1 Bergen County Dental Society Volume 17 Issue 7 April 2011 Meeting & Lecture Protecting your Financial Rear End in These Turbulent Times 1 CE Credit Ernest Badway, Esq. Fox Rothschild LLP Your Corporate Retirement Plan - Maximizing its Benefits 1 CE Credit Susan B. Silberman, CRPS April 11, 2011 (see page 4 for details) 6:30 pm Seasons Restaurant Washington Twp., NJ FULL DAY SEMINAR! Aesthetics and Occlusion 7 CE Credits (see page 2 for details) Mark Samani, DMD I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Essex County Dental Society meeting. An interesting aspect of the night was their business meeting, which focused on the involvement of NJDA members in the NJDA Political Action Committee. Fortunately, at our last Bergen County meeting, Jim Schulz was our speaker for the night. As you all are aware, Jim Schulz is the Director of Governmental Affairs for NJDA and is an eloquent and engaging speaker. Having the entire evening dedicated to the issues of the NJDA PAC was certainly a different approach than we are used to having in Bergen County and it is something I think we should continue in the future. I want to thank Jim Schulz for a very informative meeting and a special thank you to our Executive Committee, for making the suggestion of a PAC-centric meeting. How does the membership get more involved with PAC? The involvement that the NJDA needs from its membership is two fold. First is in the form of financial donations directly from NJDA members. We are all privy to the world of politics and the realization that it is an expensive endeavor only substantiates the need for increased private funding to the PAC by NJDA members. The second method of increasing member involvement in PAC is through grass-roots movement. When called to action, the NJDA membership needs to make their voices heard. Phone calls, FAXES, s - whichever method of communication you choose - letting your representatives know your opinion on various issues is an important tool in furthering our cause. In Memoriam ~ Joan Harz The members of the BCDS were saddened to hear of the recent passing of our long-time Secretary, Joan Harz, who was an integral member of our society for over 35 years. Our sincere condolences go out to her family. 2 BCDS Full Day Continuing Education Seminar Computerized Dentistry for Private Practice Implants - Aesthetics and Occlusion ~ 7 CE Credits 8:00 AM ~ 4:00 PM CAD/CAM technology has the advantage of reduced clinical chair-time and reduced laboratory costs. The accuracy of these techniques has improved to the point where they are now comparable to conventional techniques. This presentation will review the current technology which allows the fabrication of an implant abutment without a fixture level impression. In addition this impression does not require the removal of the healing abutment. The fabrication of ceramic full coverage restorations and veneers, with an in-office technique, will also be demonstrated. Occlusion principles will be discussed as they relate to new materials and their application in private practice. Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture the participant will understand the advantages and disadvantages of: 1. Computer generated abutments 2. Ceramic full coverage for teeth and implants. 3. Occlusion principles with all ceramic restorations and implants 4. Implant abutment fabrication without a fixture level impression 5. Complete CAD/CAM Implant Abutments and Restorations Dr. Dean C. April Lecture: Your Corporate Retirement Plan - Maximizing its Benefits Susan B. Silberman, CRPS You take care of others every day, but what are you doing to take care of yourself for the long term? We re living longer and retiring earlier. Or we want to. Now, more than ever, planning your retirement is essential to living the retirement you want. A key element of your personal retirement plan is your corporate retirement plan. You can use your corporate plan to your advantage. Are you aware that you don t have to limit your own contributions out of concern for funding all employees? Do you know if your plan is protected from creditors? Recent legislation has added new options to the retirement plan landscape; are you taking advantage of these new features? Susan Silberman, CRPS if a Financial Advisor and Financial Planning Specialist with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. She is a chartered Retirement Plans Specialist in Paramus office. Susan has adopted a consultative partnership with her clients who include small business owners, professionals, high-net-worth individuals and their families, and mid- to senior-level executives who are in transition. Together they work on developing a comprehensive financial plan that answers such fundamental questions...is my portfolio correctly balanced for my risk tolerance? What level of retirement income do I need to maintain the lifestyle I am accustomed to enjoying? As a Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist with extensive experience in assisting clients with decisions about their Retirement Plans, Corporate Stock Plans and Options, Susan reviews portfolios, addresses their current financial situations and help them plan confidently for their future. She finds it beneficial to work alongside other professionals, such as attorneys and accountants, to ensure that all critical areas of her client s financial life are fully explored.

Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus (Lunch included) Please go to for full details. Bryon E. Roshong, DMD, NJDA Trustee The old adage that there is strength in numbers holds very true today. Membership in Bergen County Dental Society of that number, 167 are non-paying members (due to their status), leaving a total of 557 members. As of March 16, 2011, only 189 of the 557 members have paid their 2011 dues. Should this scenario become the norm for the NJDA, it will lose any legitimacy of representation of our profession. At the last BCDS meeting, you heard Jim Schulz speak about the vital role of NJ Dental PAC, but without your monetary contributions, we are fighting an uphill political battle that could enable legislators to ignore our issues and recommendations. What to do about this is the eternal question. Two areas of prime importance focus on membership recruitment and retention, as well as increased contribution to the profession. By numbers alone, an increase in membership can lead to a larger pool of potential volunteers and NJDA is trying a multi- pronged approach to this problem. One such approach is through the Membership Rewards Program, in which you can receive reduced 2012 dues for each new member you recruit to NJDA. Another approach is for officers to invite non-members to lunch or to a component meeting. If you know of any non-members, make contact with them. Trish DeCotiis at NJDA can be reached to review some interesting talking points to review with your non-member colleagues, as well as to review the resources available to members. Some of the programs that may slip your mind that make NJDA membership rewarding to you are: Partners Program 5 Our profession will not be able to thrive as we know it without increasing our numbers. This year brings an important election in which all of NJ State Assembly and NJ State Senate seats are up for possible change. If we are to keep our friends of dentistry in political office, we will need every present member to be a member of PAC. There is strength in numbers, not only in representation, but in contributions. A call to action has been made and I am spelling out how I interpret it. I ask you to consider getting involved and helping our membership grow.
