4 2 MESSAGE PROF. A. SAMAD SHERA Patron Its gives me great pleasure to write this message for the International Conference. Presently over 300 million people are affected by diabetes and these numbers are predicted to rise to 450 million by the year % of them live in lowand middleincome countries. Diabetes can therefore be rightly called the Disease of the Developing Countries. The countries with large population in the Asian Continent are also low resource countries. Therefore, despite the higher prevalence of diabetes and its complications, the essential health care requirements and facilities for diabetes care are often inadequate. I am convinced that the policy makers and health care providers in the developing countries have to get their priorities right and need to shift their focus to Primary Prevention of Diabetes. The present health care setup in our country, like most Asian countries, is structured to deal with acute and episodic illnesses and is not designed to provide the optimal array of services necessary to manage a complex, multi system chronic illness like diabetes. If we are serious in preventing the prevailing epidemic of diabetes, we have to mobilise our available resources to implement Primary Prevention Strategies for Type 2 Diabetes. Leading Physicians and Diabetologists from Pakistan and abroad will present their research papers during the Conference. The academic exchange of experiences with the experts will provide impetus to increase the research efforts at all levelsclinical, laboratory and operational. Such deliberations will pave the way for improving and strengthening the diabetes health care. The proceedings of the Conference will provide a deep insight into the academic content of the Conference. With Prof. Masood Hameed Khan as Chairman of the Organasing Committee and Prof. Zaman Shaikh as the Secretary General, I am assured of the success of the Conference. I would like to offer my special thanks to Sir Micheal Hirst, President- Elect, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and his team for participating as honoured guests in this Conference. I would also like to offer my thanks to Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, for the honour he has done me by asking me to be the Patron of the Conference. MASOOD HAMEED KHAN Chairman Vice Chancellor Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi It is a matter of great privilege for me to welcome our valued participants to the International Conference to be held in Karachi from 10th to 12th December, As remarkable technological breakthroughs impact the lives of the common man at an ever-increasing pace, the field of medicine has had its share of successes. In fact, the achievements in the realm of medicine have had the greatest positive influence on mankind as it has benefited from more effective preventive measures, superior diagnostic techniques, better cures and improved disease management. Diabetes, being the most widespread metabolic disorder, has remained the focus of innumerable researches, investigations and studies across the world. The International Conference will not only offer a forum for sharing and disseminating this knowledge, it will also encourage the exploration and cultivation of ideas through intellectual debates and deleberation. The presence of leading scholars in the field of diabetes at this conference, including fifteen foreign dignitaries, promises to make the event a significant milestone in Pakistan s campaign for an effective control and management of the disease. I am very confident that the conference will live up to our expectations and would achieve the desired goal of increasing awareness of diabetes and its related issues. I am greatly indebted to Professor A Samad Shera, a renowned international figure in the field of diabetes and the Patron of this Conference for extending extraordinary support, help and guidance. I admire the effort, hard work and devotion of Secretary General of organizing committee Professor. M. Zaman Shaikh and his team to make this conference a memorable event.
