As part of Being Kind to Others, our students are learning about the importance of supporting families in need within our own community. Recently, we held a coat drive to help support families in our community who do not have the coats they need to stay warm when the freezing weather arrives. The response from our families was incredible. The organizers of the coat drive from St. Vincent de Paul sent us a Thank You letter to express their sincere appreciation for all that we did. Thank you Moraine Hills families for helping us to be kind to others! In addition to organizing donation opportunities throughout the year, St. Vincent de Paul provides emergency support of food and grocery gift cards to Oak Ridges/Northern Richmond Hill (north of Gamble) residents who are struggling financially. 2 Page 2 Progress Reports Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, November 20. Friday, November 23 is a P.A. Day. You will have the opportunity to discuss your children s progress during the evening of November 22nd or the morning of A Remembrance Day assembly will take place on Monday, November 12, at 10:30 a.m. for students in Grades 3 to 8 Please join us if you can. Inclement Weather As the cold weather approaches, it is timely to start thinking about inclement weather reminders. Being physically active during winter is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and recess is one opportunity for students to be active. Students need to come to school dressed to play outside during recesses. It is advisable for children to bring extra pants and socks in case they get wet. We keep a close eye on weather conditions, including wind chill. When conditions necessitate, students will remain inside for recess or sometimes go out for a shortened recess depending on conditions. In general, if students are well enough to attend school, they will be expected to go outside for outdoor recesses. We ask that parents be sensitive to the demands placed on our secretaries and not call the school to inquire about indoor recess, but rather send their children dressed for outdoor winter play. If poor driving conditions necessitate the cancellation of school bus services, local and Toronto radio and T.V. stations will broadcast the information. A message will also be available at Please remember: if buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not resume service during the day. Also please remember, bus cancellation does not mean that school is cancelled. Schools will be open; however, if you choose to bring your children to school on a day when buses are cancelled, you must also make arrangements to pick them up by 2:50 P.M. NOTE: if the buses are cancelled, ALL lunch programs are also cancelled. SEARCH AND SEIZURE According to the Y ork Regional Police/York Region District School Board protocol, school administrators have the right to search school property, such as lockers and desks, without notice or permission from any person.

3 MORAINE HILLS HIGHLIGHTS Page 3 SEVERE ALLERGY ALERT As you are aware, we have several students and staff members who have severe allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. We would like to remind you to refrain from sending any food items to school which contain (or may contain) nuts or nut by-products. We also ask that you do not send Sesame Products to school. Please make sure you check Hallowe en treats before sending anything to school for snack. For those who missed having their picture taken on October 10th or October12th, the photographers will be back on November 9th. THE SPORTS REPORT It has been a great month for Hawks Athletics. The Cross Country team performed exceptionally well at Areas and we had several runners qualify for Regionals at the Roc in Keswick. Congratulations to all our Cross Country athletes. The Intermediate Volleyball teams have been busy competing in tournaments, games, and practices. The Intermediate Boys Team hosted a competitive 5-Team tournament last week that went well into the evening. The Hawks ended up winning a thrilling championship game going all the way to Game 3, and winning it on the final point of the tournament. The Girls Team will be hosting their MHPS invitational on November 1st. The Junior Volleyball season has begun and is now in the try-out phase. Intermediate Basketball will be starting shortly after volleyball. GO HAWKS GO!

4 MORAINE HILLS P.S. SCHOOL COUNCIL We are very pleased to announce the executive for the School Council. Co-Chairs are: Padideh Fereidooni, Dani Guo, Tanya Lysko, Dimple Seghal and Monique Singer. Secretaries: Andrea Privetta and Alifiya Kanchwaa Treasurer: Rachna Prasad The School Council meets in the library at 6:30 p.m. in the school library on the first Monday of each month (excluding December and March). NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING: Monday, November 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the school library Among other things, we will be talking about future fundraising events and looking at our EQAO results. Please join us! The School Council provides an invaluable service to our students. Their fundraising efforts, including pizza lunches and the annual Dance-a-Thon make possible many items for the school. These purchases have included: SmartBoards and other technology and audio-visual equipment; field trips; in-class programs; sports jerseys; sound system and wireless headsets and microphones; the rights and venue for Beauty and the Beast musical; musical instruments; scoreboard for the gym; classroom fans; Welcome to Kindergarten bags; water filling sta- BE KIND TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS Our BE KIND TO YOURSELF committee is launching the PLAY Program at Moraine Hills P.S. The PLAY Program offers leadership training for students in Grade 5. The students will be trained to teach interactive and co-operative games to students in Grades 1 to 3 for recess play. The program has been designed to promote positive spaces for learning and playing by enriching student leadership skills, promoting inclusivity for all students on the playground, increasing physical activity opportunities and enhancing social skills and overall well-being. We are very fortunate that our Public Health nurse will be coming to Mo-

7 FLU SEASON IS HERE Get the flu shot as early as possible The first and best step to preventing the flu (or influenza), is to get the flu shot every year. The flu spreads quickly and easily from an infected person to others and anyone can get it. Getting the flu shot can protect you, your family and those around you. Students may be at higher risk of getting the flu as they come together in close public spaces including the classroom, gymnasium, lunch room and library. The flu shot is especially important for students who have a chronic condition (e.g. asthma, diabetes) or those who live with or have close contact with a pregnant woman, kids less than five years old, or a resident of a nursing home or other chronic care facility since these groups are at higher risk of getting very sick or being hospitalized because of the flu. Flu shots are free and are readily available at: Health care provider s offices for people six months of age and older Participating pharmacies, for people five years of age and older In addition to getting the flu shot annually, here are some other health tips that can help prevent the spread of the flu: Wash your hands well and often with either soap and water or alcohol based hand rub Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze (if you do not have a tissue, cough into your upper sleeve) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth Stay home when you re sick Clean and disinfect surfaces and shared items It s important to get the flu shot as early as possible as it can take nearly two weeks for the influenza vaccine to take full effect.
