4 2017 TOPICS EVENT SPONSOR Increasing expectations on Dental Assistants to act professionally and ethically Office of the Health Ombudsman complaints process protecting the health and safety of the public. This lecture will cover the National Code of Conduct for Health Care Workers and its impact on Dental Assistants highlighting infection control practices. Infection Control Update There has been an increased focus on infection prevention in dental care after well publicised infection control breaches resulting in cancellation, suspension and/ or conditions imposed on the registration of several dentists. In some cases the dentists blamed the issue on inexperienced staff or the inability to keep up to date. It is important to note that approach to reprocessing of reusable medical devices, including dental instruments has undergone a revolution over the past decade with increased research occurring on the safety and effectiveness of commonly used cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation practices. This presentation highlights the essential contribution correct reprocessing has on patient safety and infection risks due to the increasingly invasive procedures being undertaken in dental practice. Periodontal Tissue Engineering Using 3D-Printing A critical requirement for periodontal regeneration is the ability to promote the formation of functional periodontal attachment between regenerated alveolar bone and newly formed cementum on the root surface. This lecture will address the current status of periodontal regeneration clinical procedures, as well as advanced tissue engineering approaches capable of recapitulating the complex wound healing events that will lead to predictable periodontal regeneration. 4 SATURDAY 5 AUGUST 2017
5 2017 TOPICS Substance Use Disorders and Oral Health Globally it is estimated that 246 million or one in 20 people aged between used illicit substances in 2013 alone. With substance use becoming a common challenge, it is important for the dental practice to be aware of the surrounding clinical, ethical and legal issues. This lecture aims to explore some of these aspects in relation to substance abuse. Laser treatment of oral restrictions one step in comprehensive oral health management The training & practice of oral health professionals has included very limited exploration of soft tissue dysfunction (including tongue ties or oral restrictions ) and their far-reaching effect. Likewise, the application of lasers in clinical practice is less well understood than they ought to be. However, with the evolution of clinical practice, we better understand both the critical importance of preventative action and the connections between mouth and body function. This session explores some features of oral restrictions including the importance of early identification and management to prevent dysfunctional habit patterns that have effects across the life-span. Dento-facial Aesthetics: Facial Injectables in the Dental practice Incorporating Dento-facial aesthetics with facial injectables into the dental practice has gained much recognition over the past few years. Many dentists and their teams are advancing the profession into the future by recognising the advanced skill set we have at our disposal. With excellent training now available to Dentists, DAs, Hygientists and OHTs and Practice Managers, the entire team can confidently offer refreshing full-face injectables to complement all treatment for the dentition. 5
