1 Lunch Meeting November 7th, 26 Meeting was presided by Pres Sami Midani. We had a good turnout of 19 members & 11 guests / visitors no doubt attracted by the presence of 2 guest speakers namely Mr Kevin Shepherdson who spoke on Future of Information Technology and internationally renown motivational speaker Mr Shiv Khera. Our second speaker is incidentally the father of Rtn Bhavna Vedhara and helped blow the candle on this month s birthday cake celebrating the arrival of his grandson, Vir. Secretary Aaron Tan also featured in the celebration for his wedding anniversary in Nov. Both our guest speakers delivered highly interesting presentations which greatly enhanced the fine Rotary camaraderie of our regular lunch meeting. In addition we had visiting Rotaractor Alefiya Akbarally; President of Rotaract Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka addressed members and guests on her club & personal quests. We hope to replicate the fine atmosphere for next week s Joint Meeting with Rotary Club of Marina City. Chartered 13 August 198

8 The Guide to Daily Living Adopted for use by D331 Conferences 1999 & 21 Promoted for use in all clubs by D331 Conference 25 Submitted for consideration of the COL 27, endorsed by D331 Conference 25 The Guide to Daily Living Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the Guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them: First Second Third Fourth Have I spent some time in self-examination? Have I spent quality time with my family? Have I given the best to my work? Have I given some time to someone near and far? The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve. The second question reinforces our commitment to the family our intimate community of Life and Love The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high ethical standards. The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend A Hand, rendering compassionate service and working for world peace. The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary. The Four- Way Test: From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: Chartered 13 August 198
9 "Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?" Humour Time: Employee performance evaluations: For everyone who has ever had an evaluation - just remember it could have been worse. These are actual quotes taken from *government* employee performance evaluations. 1. "Since my last report, this employee has reached rock-bottom and has started to dig." 2. "I would not allow this employee to breed." 3. "When he opens his mouth, it seems that it is only to change feet." 4. "He sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them." 5. "This employee is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot." 6. "This employee should go far, and the sooner he starts the better." 7. "Got a full 6-pack, but lacks the plastic thingy to hold it all together." 8. "A gross ignoramus times worse than an ordinary ignoramus." 9. "He doesn't have ulcers, but he's a carrier." 1. "I would like to go hunting with him sometime." 11. "He brings a lot of joy whenever he leaves the room." 12. "When his IQ reaches 5, he should sell." 13. "A photographic memory but with the lens cover glued on." 14. "A prime candidate for natural de-selection." 15. "Donated his brain to science before he was done using it." 16. "He's got two brains cells, one is lost and the other is out looking for it." 17. "If he were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week." 18. "If you give him a penny for his thoughts, you'd get change." 19. "If you stand close enough to him, you can hear the ocean." 2. "It's hard to believe he beat out 1,, other sperm." 21. "One neuron short of a synapse." 22. "Some drink from the fountain of knowledge; he only gargled." 23. "Takes him 2 hours to watch 6-minutes." Words of Wisdom for Rotarians : Never underestimate the power of giving. It shines like a beacon throughout humanity. It cuts through the ocean that divides us and brightens the lives of all it touches. One of life s greatest laws is that you cannot hold a torch to light another s path without brightening your own.
