9 43rd Annual Educational Program FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9th 9:30 am 10:30 am FR-1-A Interesting Cases Diagnosed by New OCT Techniques Eric Kegley, CRA, COA - Moderator As OCT has evolved, new OCT imaging techniques have become available. We are able to diagnose pathology and determine treatment based on new OCT techniques such as: enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI OCT), en face OCT, peripheral OCT, and handheld OCT. This course will feature several experienced OCT imagers presenting interesting cases that have been diagnosed by new OCT techniques. Through case presentations, understanding of the particular disease as well as the appropriate approach to OCT imaging will be gained. At the end of this course, attendees should be able to determine the best OCT technique to document a variety of diseases. FR-1-B Introduction to Fundus Autofluorescence Imaging Dennis Orlock, FOPS; Denice Cunningham, CRA, FOPS Fundus Autofluorescent (FAF) imaging has been a tool in ophthalmic imaging for decades which only occasionally provided useful information. With the advent of scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLOs) and high-resolution digital fundus cameras sensitive in the FAF wavelength, this technique has evolved from a novelty application to a broad based application and has been helpful in studying retinal disease progression, especially macular degeneration. This course will review the basics of FAF and also demonstrate the technique needed to take diagnostic FAF images on the SLO and FAF modified fundus camera. At the end of this course, the student should be able to distinguish the four known classes of ophthalmic fluorescence, explain what information is gained by auto-fluorescent imaging, and describe basic imaging principles. FR-1-C Camelot Ophthalmic Videography Randall Verdick, FOPS & James Gilman, CRA, FOPS This course will discuss ophthalmic video production and postproduction, including integrating and utilizing video equipment with ophthalmic equipment such as slit lamps and surgical microscopes. Other topics include external clinical and surgical production, video indirect ophthalmoscopy. Techniques such as transillumination of the iris, sclera, and eyelid will be shown. Postproduction techniques (editing) will also be discussed. At the conclusion of this course the students will have a basic understanding of the video production process from acquisition to postproduction work. They will be able to describe the equipment, software and editing process, from raw video to the postproduction phase. They will also identify video applications and integrate them into the ophthalmologic setting. FR-1-D How Cameras Work Richard Hackel, CRA, FOPS Even with the automatic conveniences of modern digital cameras a good photographer still needs to understand and know how a typical camera works and what is going on inside that little box. F-stops, shutter speeds, and image sensors all need to be understood in order to juggle these variables into a better photograph. Tonal values, color accuracy, and blurs all have different ways of contributing and detracting from a good photograph. This lecture will discuss and define the controls and mechanisms of a typical camera and how they work together to make a photograph. Controlling these variables appropriately can make what would be a mediocre photograph become an outstanding one. The controls and mechanisms of these cameras will also be compared to the modern fundus camera. At the end of this course, the student will learn how to identify a number of camera imaging characteristics, how these qualities can be controlled to make better photographs and how they relate to fundus photography. 10:45 am 11:45 am FR-2-A Art in Ophthalmic Photography James Gilman, CRA, FOPS As scientific imagers we are called upon to accurately record a patient's condition. As we progress at using our tools, we select appropriate filters, cameras, and digital systems to aid in diagnosis and consequent treatment. In the process, we also discover the beauty of what we see and apply artistic aesthetics to the creation of those images. This lecture will explore ways to apply an artistic approach to making images using examples of successful and unsuccessful ways to do so. Audience participation and discussion will be greatly encouraged. After completion of the course the student will be able to describe methods to apply an artistic approach to making ophthalmic images. FR-2-B Advanced Fundus Autofluorescence Imaging Denise Cunningham, CRA, FOPS Initially utilized as an adjunct to retinal photography and ocular angiography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF) has become an essential imaging modality in its own right. This advanced presentation will compare and contrast 9

10 the two commercially available instruments used in FAF image capture, with an emphasis on the complementary attributes of the resultant images. Novel FAF imaging techniques, such as retinal pre-bleaching, multispectral imaging, and macular pigment mapping, will be introduced along with methods for obtaining standardized reproducible visual data. At the conclusion of this lecture, the student will be able to elaborate on the characteristics of images obtained from different instruments, describe several advanced imaging techniques and explain their application. FR-2-C Camelot A Systematic Approach to Better Color in Digital Fundus Photography Dennis W. Thayer; Tony Pugliese In this course, students will gain a better appreciation of what elements affect color imaging (monitor, capture device, capture settings, etc.) and how they interact in a typical fundus camera environment. Suggestions will be made on basic set-up of the system for color photos and possible adjustments to improve fundus photos. The use of external tools for image review, such as Adobe PhotoShop, will be discussed as well. By the end of this course, the student should be able to list three elements that affect color imaging and have a better understanding of how to make adjustments to improve the color in fundus photos. CEC OPS 1; JCAHPO 0 $25.00 FR-2-D SD-OCT Unleashed! An Introduction to Hand-held OCT Imaging Cynthia VandenHoven, CRA; Ditte Hess, CRA, FOPS The availability of a portable hand-held SD-OCT enables the assessment of vitreoretinal and corneal changes in the supine pediatric subject and those not able to reach the chin rest of traditional OCT systems. Technical overview will include: Bioptigen s InVivoVue software and equipment settings, scanning protocols and imaging artifacts, and commonly used problem solving techniques with hand-held OCT scanning. Patient management techniques related to imaging supine awake patients and those under sedation or under anesthesia will also be discussed. At the end of this lecture and workshop, students should be able to describe the uses for a handheld OCT, have a hands-on basic understanding of the instrument and elaborate on how to scan a supine patient. 