8 President s Message Happy Holidays on behalf of the SDCDHS Executive Board. With such a busy month before us, the executive board has decided to forgo the annual December CE in favor of adding an extra Seminar Course in the upcoming year. Please check with your employers and colleagues if the staff is current with their required CA Law/Infection Control units. Come January, we will have past CDHA President, Tricia Osuna RDH, BSDH, FAADH, offering to our dental community the opportunity to acquire these vital courses for licensure. Included in the price is a full American breakfast along with an opportunity drawing and numerous exhibitors to visit with. At the February 2015 General meeting, we will be electing delegates to represent us at the annual House of Delegates that will be held right here in San Diego. It has been a number of years since our leaders have selected San Diego as the HOD meeting site, so we are all excited to receive our guests and show off our beautiful city. For those of you who cannot make time to travel to other destinations, this might be an opportunity to volunteer and learn more about how policy is made at the state level. Our February General Meeting is also Student Night! In addition, we will be looking for a new slate of officers to serve under President Elect Brad Cushman, RDH. After many years of service on the board, we look forward to having him as our leader. Brad will be our first male president leader in San Diego, which I see as an honor in an ever-changing, progressive profession. Finally, I would like to remind our members and non-members, that giving back is one of our duties as health care professionals. This upcoming year we would like to put together bags for the women's shelter and we are in desperate need of donations. Any hotel bathroom soaps, shampoos and other freebies are greatly appreciated. Please bring all donations to our General Meetings and Seminars and we will gladly take them off your hands and distribute them to people in need. Once again we wish you and yours a happy, healthy holiday season. Darcie E. Bell, RDH. BS SDCDHS President Page 8

10 What Makes A Hygienist? How did you decide to become a dental hygienist? Was there a person who took a special interest in you, mentored you and showed you what a wonderful profession dental hygiene can be? Would you like to pay that forward to the next generation? Here s your chance! FACES for the Future, a program of positive youth development located at Hoover High School, could use your help in two areas. FACES students start in their sophomore year, with healthcare-related classes; professional and personal development workshops; etc., as we work to encourage and mentor them toward careers in healthcare. As juniors, they are placed in job-shadowing internships in the community; as seniors, they are placed in rotations in various clinical departments at Rady Children s Hospital. We try to match the students with whatever interests they develop. We have a senior interested in becoming a dental hygienist, and are looking to place her in an internship with a hygienist, or in a mentoring relationship. The problem is that she does not have reliable transportation, so we need something either very near the school (located at 4474 El Cajon Blvd.) or near Rady Children s Hospital. Or, we need someone who can go to the school to meet with her. A special workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 3, will present Careers in Dentistry to high school juniors and seniors. We are planning career panels during the school day, presented in the classroom, and need a dental hygienist to present at 8:30-9:30 a.m.; 12:30-1:30; and 1:30-2:30 p.m. It doesn t need to be the same person all three times, but we need someone for all three panels. Please contact Susan Lovelace at slovelace@rchsd.org, or , ext. 3745, for more information or to volunteer. Page 10
