2 Overview Your Dexcom G5 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System is made up of: Transmitter (Sensor under skin) Receiver Display Device What are they? Display devices. You can use your receiver or the receiver and an app on your smart device*. What do I do with them? Review your readings. Set and receive Alarm/Alerts. Keep within 20 feet of transmitter. Sensor What is it? Sensor measures glucose levels below skin. What do I do with it? Wear sensor for seven days. Transmitter What is it? Sends glucose information to receiver What do I do with it? Attach to sensor. Reuse for 3 months. Before you begin and anytime you have questions, review the Getting Started Guide and tutorial in your receiver box. All images are representational. To get the full user guide: Download or view: dexcom.com/guides Online request form to receive a free printed copy: dexcom.com/guides Request a free copy from Technical Support by phone: Dexcom G5 readings and meter values may not be the same and that s ok. The Dexcom G5 and a meter measure glucose from two different types of body fluids: interstitial fluid and blood. Readings can be different and still be considered accurate. BRIEF SAFETY STATEMENT: The Dexcom G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System ( G5 ) is a glucose monitoring system indicated for the management of diabetes in persons age 2 years and older. The G5 is designed to replace fingerstick blood glucose testing for diabetes treatment decisions. The G5 also aids in the detection of episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. The G5 is intended for single patient use and requires a prescription. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Do not rely on the G5 CGM data if you have recently taken acetaminophen. Remove the G5 (sensor, transmitter, and receiver) before Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) scan, or high-frequency electrical heat (diathermy) treatment. The G5 is MR Unsafe. Do not bring any portion of the G5 into the MRI environment. WARNING : CGM-based diabetes treatment decisions are only approved with the G5, not previous generations of Dexcom CGM systems. Calibrate at least once every 12 hours using a fingerstick. If your G5 does not display a sensor glucose reading and an arrow, or if you are getting inaccurate or inconsistent readings, take a fingerstick. If your glucose readings and alerts do not match your symptoms or expectations, take a fingerstick to confirm. Failure to do so may lead to hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. The G5 is not approved for use in pregnant women, persons on dialysis or critically ill persons. If a sensor breaks and no portion of it is visible above the skin, do not attempt to remove it. Seek professional medical help if you have infection or inflammation on or near the sensor insertion point. Report broken sensors to Dexcom Technical Support. Sensor placement is not approved for sites other than under the skin of the belly (ages 2 years and older) or upper buttocks (ages 2-17 years). To share data, you need an internet connection and a separate compatible smart device running the Dexcom Follow App. Contact Dexcom Toll Free at or for detailed indications for use and safety information. 3 Step 1: Set Up Receiver Power Button Turn receiver on. Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds. After 15 seconds, the loading screen displays. Introduction screen displays. Tap OK. The first time you start your receiver, the set up walks you through entering your date/time, transmitter serial number (SN), and setting up your low and high alerts Enter date and time. Date: Year / Month / Day Time: Hour / Minute / AM or PM Enter transmitter SN. Transmitter SN found on: SN 4002B9 SN 4002B9 transmitter back transmitter box Set Low Alert between mg/dl. Receiver alerts you when you are below this setting. Set High Alert between mg/dl. Receiver alerts you when you are above this setting.
4 Step 2: Insert Sensor and Attach Transmitter Before you begin, wash and dry your hands. Choose an insertion site on the belly: At least 3 inches from your insulin pump infusion set or injection site Out of the way of your waistband Avoid areas with scarring, tattoos, or irritation Clean site with alcohol. Peel off both backings. Place horizontally. Pull safety lock out Collar Place two fingers ABOVE the collar and push plunger down. Move fingers below collar and pull back. Squeeze ribbed tabs on the sides of the sensor. While squeezing tabs, rock the applicator forward and out Clean transmitter with alcohol. Let dry. Tuck narrow end into front of pod. Hold transmitter. It stops blinking when it s found. Tap START SENSOR. No readings during 2-hour warmup. Keep receiver within 20 feet during 2-hour sensor warmup. Step 4: Calibrate After the 2-hour warmup, you must enter two separate blood glucose meter (meter) values before readings begin Your receiver alerts you when you need to enter your two meter values. Wash hands with soap and water, never gel cleaners. Dry hands. Test using your meter. Use fingertips only. Enter the value from your meter. Tap DONE. Repeat steps to enter the final meter value. Entering two separate meter values ensures accuracy. Calibrate Every 12 Hours The meter icon shows a red badge when a calibration is needed. See your user guide for more details. WARNING: Calibrate the Dexcom G5 at least once every 12 hours. The Dexcom G5 needs to be calibrated in order to provide accurate readings.
6 Trend Screen and Trend Arrow Your trend screen shows your sensor glucose reading, trend graph, and trend arrow. Your trend arrow shows the direction you are headed and how fast you will be there. Enter Meter Value Main Menu Glucose Reading High Glucose Alert Level Low Glucose Alert Level Events Trend Arrow Glucose Ranges Current Glucose Reading Trend Graph Set up the Dexcom G5 Mobile app (Optional) Install the Dexcom G5 Mobile app* from the App Store or Google Play Store. *For a list of compatible devices, visit dexcom.com/compatibility Dexcom Share Create account or log in using your Dexcom account.