12:00 pm 1:00 pm FR-3-A Adobe Lightroom Import, Organize, & Export Basic Level Tamera Schoenholz, CRA, OCT-C This course will familiarize participants with the basic functionality of Adobe Lightroom and its use in the field of ophthalmic imaging. Attention will be given to three 10 main areas in the software: importing, organization, and exporting of image files. Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to import image files, organize their images into collections, and perform various exporting functions in the software. OPS CEC 1; JCAHPO 0 $25.00 FR-3-B 3D OCT: The Next Level Carl Glittenberg, MD This advanced course will compare three dimensional ultra high resolution optical coherence tomography (UHR-3D- OCT) to spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) and time domain OCT (TD-OCT). Clinical and surgical benefits from raytraced, three-dimensional reconstruction of Cirrus SD-OCT data will also be discussed. At the end of this course, students should have a better understanding of how UHR- 3D-OCT, SD-OCT and TD-OCT compare and understand how ray-traced three-dimensional reconstruction of OCT data can help in the clinical and surgical settings. FR-3-C Camelot Hi-Tech Spanish for Ophthalmic Photographers Marcela Hickey, CRA, FOPS This course is for the English-speaking ophthalmic photographer who occasionally has non-english speaking patients. Translation technology will be introduced highlighting the latest technology to assist the technician. Key phrases will be taught in Spanish to enable the photographer to manage the patient at the fundus camera or slit lamp and help the patient understand the process of having an eye photographed, thereby increasing patient cooperation. At the end of this course, the student should be able to communicate common phrases as well as the ability to use available translation technology that will help with photographic procedures. FR-3-D Retinal Surgical Videos Calvin Mein, MD Photographers and technicians are often asked to image patients who are about to undergo retinal surgery or who are recovering from one. Understanding the intervention rounds out the ophthalmic photographer s or technician s understanding of the pathology and its management. This course will present videos of retinal surgery. Cases include vitrectomy for retinal detachment repair, vitrectomy and McCannel sutures for repair of posteriorly dislocated IOL s and other interesting surgical cases. The student will observe through video demonstrations the complex microsurgical manipulations used in posterior eye surgery. At the end of this course, students will be able to list several retinal surgical procedures and describe in general terms how they are performed. CEC OPS 1 ; JCAHPO-A 1 $25.00

11 1:15 pm 2:15 pm FR-4-A Adobe Lightroom Development Module Basic Level Tamera Schoenholz, CRA, OCT-C This course will familiarize participants with the basics of how to use Adobe Lightroom s Development Module. Set by set, various development options and functions will be shown. Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do any of the basic development options, as well as have an understanding of the more advanced functions in the development module. OPS CEC 1 ; JCAHPO 0 $25.00 FR-4-B Image Management A Introduction to the Standards and Practices Joseph Warnicki, FOPS As the digital ophthalmic field continues to expand, several standards such as DICOM, HL-7, and CCOW are being used to facilitate the sharing of information among imaging and EMR systems. A panel of photographers and developers will discuss these systems and how they facilitate clinical workflow. Also discussed will be solutions for older (legacy) systems that predate these standards. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to elaborate on basic current EMR and imaging standards as well as discuss image integration considerations. FR-4-C Camelot Retinal Anatomy and Physiology William James Gealy, MD The basic anatomy of the ocular fundus will be reviewed from a clinical perspective. Though the program is small, each year the number of students entering the field of ophthalmic photography has grown exponentially. The origins of the program began in filmbased fundus photography and fluorescein angiography with two fundus cameras. The curriculum has grown and changed with the industry to include digital imaging, OCT and SLO technologies, while maintaining the foundations of anatomy, physiology, descriptive interpretation and disease identification so central to the definition of a highly qualified ophthalmic imager. This course will include an overview of the history and evolution of the program at RIT, as well as a panel discussion on future trends from RIT alumni, faculty and administration. At the conclusion of this presentation the students will be able to discuss the evolution of Ophthalmic Photography as it is reflected in the curriculum of a formal secondary educational program. Gass Memorial Lecture SA-6-B AZOOR - J. Donald Gass Mysterious and Fascinating Disease John Heckenlively, MD J. Donald Gass was a giant in the field of retina. It is easy to understand why he was so widely respected when reviewing his numerous definitive papers dating from 1960: virtually every important retinal disease was studied and reported first by him, many in single author articles. One disease in particular seemed to fascinate Dr. Gass for the last 15 years of his life, namely Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy (AZOOR). AZOOR patients typically report a sudden onset of flashes and scotomata in their vision. The severity of the condition may vary with unilateral cases (43%) initially, but bilateral involvement is common. The cause of AZOOR has been controversial, and some AZOOR cases have appeared as inflammatory white dot diseases. Based on Dr. Gass criteria, we have studied 25 cases of AZOOR in our inflammatory retinopathy patients and found that all cases have circulating anti-retinal antibodies, with active cases having more immunoreactive bands. Photographic examples, fluorescein angiography, autofluoresence, and visual field studies will be presented on AZOOR patients. In addition to relaying some of Dr. Donald Gass contributions to the field of ophthalmology and by extension, the field of ophthalmic imaging, this presentation will cover some of the factors considered in the differential diagnosis of AZOOR, and describe the testing utilized to arrive at a diagnosis of this mystifying and sight threatening disease which held the attention of this great ophthalmologist. Attendees will be able to outline some of Dr. Donald Gass contributions to the field of ophthalmology and by extension, the field of ophthalmic imaging. The students will be able to describe in general terms some of the factors considered in the differential diagnosis of AZOOR, and describe the testing utilized to arrive at a diagnosis. Students will also be able to describe various imaging modalities used in investigating the pathophysiology of this disease as well as discuss findings related to this condition as seen on various ophthalmic tests. CEC OPS 1; JCAHPO-A 1 *This event is included in the general registration fee. 15
