members had indicated their attendance.

President Jeffrey once again reminded members of the 2013 Rotary Family Day which will be held on 28 December from 10am at the MDIS Campus at Stirling Road. He stresses again that Rotary is not just about participating in club activities but also in participating in joint clubs, District as well as Rotary International activities. This is the way to engage and enjoy Rotary. This was the last club meeting for There will be no meetings on 24th and 31st December. Our first meeting for 2014 will be on 7 January where the President of the Singapore Cricket Club, Colonel Gurcharan Singh will be our guest speaker. Photos of meeting on 17 Dec 2013

President s Column PRESIDENT S BLOG Week of 16 DECEMBER 2013 Dear Members, This week is the last week of activities for our club for 2013 and what a week it has been. We have had the Charity Film Show on Monday, our AGM on Tuesday, our Annual Golf Competition on Wednesday, the Funky Christmas Dinner organised by the Joint Clubs on Thursday and our Club s Annual Christmas Party on Friday. Even though the Golf Competition was a wash-out, no thanks to the Sumatra that hit us in the mid-afternoon, this week must surely be a memorable one for the club. There are no more clubs meeting until the first week of But that does not mean that there are no activities for us till then. There is the Joint Presidents meeting on Sunday and the big one the Rotary Family Day on Sat 28 December. That event culminates the 2013 Rotary calendar for Singapore for will be another year. The year has been an extremely eventful one for all of us in our club and it will take too long to recall all that we did and enjoyed during this year. But if there is one thing that has stood out, it must be our fellowship. This has improved tremendously. To a large extent this must be because there is greater and more up to date information being flowed out to all members, thanks to - and to our very hardworking Bulletin Editor. If we want to recall just one or two more significant events, then I think we can pride ourselves in our growth. Not only have we had 4 new members from July this year but our newer members in fact are leading the way in many of our recent activities. We look forward to them taking leadership positions in our club. Of note also is our vocational service with our careers and other training symposiums for our young people which promise to continue into the New Year. December is Rotary Family month and it is right that we focus on our families during this time of joy and good tidings. As a club we have enjoyed our Christmas Party on Friday where so many of us attended with our families. It was truly heart-warming to see our young, children and grandchildren, enjoying themselves so much. We also celebrated Wei Shan and Gavin s wedding and welcomed Arthur and Valerie, Gavin s parents, into our time of fellowship. Weddings are always family occasions and so align well with our Rotary priorities and Rotary theme for this month. So let us all complete our Rotary Year by coming with our families and joining with all the other Rotarians and their families in the forthcoming Rotary Family Day. This is on Sat 28 Dec from 10 am at the MDIS campus at Stirling Road. Hope to see our all there to close our Rotary activities for this Rotary Year in true Rotary style. Jeffrey Chan President, R C of Raffles City

(Photo by Rtn Geoff Hogg) Visit to Red Cross Home for the Disabled We visited the Red Cross Home on 15th December 2013, to spread a little Christmas cheer to the volunteers and residents of the home. The following Rotarians were present at the event PP Aaron Tan, PP Wee Koon San, PP Ron Pereira, PP Vincent Chen, PP Low Cze Hong, PN Sigrid Zialcita and Rotarian Brian Tan. Our Rotaractors from the Rotaract Club of Raffles City as usual, coordinated the event with the Red Cross Home. Based on feedback from the staff we provided them with a bath towel as a token gift for each of the residents of the home. Incidentally, the cost of the 120 towels amounted to one-third of the $1500/= which was spent for the visit. Arrangements were made for daily provisions to be delivered to the home for the residents this coming week. Items include tooth paste, milk powder and other essentials that can be used in the coming months. This year we also had Rotaractors from the Rotaract Club of Ngee Ann Poly Technical and National University of Singapore who provided carollers as well as musicians for the carolling session. There were a total of 3 wards that we visited to sing Christmas Carols. Ward 5- men, ward 6- women and ward 7- children. It was a wonderful experience to see the smiles on the faces of some of the residents and the nurses and caregivers who were present at the wards during our carolling session. Some of the nurses even sang along with us during our carolling session.

Report by Rtn Brian Tan Charity Film Show The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 16 Dec 2013, Lido1 The Major Project of the Rotary Club of Raffles City was held on Monday 16 December This was the Charity Film Show in aid of the Simei Care Centre as the major beneficiary with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore and the Crohn and Colitis Society as the other beneficiaries. The film was "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" which was a prequel to The Lord of the Rings series. The venue was Lido 1 cinema which seats 500. All tickets were taken at donations of $50 per seat. However the theatre was only about 70% full, suggesting that many who took the tickets did not attend. DG Chew Ghim Bock and spouse Phyllis was unable to attend but was represented by PP Lim Peng Bun and his spouse Vanessa who came as personal guests of President Jeffrey. In his speech before the screening, President Jeffrey made a short speech. He informed the audience about Rotary and thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the evening possible. Special mention was made of DG

who contributed $2000 and gave the tickets back to the club for our youths and other stakeholders. He expressed the Club's thanks to Rtns Hua Min and Luis who underwrote the cost of the film, and also PP David Ong and PP Koon San, who made the arrangements for the event. Thanks were also expressed to Community Service Director PP Gerald Lim and his committee for identifying the beneficiaries and seeing to the logistics, including the distribution of the tickets. Thereafter at President Jeffrey s urging, the entire audience sat back to enjoy the most exciting 3-hour movie. 34 th Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Raffles City The 34th AGM of the Rotary Club of Raffles City was held on Tuesday 17 December 2013 at the Gilmour Room of the Singapore Cricket Club. About 25 members attended. As the agenda did not provide for any Secretary s Report or President s speech, President Jeffrey began by recalling the progress of the club since the commencement of this Rotary Year. Foremost was the improved communications with and among members, largely through the weekly issue of a revamped Club Bulletin which is informative and engaging. This was probably the major factor in the improved attendances at club meetings and other events. The fact that care was taken to ensure a good menu during our lunch meetings as well as having speakers at every meeting, whether guest speakers or members, also contributed to improved attendances. This meant better fellowship. Finally, this year saw our spouses being more active than previously with 2 events so far organised specially for spouses and others in the pipeline. There are areas where improvements can be made. Our communications to the public can be further improved and also we have been very lacking in our participation in Rotary events outside our club. These include Inter-City, Joint Clubs and District events. Our very minimal participation has been adversely commented on. President Jeffrey urged all members to participate in such events as it is through such events that we can widen the circle of Rotarians that we know and enhance our Rotary experience. Club Treasurer Ron Pereira reported that financially the club is in good stead and that there are sufficient funds for the club to move forward with its plans. The few members who are in arrears are expected to clear their arrears within a month. Then all members of the club will be in good standing. With this happy information, the club accounts were passed. Charter president Siew Joon was elected by acclamation to be the Returning Officer for the election of the Board of Directors. As in previous years, this was done on bloc. In the absence of any other nominations, the members nominated by President Elect Corina were declared as elected to the Board for the Rotary Year 2014/15. The Board is as follows: President Vice President Corina Lai Jaya Prakash
