Prof. PD Dr. at the Department of Oral Surgery Heinrich Heine University, Dusseldorf, Germany PD Dr. Frank Schwarz graduated from Dental School at the University of Saarland, Homburg, Germany in 1998, and obtained a Postgraduate degree in Oral Surgery in In 2005, he finalised his habilitation. He has been a Research Associate at Ludwig Maximilians University, and is currently Associate Professor at the Heinrich Heine University s Department of Oral Surgery in Germany since PD Dr. Schwarz s main research activities include guided bone regeneration, growth factors, implant surfaces and treatment of Peri-Implant infections. He was awarded the André Schroeder Research Prize in 2007, and is currently an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Course overview How to control Peri-Implant Diseases The treatment of infectious diseases affecting osseointegrated implants in function has become a demanding issue in implant dentistry. While nonsurgical therapy of peri-implantitis was not found to be effective, access flap surgery was associated with a resolution of the inflammatory cell infiltrate and promotion of new bone fill. Basically, surgical therapy of peri-implantisis may be accomplished employing resective and-/ or regenerative approaches and should consider the specific defect component (i.e. intrabony and supracrestal aspects). The course will provide cutting edge knowledge on: Diagnosis (e.g. Cone beam CT) and treatment planning of surgical respective/ regenerative procedures Step by step surgical procedures for different defect configurations (video sessions) Soft tissue management and augmentation (video sessions) Postoperative care

5 Workshop (Hands-on on pig jaws) in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF PERI-IMPLANTITIS A MODULAR CONCEPT! The workshop will provide an evidence-based review of the procedures currently available for the treatment of peri-implantitis lesions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the clinical application of surgical regenerative procedures in the aesthetic zone. Hands-on training will include: Staged soft tissue management (lack of keratinized attached or thin mucosa) Implantoplasty Augmentation procedures (intrabony aspects and contour augmentation) Combination therapy (implantoplasty and augmentation procedures) Lecture in Perth only REGENERATIVE APPROACHES FOR THE TREATMENT OF PERIIMPLANTITIS Since non-surgical treatment approaches failed to promote the re-osseointegration at exposed implant sites, additional surgical interventions may be required in order to minimise the risk of re-infection of the periimplant pocket. This might be achieved either with resective surgery (i.e. implantoplasty) or with bone augmentation procedures. The present lecture will provide an evidence-based review of the currently available procedures for the treatment of periimplantitis lesions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the clinical application of surgical regenerative procedures.
