This Girl Can Birmingham. The following document reports on the successes and findings of the This Girl Can project Birmingham; delivered through Birmingham City Council Wellbeing Service in partnership with Sports Birmingham. The reports findings included activities placed throughout the city pre, post and during International women s day on 8 th March Appendix table:tgc01 shows the details of events that took part in the city and the level of users at each session. The findings from the report shows that at least 4,937 people took part in the campaign with most activities taking place in March, some in April and 21% of events/ sessions happening on the 8 th March International Women s Days. From the data collected the following profiles were broken down; Gender (Chart 1.a): As the chart shows 93% of users were of female gender and 7% were Male; in cross-reference with chart 1.b, the results actually show 73% of the male users were aged 17 or below indicating that most of the male users may have come along to family based events.
Age Groups (Chart 1.b): - As shown below the biggest users group reached in the campaign was 5 to 17 years old, this mirrors both genders with an overall 72% of users being 17 or under in this campaign. - The largest age profiles reached was 12 (7.5%), 12 (5.4%) and 13 (4.1%); - This echoes for women; - For men the largest age group was 3 (9.6%), 10 (9.3) and 4 (7%). IMD (Chart 1.c): The index of multiple deprivation, for these users shows that: - 53% of users came from the most deprived 0% to 20% areas of the city. The city s population census (appendix tgc02) shows the project reached 3% more user from the most deprived 0% to 10% areas; - If we exclude the unclassified/ unknown users, the project actually reached an average of 47% user from to 0% to 10% IMD group and 59% of users from the 0% to 20% IMD group; - Our biggest age profile from the 0% to 10% IMD group was 11/12 (334 users); - 62% of BME users were from the 0% to 10% IMD, as were 53% of disable users.
Ethnicity (Chart 1.d): The reach in minority groups was highly successful in the campaign and the following reached results were concluded from our user profile and against appendix tgc03 city level census data: - Asian 37% (10% higher than city average) - Black 17% (8% higher than city average) - Mixed 7% (3% higher than city average) - White 33% (25% lower than city average) - Other 1% (1% lower than city average) - (Unknown 5%) Overall the campaign reached 20% more ethnic minority groups than the city average. 58% of disabled users came from a BME group 35% from the white demographic (excluding unknowns) and 83% of user from the 0% to 10% IMD areas were from a BME/ minority group compared to 17% from the white demographics (excluding out of city and unknown/ unclassified).
The largest ethnic profile reached was Asian: Pakistani at 13% followed by Black British at 7%. Disability (Chart 1.e): As the chart shows 5% of users in the campaign class themselves with having a disability, this equates to 244 users of which 228 were women. Appendix tgc04 shows the activity/ events these particular users went to and how many users were at each event. Of the 244 user identifying themselves with a disability 40% were from the 0% to 20% most deprived areas if the city.
District (Chart 1.f): As the chart shows users from all ten districts took part in the campaign, Hall Green (15.54%) and Ladywood (13.69%) with the biggest reach. All 40 wards within the districts also had users take part in the campaign with Sparkbrook (8%), Bordesley Green (7%) and Quinton (6%) bringing in the most users. The data shows (appendix table: tgc05) the very north and south wards in the city had less users compared to inner city wards on average. Table 2.a shows (for reference) the proportion of users coming from the different segmentation types in the city, showing what household type could be coming from these wards and districts. Table 2.a Segementation Total Total % B Prestige Positions % C City Prosperity % Concluded: Out of Area % D Domestic Success % E Suburban Stability % F Senior Security % H Aspiring Homemakers % I Urban Cohesion % J Rental Hubs % K Modest Traditions % L Transient Renters % M Family Basics % N Vintage Value % O Municipal Challenge % U Unclassified % Unclassified/ Unknown % Grand Total %
How people were reached (Chart 1.g): After grouping the various answers on how users heard about the event, Chart 1.g shows the methods of reaching our users of these events. The chart shows local engagement and advertisement were the most popular ways of users finding out about the events with a clear indication that some forms of word of mouth are a popular way of finding out about these events for this campaign. Cross referencing with IMD areas the data shows the user closer to 0% to 10% strongly were reached through local/ community places (38%) and even though this is the main reasons for the others IMD groups, the numbers significantly drops the higher we went in IMD areas percentage and next set of reach methods varied quite a lot in the groups i.e. 30%plus IMD users having 15% local engagement communication method and then seem to use social media more than the other two groups.
Feedback: We recently surveyed 17 small grants budget projects that the following findings were found: - 59% of these projects applied for a grant as they wanted to do / be a part of something for women, comments included: Working in the community, I saw the benefits of bringing parents and women together for activity and The general ethos and confidence of the message TGC expressed. Positive and optimistic to be part of it all. - 64% of these projects have or are planning on carrying on with these events/sessions, 50% of the groups who said no was due to not having funding, comments included: Great turnout on the day has led to continued activity. The girls leading the event on the day have taken this activity as a business enterprise opportunity. It has built people's self-esteem and confidence and was very positive. And At the moment, the organisation is approaching local business and applying for any funding to kick start this whole event again. - 94% of these projects would apply for funding again and encourage others to do so. Comments include: Yes 100%. The application itself was straightforward and easy. Amy Bird was very helpful and the process was simple. and Yes. Of course. I want to work alongside the TGC to promote Bhangra Burnoff. And Yes, certainly. There is a scope for longer lasting programmes. This will build and set a cycle for others to continue being active and acquire new skills every day.
